Angela Aguilar Becomes Youngest Act on a Lead Role to Earn No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay Chart with Christian Nodal Collab “Dime Como Quieres”

She’s only 17, but Angela Aguilar is already making her mark in the Latin music world…

The collaboration between Christian Nodal and the 17-year-old Mexican American singer, “Dime Como Quieres,” has risen 2-1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart dated January 30.

Angela Aguilar

In the process, Aguilar becomes the youngest female act on a lead role to achieve the feat. She concurrently picks up her first No. 1 on any Latin airplay chart while Nodal captures his 10th on Latin Airplay.

“The truth is that I received the news in the most quotidian way,” Aguilar tells Billboard. “I was having breakfast with my family, huevos en salsa, surrounded by many dogs. It was a very nice surprise, a great privilege, a great honor that I was not expecting to receive at such a young age.”

“Dime Como Quieres” jumps from the runner-up slot with 13% increase in audience impressions, to 8 million, earned in the week ending January 24, according to MRC Data. The song, which debuted in the top 20 in November and earned Aguilar her first entry, leads the list in its 10th frame. It’s Nodal’s fourth consecutive No. 1 and 10th overall.

“Chris and I had worked together on the Jaripeo Sin Fronteras tour, my father invited him to open the concert for us,” Aguilar remembers. “We have known each other for four or five years now so it was a genuine experience: a friend asking a friend to record a song. He sent my father a song telling him that something was missing from his album and that he believed that something was me. So, we got in touch, changed a few arrangements but always respecting his expectations. I think it changed how people of this generation see music.”

Notably, Aguilar is just the sixth female act on a lead role to rule Regional Mexican Airplay since the chart’s inception in 1994. She joins Selena, Pilar Montenegro, Alicia Villarreal, Jenni Rivera and Graciela Beltrán.

Aguilar, likewise, takes the baton as just the second female act on a lead role to pick-up her first No. 1 with first entry. Pilar Montenegro captured her first leader on a first try with “Quítame Ese Hombre” in March 2002.

At 17-years-old, she concurrently is the youngest female act in a lead role to reach No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay. The late Selena secured her first Regional Mexican No. 1 with the five-week leader “No Me Queda Más” in 1994, she was 23, three months prior to her death.

Here’s a look at the female leaderboard:

Artist, Title, Debut/Peak Date, Age
Selena, “No Me Queda Más,” Dec. 3, 1994, 23-years-old
Pilar Montenegro, “Quítame Ese Hombre,” March 23, 2002, 29-years-old
Alicia Villarreal, “Soy Tu Mujer,” August 14, 2004, 32-years-old
Jenni Rivera, “De Contrabando,” June 3, 2006, 37-years-old
Graciela Beltrán, “Es Cosa De El,” May 5, 2007, 32 -ears-old
Ángela Aguilar, “Dime Como Quieres,” with Christian Nodal, Jan. 30, 2021, 17-years-old

About the collaboration Aguilar adds: “Not being able to see each other or record together and brainstorm ideas about the video was a bit challenging. Due to the current situation, I was in Zacatecas and he was in Guadalajara. It was a bit difficult because, especially for a collaboration, one wants to have that energy, that vibe, and feel that the job is well done, and at a distance it was defiant.”

Chiquis Rivera & Becky G Release Cumbia-fied Version of Dolly Parton’s Classic Song “Jolene”

Chiquis Rivera is giving a Dolly Parton classic a Mexican cumbia twist…

The 34-year-old Mexican American singer has joined voices with Becky G torelease a new version of Dolly Parton’s 1974 hit “Jolene.”

Becky G & Chiquis

On the track, Chiquis and the 23-year-old Mexican American singer/rapper belt the classic lyrics en español over a cumbia beat.

Chiquis & Becky G, longtime friends, have been waiting for the opportunity to collaborate on a song.

Chiquis, the daughter of the late Jenni Rivera, decided to reach out to Parton’s team and was pleasantly surprised when they gave their seal of approval.

