Ricky Martin Partners with Lin-Manuel Miranda & Hispanic Federation to Launch Advance Change Together Initiative

Ricky Martin is hoping to advance change in support of the LGBTQ+ community…

This week, the 50-year-old Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and actor has teamed up with Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Hispanic Federation have announced Advance Change Together (ACT), a new initiative to support Latinx-led LGBTQ+ organizations.

Ricky Martin“Mi gente, we are always more powerful together,” Martin said in a video shared on social media. “We must unite to fight against attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, and speak up for the most marginalized among us.”

According to a press release, the initiative “will empower and support organizations working on the frontlines to protect and serve LGBTQ+ Latinx communities.”

The announcement was made June 14 as Pride Month festivities continue and just days after the six-year remembrance of the 49 lives that were taken during the Pulse Club massacre in Orlando, Fla.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is getting political…

The 40-year-old Puerto Rican acclaimed singer, rapper, composer, producer and playwright and other members of the cast of the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton, which he created, and Pearl Jam will headline online fundraisers to help Democrats win U.S. Senate seats in the coming January 5 runoff elections.

If Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff win their races, the Senate will be at a 50-50 breakdown between the parties, but soon-to-be Vice President Kamala Harris would break a tie.

Pearl Jam will join Miranda for a conversation about their artistic inspirations, with Wayne Brady as the emcee. The event will take place at 8:30 pm ET on December 16 on the virtual platform Looped. Tickets start at $10 per person, with proceeds going to the Latino Victory Project, the Latino Community Fund of Georgia and the Hispanic Federation.

Miranda and other members of the cast of Hamilton also are participating in a December 13 fundraiser for Georgia Democrats, Ossoff and Warnock in a livestream set for 8:30 pm ET. Others scheduled to participate include Leslie Odom Jr, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Javier Muñoz, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Ariana DeBose, Sydney James Harcourt, Carleigh Bettiol, Andrew Chappelle, Alysha Deslorieux, Morgan Marcell, Austin Smith and Betsy Struxness. There is no set ticket price, but the invite suggests $30.

The Hamilton cast also reunited in October for a fundraiser for Biden’s campaign.

The last time there was such a 50-50 split was in 2001, with Republicans having control because the Vice President was Dick Cheney.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is doing his part to get out the vote…

The 38-year-old Puerto Rican composer, lyricist, playwright, rapper, and actor, best known for creating and starring in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals In the Heights and Hamilton, has joined forces with salsero Frankie Negrón to support the voter mobilization coalition Respeta Mi Gente, which is focusing on inspiring voters in Puerto Rican communities in Central Florida to get out to the polls in less than two weeks.

“There was such a massive influx of Puerto Ricans to the mainland after Hurricane Maria,” Miranda said during a media call, according to a statementannouncing the effort.

“One of the most important things they can do is vote for the candidates [who] have been paying attention to what’s been happening on the island.”

That’s why Miranda and Negrón joined the drive spearheaded by the non-profits Alianza for Progress and Hispanic Federation to get Latinx voters to the polls with a series of television and radio ads as well as Negrón’s song “Respecta Mi Gente.”

The remix take on Hector Lavoe and the Fania All Stars‘ 1975 hit “Mi Gente” is an attempt to lift spirits after a difficult 12 months. “We’re using Hector Lavoe’s song and voice to address what a difficult year this has been for Puerto Ricans, and for all Latinos in general,” said Negrón in a statement.

Respeta Mi Gente has a few key goals, some of which include helping Puerto Rico recover from the devastation of HurricanesIrma and Maria, and encouraging Puerto Ricans in Florida to vote in order to give a voice to their family and friends on the island — who are American citizens, but are not allowed to vote in national elections. The organization has a full calendar of events planned over the next few weeks, from a senior voting drive on Friday (October 26), to a Scary Phone Bank event on Halloween (October 31) and a Boricua Vota auto show on November 3.

An estimated 5.4 million Puerto Ricans live in the United States, including 30,000 who moved to the mainland after being displaced by Maria in 2017. Florida has the highest concentration of Puerto Rican residents in the country, concentrated in Central Florida, one of the key battleground spots in this year’s midterms, according to the organization.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is heading back to the stage…

The 37-year-old Puerto Rican composer, lyricist, playwright, and actor will return to play Alexander Hamilton in his smash musical Hamilton when it plays in San Juan, Puerto Rico in January.

Miranda and producer Jeffrey Seller broke the news on the stage of the Teatro UPR theater in San Juan. The University of Puerto Rico venue was damaged during Hurricane Maria in September but will be restored and repaired in time for the musical’s open.

