Julio Reyes Copello Signs Multiyear Worldwide Deal with Sony Music Publishing

Julio Reyes Copello has a new worldwide deal…

The 53-year-old Colombian producer, songwriter and record engineer has inked a multiyear worldwide deal with Sony Music Publishing.

“I have known and admired Julio for many years,” adds Mejia. “He is widely respected as a musician’s musician, with a deft touch at the piano and a sensitivity as a producer and songwriter, that makes all manner of artists and writers feel right at home whenever they work with him. It is a dream come true, therefore, to finally be able to work directly with Julio, as well as the artists and songwriters he’s developing. I can’t wait for what comes next.”

Reyes is currently working on upcoming releases with Spanish pop star Pablo Alborán, Marc AnthonyAlejandro Sanz, among many others.

The four-time Grammy and seven-time Latin Grammy winner is widely considered one of Latin pop’s most important songwriters, producers and musicians.

Since launching his career in 2001, the Cúcuta alchemist has also penned hits for the likes of superstars Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Thalía, Chayanne, Laura Pausini, Kany García and more.

In total, he has earned 48 Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations; he also has more than 10 ASCAP awards under his belt.

Aside from his songwriting career, Reyes founded Art House Records, a talent incubator where he continues to discover and develop emerging artists, which includes Joaquina, Riza, Ela Taubert and more.

Additionally, he partnered with Abbey Road Institute — the first U.S. music production school, and an extension of the music production education program held at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.

Together, both parties established the Art House Academy & Abbey Road Institute Miami, where they specialize in music performance, music production and sound engineering to develop and educate “the next generation of singer/songwriters, music producers and sound engineers.”

The Mexican American film composer, conductor, songwriter, arranger, record producer, and percussionist’s Oscar-nominated score for the acclaimed Disney/Pixar film Encanto has claimed the ASCAP Composers’ Choice Awards’ film score of the year honors at the 2022 ASCAP Screen Music Awards.

The Chilean-born Canadian film and television score composer, arranger, producer and multi-instrumentalist’s work for HBO Max’s series The White Lotus took home two Composers’ Choice awards for television score of the year and television theme of the year.

Honorees for the top rated television series category, which honor composers and songwriters for their themes and underscore from the highest rated series during calendar year 2021, include Josefina Severino and Carmenza Gomez for Café Con Aroma De Mujer, and Gil Novelo, Jorge Tena Martínez Vara, Jorge Jurado and John Sereda for the Mexican telenovela La Desalmada.

Winners for the Composers’ Choice Awards are voted upon by the ASCAP composer and songwriter community.

The awards were held virtually once again and started at noon E.T. on Monday, May 2.

Germaine Franco to Take Part in ASCAP Experience’s ““Worldly Women in Music” Panel Discussion

The Latina award-winning film composer, who was the first woman to score a Disney animated feature film with Encanto, will be among the panelists for “Worldly Women in Music,” a special discussion on March 8 as ASCAP Experience kicks off its 2022 program.

Germaine FrancoFranco will be among three of the industry’s leading composers and songwriters, part of the PRO’s celebration of Women’s History Month.

She’ll appear alongside Cuban-born Pulitzer Prize winning composer Tania León; and 2016 ASCAP London Songwriter of the Year Amy Wadge.

The celebrated panelists will explore what it takes to make music that crosses borders and cultural boundaries, with Billboard Executive Editor, West Coast and Nashville, Melinda Newman serving as moderator.

The session coincides with International Women’s Day, and kicks of ASCAP’s monthly virtual sessions, which are created to “inspire, educate and connect aspiring songwriters and composers everywhere.”

“We are so excited to launch ASCAP Experience with three phenomenal composers as part of our ‘Women Create Music’ campaign,” comments ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews. “We believe that celebrating the achievements of our members through our “Women Create Music” campaign can help create change and ultimately, more opportunity for women in the music industry.”

Details of more ASCAP Experience sessions will be announced shortly, including sessions covering NFTs, exclusive conversations with chart-topping music creators, and more.

Due to the health crisis, ASCAP’s flagship event flipped for the first time to a virtual event in 2020, and again in 2021. Last year, ASCAP Experience’s virtual panels reached over 41,000 views across real-time and on-demand streaming. Those figures equate to a 39% increase in attendance and 53% increase in RSVPs vs. the previous year, reps say.