“Dolly is an icon in music and for women. An example to follow and it is an honor to sing this song in Spanish,” the Chiquis told Telemundo.

Becky G was thrilled to fuse both her Mexican and American roots on the classic song.

“I was fascinated by the idea because it brings together our two worlds. When they ask me where I am from, I always say that I am Mexican. I never say that my grandparents are Mexican and I am American,” the “Sin Pijama”singer said. “However, country music was always heard in my house, with the Mexican, and our ‘Jolene’ is that. It has the essence of Dolly with a little bit of our itch.”

Jolene is the third single from Chiquis’ latest album PLAYLIST. For the women, it was the perfect time for them to come together for one of the biggest songs in history. “We were waiting for the right one, and although I never thought it would come from country, it worked perfectly.”

Chiquis and Becky G will release the music video for the track in the near future. The ladies teased the release on their respective social media accounts with clips. In the clips, the women hold guns as they ride through the dessert.

Jenni Rivera’s Family Releases New Single by the Late Singer “Aparentemente Bien” to Commemorate Her 50th Birthday

Jenni Rivera’s family is commemorating her 50th birthday in a special way…

The Riveras havedebuted a new emotional ballad recorded at the prime of the late singer’s career before she died in a plane crash in 2012.

Jenni Rivera

Aparentemente Bien” is about a broken heart and shows an emotional side of the regional Mexican star who is heard having a heart-rending moment during the recording of the song.

“I was surprised she was crying,” says Jenni’s sister Rosie Rivera. “To allow herself to be so vulnerable. I think it’s an empowering song and she was living in the moment.”

The song was discovered by sibling Juan Riveraon a hard drive, among several others, about three years ago after his sister died. “It was like a puzzle,” says Rosie, referring to the discovery of the songs. “To hear Jenni’s voice with a new song is a spectacular feeling.”

The Rivera family decided to wait for the right moment before releasing the track, which will be followed by others in a span of about a year before a new album debuts, Rosie said. The new music is part of several projects that were recently announced, including a biopic, among other projects.

“We weren’t sure about releasing this music three years ago,” Rosie said. “We weren’t sure if the world was ready, if the kids were ready. We feel everyone is getting a better place and is ready for her 50th birthday (July 2), the golden year. We want to give her the best.”

The new song was written by “Despacito” co-writer Erica Enderand Alejandro Lerner. Ender met Rivera in 2009 at a Miami after party following the Billboard Latin Music Awardsand both talked about music and working together. Ender sent Rivera music for consideration.

“I didn’t hear anything from Jenni,” Ender tells Billboard. “When I recently heard the song I thought it was Jenni’s daughter singing. When her family told me it was actually Jenni it was so emotional. The lyrics of the song also relate to how people feel about her loss.”

Rosie calls this new chapter part of a “takeover year” as a gift to fans who will see and hear different sides of the singer with many surprises along the way. Marlon Villardirected the “Aparentemente Bien” video, which features a substantial cast, including the Rivera family, actors portraying real moments from the Long Beach, Calif.-born singer’s life and stories that fans have lived as well and continue sharing with the Riveras.

Villar conceived and directed Ricardo Arjona‘s first-ever animated music video “El Cielo a Mi Favor” in 2018. The new Rivera music video has aWalt Disneytouch featuring Villar’s vibrant style.

The filmmakers of the new video also traveled to Iturbide, Mexico, where Rivera died. This week’s launch includes a new Jenni Rivera makeup line and a day after Fourth of July, Rivera’s image and new music will be part of a Times Squarebillboard for the day through aSpotifycampaign. The digital music platform will also celebrate Rivera’s birthday with a video series going live on July 2.

“This is a way to feel my daughter again,” said Rivera’s mother Doña Rosa. “She’ll continue singing and we are happy about that, but it’s also bittersweet because I won’t get to see her. But I feel her in my heart.”
