Krysta Rodriguez to Star in the CBS Comedy Pilot “Sober Companion”

Krysta Rodriguez has found a new companion

The 37-year-old Latina actress and singer has been tapped as a lead opposite Lauren Lapkus in CBS’ comedy pilot Sober Companion.

Krysta Rodriguez,

The project hails from Jane the Virgin creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman and CBS Studios, where Urman is under an overall deal.

Written by Gracie Glassmeyer and David Rosenthal from a story they co-wrote with Urman, Sober Companion revolves around Eliza (Rodriguez), a hot-mess alcoholic who owns a bookstore/bar with her uncle in New Orleans and who is forced to get her life together when the court appoints her an exhaustingly upbeat sober companion, Shelley (Lapkus), with whom she has to live 24/7.

The comedy was originally set up at Fox during the 2013-2014 cycle where it went to a single-camera pilot with Justin Long in the title role and Nick Frost as the co-lead. The project, which was written by Urman and Rosenthal, didn’t make it past the pilot stage and has now been retooled through a female lens.

Rodriguez’s Eliza is described as being fun-loving and quick-witted. After one too many run-ins with the law, she is assigned a court-appointed Sober Companion, Shelley, who will force her to confront her demons, get her act together, and stay sober… all while driving her completely nuts.

Lapkus’ Shelley is a joyful, high-spirited oddball. Her methods are a bit unconventional, and her relentless enthusiasm isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but she’s the best at what she does.

CBS Studios produces in association with Sutton Street.

Rodriguez co-starred in Ryan Murphy’s Halston, in which she played Liza Minnelli.

Her other television credits include a starring role in NBC’s Trial & Error, as well as Younger, Lisey’s Story and Gossip Girl.

Rodriguez also starred in the Netflix post-apocalyptic comedy Daybreakand is known for her role as Ana Vargas on NBC’s Smash.

She was last seen on Broadway in Spring Awakeningand before that, she headlined the original Broadway cast of First Date.

Mariah Carey to Appear Alongside DJ Khaled on Latto’s “Big Energy” Remix

Mariah Carey has a Latto going on…

The 52-year-old half-Venezuelan American Grammy-winning singer is joining voices with DJ Khaled for the upcoming remix of Latto’s breakout hit single “Big Energy.”

Mariah Carey & Latto

The announcement comes following a not-so-subtle Twitter exchange between Latto and Carey, in which the duo hinted at a collaboration through clever emojis.

The collaboration between Latto and Mariah Carey is a no brainer, as “Big Energy” samples Tom Tom Club’s 1981 single, “Genius Of Love,” which most fans will recognize from Carey’s No. 1 single “Fantasy.”

The song, released via StreamCut/RCA Records in September, hit No. 14 on the latest Billboard Hot 100, marking the 23-year-old Atlanta native’s first top 40 hit.

The “Big Energy” remix also comes following the release of her album 777 on March 25, which features star-studded guest appearances from Lil WayneChildish Gambino, 21 Savage, Lil Durk, Nardo Wick, and Kodak Black.

“I basically took this masculine, trendy ‘big d–k energy’ quote from Twitter and made it a thing where all genders can have ‘big energy’ and take it deeper than just [something] sexual,” Latto previously told Billboard of her song. “I wanted it to be empowering. It’s an aura that you carry and a confidence. It’s just an overall vibe and when you walk in the room, you have ‘big energy’ and no one can tell you otherwise. It’s an uplifting thing and turning a funny quote into something positive.

“My main thing that I like to push on my fans — or even if you’re not a fan and just tuned into my career — you can like the music or not like the music, but I want you to appreciate my come up, my hustle, my grind, my dedication to what I do,” she continued. “The proof is in the pudding. If you put your mind and hard work and prayer into what you do, it will happen. I’ve been doing this since I was eight years old, and I’m watching my dreams unfold. If eight-year-old Latto saw me being on Billboard — that’s huge to me. I would never take that for granted because these are things that I worked for to accomplish. The biggest thing I want them to take from me is if they stay down, the come up is near.”

Jorge Soler Agrees to Thee-Year, $36 Million Contract with Miami Marlins

Jorge Soler is headed to the Sunshine State

The 30-year-old Cuban professional baseball outfielder and the Miami Marlins have agreed on a three-year, $36 million contract, according to ESPN.

Jorge SolerSoler’s deal includes opt-outs after the first two seasons, sources said. If he opts out, Soler would hit free agency again at age 31 next winter.

A bit player during the Chicago Cubs‘ drought-smashing victory over Cleveland five years ago, Soler was voted MVP of the Atlanta Braves‘ six-game World Series win over the Houston Astros. Soler hit .300 with three home runs and six RBIs.

Soler’s three World Series home runs matched the most for the Braves, equaling Hank Aaron in 1957, Lonnie Smith in 1991 and Ryan Klesko in 1995.

Marlins general manager Kim Ng said as Miami opened camp that the team had two needs: an outfielder — particularly a center fielder, which Soler hasn’t been, as he has primarily played right — and offense.

Soler does fit that bill. He has 121 home runs and 343 RBIs in 661 career games with the Kansas City Royals, the Chicago Cubs and the Braves. He led the American League with 48 homers in 2019, and hit 27 home runs in 149 games with the Royals and Braves last season.

Soler defected from Cuba in 2011, established residency in Haiti and made his big league debut in 2014.

MLB Network was first to report news of Soler’s agreement with Miami.