Franco received a Golden Globes nomination for Best Original Score, an SCL Award nomination for Outstanding Original Score, an Annie Awards nomination for Best Music in a Feature, and an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for her work on Encanto.

She is the first Latina to join the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score.

Leon is an acclaimed composer of both large scale and chamber works. She is also renowned as a conductor, educator, and advisor to arts organizations. She won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Music for Stride.

Swizz Beatz to Receive ASCAP Voice of the Culture Award

The 42-year-old half Puerto Rican recording artist, music producer and entrepreneur will receive the ASCAP Voice of the Culture award alongside Timbaland and D-Nice to kick off the 2021 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards on June 22.

Following the presentation, the music creators will take part in a 2021 ASCAP Experience conversation, “Voices of the Culture: How Swizz Beatz, Timbaland & D-Nice United the World Through Music,” at 12:00 pm ET/ 9:00 am PT.

The virtual conversation will explore how Timbaland and Swizz Beatz’s virtual music battle series Verzuz and D-Nice’s Club Quarantine became tools for uplift within the Black music community and touchstones of empowerment during the pandemic.

In addition to launching these popular events, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland and D-Nice are accomplished music creators in their own right.

Grammy-winning songwriter-producer Swizz Beatz has been in the music and business worlds since he was 16. He began DJing and working at his uncle’s company, Ruff Ryders Entertainment, while still in high school. Within a short time, Swizz produced the company’s first hit, by DMX. More success followed as a producer and artist. As a producer, Swizz has worked with a diverse array of artists, including Jay-Z, Madonna, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Metallica.

The 2021 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards is a virtual celebration that takes place on social media from June 22-24. The event recognizes songwriters, composers and publishers behind the most performed R&B/hip-hop, rap and gospel songs of the past year. The Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) has announced the panelists and performers for their 2021 virtual event, including the 34-year-old Mexican singer and composer.

Morrison is scheduled to appear in a panel entitled “The Creative Process in Pandemic Times.” She’ll appear alongside Guaynaa, Eduardo Cabra, Alizzz, Aureo Baqueiro and Universal Music Latin‘s Aldo González.

 

For the second edition of its “Wonder Women of Latin Music” event, this year’s honorees and panelists include Sony Music‘s Maria Fernández, ASCAP‘s Gabriela González, Universal Music Spain‘s Alicia Arauzo, YouTube‘s Sandra Jimenez, Warner Music Latin‘s Gabriela Martinez and The Orchard‘s Laura Tesoriero.

Other panels include “Afro-Latino!” The panel includes producer Sergio George and artists Mabiland, Fidel Nadal, Carlos Alomar, La Dame Blanche and Akapellah.

Daddy Yankee Named Songwriter of the Year at This Year’s ASCAP Latin Music Awards

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has revealed the 2021 winners of the ASCAP Latin Music Awards, with the 45-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton singer/rapper earning the top prize.

Honoring the most performed Latin songs of the past year, Daddy Yankee nabbed the title of ASCAP Songwriter of the Year for the third time, following his songwriter-artist of the year wins in 2019 and 2017. Yankee has a total of 42 ASCAP Latin Music Awards.

The reggaeton veteran had a promising year with many collaborations that included Sech, Play-N-Skillz, Zion & Lennox, Anuel AA, and Kendo Kaponi, to name a few.

He closed off 2020 with his Marc Anthony-assisted salsa single “De Vuelta Pa’ La Vuelta,” which arrived at No. 6 on the Hot Latin Songs chart (dated Dec. 26). His current single “Problema” debuted at No. 9 on the chart dated March 13, earning him his 36th top 10 on the list, which blends airplay, streams, and digital sales.

Meanwhile, Karol G and Nicki Minaj’s viral collaboration “Tusa,” which became the first song by two lead female artists to debut at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs, received the ASCAP Song of the Year award.

“Tusa,” which is an empowering ode to heartbreak, was written by Keityn and Juan Camilo Vargas Vásquez and published by Girl Power Publishing, JCV Music, KCMusic, Kobalt, and Sony Music Publishing.

Bad Bunny Wins ASCAP Songwriter of the Year at ASCAP Latin Music Awards

It’s a special first for Bad Bunny

ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) has revealed the winners of the most performed songs of the past year in Latin music, with the 26-year-old Puerto Rican singer and rapper taking the top honor for the first time in his career.