It will mark the first time Miranda, the creator-star of the Tony Award– and Pulitzer Prize-winning show, will perform the title role since he stepped down in July 2016. The three weeks of performances will run January 8-27.

“Bringing [Hamilton] to Puerto Rico is a dream that I’ve had since we first opened at The Public Theater in 2015,” Miranda in a statement, as reported by Playbill. “When I last visited the island, a few weeks before Hurricane Maria, I had made a commitment to not only bring the show to Puerto Rico, but also return again to the title role. In the aftermath of Maria we decided to expedite the announcement of the project to send a bold message that Puerto Rico will recover and be back in business, stronger than ever.”

Miranda is in Puerto Rico to aid recovery efforts. On Monday, he joined forces with the Hispanic Federation to announce the launch of a $2.5 million recovery fund and the first seven recipients to help seed projects encompassing micro-enterprise, housing, arts and culture, and conservation efforts, among others.

Hamilton, which won 11 Tony Awards, is on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers and is amidst a Los Angeles run that ends December 30.

The 36-year-old Broadway star will be honored in Puerto Rico with his very own star in the island’s Walk of Fame.

The Hamilton creator and award-winning artist is set to reveal his star on Wednesday, July 27 on La Isla del Encanto’s iconic Ashford Avenue.

“For us, it is great news that Lin-Manuel Miranda will join us during this ceremony. He is an international artist who has given Puerto Rico great pride because of his success with Hamilton. It’s an honor and much happiness that he has accepted our invitation to be present when we reveal his star,” said founder of Puerto Rico’s Walk of Fame Santiago Villar in a statement.

Miranda recently performed for the last time with Hamilton’s original cast.

He also recently released the peace and love anthem “Love Make The World Go Round” with Jennifer Lopez, which was inspired by Orlando Shooting victims; proceeds will benefit the Hispanic Federation‘s Proyecto Somos Orlando initiative, which pledges to “address the long-term needs for mental health services that are culturally competent and bilingual.”

The 46-year-old Puerto Rican singer/actress and the 36-year-old Broadway star performed their new peace anthem entitled “Love Make the World Go Round,” inspired by the Orlando Shooting, on Today on Monday morning.

The track, made available for download on July 7 on iTunes, benefits the Hispanic Federation‘s Proyecto Somos Orlando initiative, which “will address the long-term needs for mental health services that are culturally competent and bilingual.

The initiative will enable care to be delivered to those affected directly in the communities in which they live. Beyond emergency assistance, they will be provided with case management, crisis intervention and mental health services, among other needs.

Fifty survivors and family members of the victims of the Orlando tragedy were present in the Rockefeller Plaza crowd for the performance.

Beginning with a clip of the Hamilton creator’s “Love is love” speech at the Tony Awards, the dance track features Miranda rapping about peace and love (“A generation of innovators enabled to patiently wait for change ’cause change is what they’ve been afraid of / the malevolence can wait, raise a level of debate, celebrate, elevate”) while Lopez sings the titular line to ring in the chorus: “We’re not staying inside today / they’re not taking our pride away.”

How did the song come to be? Lopez explained on Today that she’s had the song for eight months, but “when everything happened in Orlando, I heard it in a different way for the first time. I was like, ‘The world needs this right now. The world really needs the message of love being the answer. That’s what really matters; that’s what really makes the world go round, nothing else. Hate, anger, it’s not gonna get us anywhere.'” She then approached Miranda about rapping on the bridge of the track.

The 46-year-old Puerto Rican singer/actress is joining voices with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda on new single to benefit the Orlando shooting victims.

Lopez and Miranda tweeted on Monday about their new track, entitled “Love Make the World Go Round.”

The song will benefit the Hispanic Federation‘s Proyecto Somos Orlando initiative, which “will address the long-term needs for mental health services that are culturally competent and bilingual. Proyecto will enable care to be delivered to those affected directly in the communities in which they live. Beyond emergency assistance, they will be provided with case management, crisis intervention, and mental health services, among other needs.”

Miranda teased the track on Twitter as “a taste of some new music you don’t need tickets to hear.”

The accompanying video features Miranda rapping about peace and love (“A generation of innovators enabled to patiently wait for change ’cause change is what they’ve been afraid of / the malevolence can wait, raise a level of debate, celebrate, elevate.”) while Lopez sings the titular line to ring in the chorus: “We’re not staying inside today / they’re not taking our pride away.”