Bad Bunny, who’d previously won the ASCAP Song of the Year award for his Cardi BJ Balvin collaboration “I Like It.,” was named the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year at the ASCAP Latin Music Awards. He won the prestigious award on the strength of seven of his recognized singles, including “Callaita,” “La Cancion,” “Que Pretendes,” and “Solo de Mi.”

Romeo Santos picked up the Songwriter/Artist of the Year award. The 38-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer earned the honor for penning the recognized singles “Aullando,” “Canalla,” and “Inmortal.”

The Song of the Year award went to Daddy Yankee’s “Con Calma,” featuring Snow.

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton rapper/singer’s uptempo reggaeton and dancehall song, a reimagination of Snow’s chart-topping single “Informer,” was YouTube’s most viewed music video of 2019.


Other recognized artists include Gerado Ortiz (“Aerolinea Carrillo”), Becky G (“Bubalu”), FarrukoPedro Capo (“Calma (Remix)”), Marc Anthony (“Parecen Viernes”),Jhay Cortez (“Reggaeton,” “Hola” ) and Carlos Vives(“Si Me Das Tu Amor”).

Universal Music Publishing Group was bestowed the Publisher of the Year award and the Independent Publisher of the Year award went to Kobalt Songs Music Publishing.  

Due to the coronavirus, this year’s winners were announced via ASCAP’s social media platforms: @ASCAPLatino and @ASCAP. The innovative virtual format allowed fans, friends and peers to join in the online celebration.

The virtual event, hosted by Greeicy Rendón and Mike Bahía, also included special performances and appearances by: Marc Anthony, Descemer Bueno, Pedro Capó,Desmond Child, Jhay Cortez, Darrell, Natalia Lafourcade, Lunay, Silverio Lozada andSebastián Yatra, among other music creators.

Medrano to Participate at This Year’s Billboard Latin Music Conference

Manuel Medrano is representing the next generation of hitmakers…

The 29-year-old Colombian singer and songwriter will speak at the “I Write the Song, the New Generation” panel at this year’s Billboard Latin Music Conference.

Medrano will be joined by fellow hitmakers Joss Favela, Servando, Horacio Palencia, Erika Ender and The Rude Boyz on the panel..

Medrano is a Latin Grammy-winning singer/songwriter known for his romantic ballads like “Una y otra vez“; regional Mexican singer Favela is ASCAP‘s 2016 & 2017 songwriter of the year; while Palencia is a five-time BMI songwriter of the year.

Servando is the songwriter behind Enrique Iglesias‘ Grammy-nominated hit “Duele el corazón“; Ender co-wrote Luis Fonsi‘s chart-topping hit “Despacito“; and to round out the panelists are The Rude Boyz, hitmakers behind Shakira’s “Chantaje” and Maluma’s “Borró cassette.”

The “I Write the Song” panel will take place April 26. Other confirmed panels and panelists include “Socializing Maluma” featuring the Colombian superstar; “The Latin Trap Panel” with artists like Farruko, Ozuna and Bad Bunny; and the memoirs and biopics panel titled “Me, Me, Me” with Ednita Nazario.

The 2017 Billboard Latin Music Conference will kick off on April 24 with more panels and panelists set to be announced in the upcoming weeks leading up the conference.

Garcia to Perform at This Year’s ASCAP Latin Music Awards

Kany Garcia is preparing for her great ASCAP

The 34-year-old Puerto Rican singer-songwriter will perform at the 25th annual ASCAP Latin Music Awards.

Garcia, a two-time Latin Grammy winner, including Best New Artist in 2008, joins a lineup of confirmed performers that includes Jacob Forever, Noel Schajris, Joss Favela and Silverio Lozada.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Vanderbilt Hotel in Condado in Puerto Rico on March 15.

This year, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers will honor iconic salsa group El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico and singer/songwriter Vico C during the ceremony hosted by José Santana.

El Gran Combo will be honored with the ASCAP Latin Heritage Award in recognition of their “unique and enduring contributions to Latin music” while urban music pioneer Vico C will receive the ASCAP Vanguard Award.

ASCAP will also present accolades to songwriter of the year, singer/songwriter of the year, publisher of the year, independent publisher of the year and Latin song of the year.

Last year, the annual awards show was hosted at the Ritz Carlton in South Beach, Miami, with standout performances by Natalia Lafourcade, Favela, who became the youngest-ever songwriter of the year winner, and Gente de Zona.
