Karol G Earns 16th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Mi Ex Tenía Razón”

Karol G is celebrating her sweet sixteen

The 32-year-old Colombian singer has earned her 16th No. 1 on Billboard’Latin Airplay chart with “Mi Ex Tenía Razón,” which rises 3-1 in its seventh chart week to lead the October 7-dated ranking.

Karol G“Mi Ex Tenía Razón” was released on August 11 as part of Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season), which took her to No. 1 on Top Latin Albums (August 26-dated list).

The track arrives at the summit on the overall Latin Airplay after it earned 9.8 million audience impressions in the U.S. in the week ending September 28, according to Luminate, a 16% gain from the week prior.

It ejects Chencho Corleone’s “Un Cigarrillo” from the lead and sends it to No. 9, after one week in charge (6.41million in audience, down 28%)

With the new leader, Karol G becomes the first woman to achieve a No. 1 as a soloist, unaccompanied by any other act, in 2023. The last woman to do so was Rosalía, who accomplished the feat through “Despechá” in October 2022.

In total, among Karol G’s 16 No. 1s, she’s led the Latin Airplay chart five times, unaccompanied by another act. Her first leader overall was “Mi Cama,” with J Balvin, featuring Nicky Jam, in 2018.

Prior to “Mi Ex Tenia Razón,” “Provenza” became Karol G’s last totally solo ruler, for one week in charge in July 2022. In between, “TQG,” a collaboration with Shakira, spent two weeks at No. 1.

The new peak of “Mi Ex Tenia Razón” on Latin Airplay, arrives after its one-week coronation on Hot Latin Songs (August 26-dated list), where it dips 5-6 on the current chart with a 7% decrease in streams, to 7.56 million, and an 18% fall in sales during the same period.

Beyond its Latin Airplay coronation, “Mi Ex Tenia Razón” also pushes up Regional Mexican Airplay, climbing 39-23. The song earned Karol G a first entry on the chart when it debuted at No. 39 (September 30-dated list).

Karol G Earns Ninth No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Bichota”

Karol G has another smash on her hands…

The 29-year-old Colombian singer and songwriter has notched her ninth No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart dated February 13, as “Bichota” climbs 5-1.

Karol G

The female anthem pushes to the top thanks to a 23% spike in audience impressions, to 12 million, earned in the week ending February 7, according to MRC Data.

The audience improvement also makes the song just the second No. 1 by a solo woman, unaccompanied by any other artist, to reach No. 1 this decade — and both are by Karol G.

Greatest gainers for the song in the tracking week were: WODA San Juan, P.R. (up 392,000 in audience); WPAT New York (up 347,000); WSKQ New York (up 307,000); and KAMA Houston (up 268,000).

Before “Bichota,” Karol G previously reached the Latin Airplay summit completely solo with “Ay, Dios Mío!” (October 10, 2020), both as a female soloist. She’s also secured a spot at the penthouse seven other times, all via collaborative efforts, dating back to “Mi Cama,” with J Balvin, featuring Nicky Jam. The triple-billed act spent one week atop the ranking in August 2018.

Karol G is the sixth female soloist to reach No. 1 on Latin Airplay with a song unaccompanied by another act since 2010.

Here’s the leaderboard:

Artist, Title, Debut/Peak Date
Gloria Estefan, “Hotel Nacional,” Jan. 14, 2012 (debut)
Paulina Rubio, “Me Gustas Tanto,” Feb. 11, 2012
Leslie Grace, “Will U Still Love Me Tomorrow,” Oct. 27, 2012
Katherine Alexander, “Put It In a Kiss,” Jan. 18, 2014
Jennifer Lopez, “El Anillo,” July 14, 2018
Karol G, “Ay, Dios Mío!,” Oct. 10, 2020
Karol G, “Bichota,” Feb. 13, 2021

Aside from its Latin Airplay coronation, the Ovy on the Drums-produced track captures its highest ranking on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, jumping 75-72.

Meanwhile, on the airplay-, streaming-, digital sales-blended Hot Latin Songs chart, “Bichota” returns to its No. 3 high (4-3), where its spent seven previous weeks.

Antonio “Rayito” Rayo Signs with SESAC Latina

It’s a new deal for Antonio Rayo…

SESAC Latina has signed the Spanish composer and producer, known as Rayito.

Antonio "Rayito" Rayo

His notable writing credits include Shakira’s “Me Enamoré” and Karol G’s “Mi Cama” and “Punto G.”

Originally from Madrid, Rayito was touring as a flamenco guitarist at the age of 8, and recorded his first album when he was 10.

At just 15, he moved to Miami and began collaborating with Latin pop stars. Rayito previously had a publishing deal with Sony Music.

Among Rayito’s other credits, he wrote and produced several tracks on Ricky Martin’s 2015 album A Quien Quiera Escuchar and co-wrote Diego Torres’ hit single “Hoy Es Domingo.

Jorge Drexler: The Big Winner at This Year’s Latin Grammys

It’s a moment to remember for Jorge Drexler

The 54-year-old Uruguayan musician, who won an Oscar winner for composing the song “Al Otro Lado del Río” from The Motorcycle Diaries, proved to be the big winner at the 2018 Latin Grammys at Thursday’s awards show, which aired live from the MGM Grand Arena Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Univision.

Jorge Drexler

Drexler, who’d previously won two Latin Grammys in 2015, took home the Song of the Year and Record of the Year awards for his single “Telefonía,” as well as the Best Singer/Songwriter Album for Salvavidas de hielo.

Drexler’s wins in the record and song categories came as a major surprise. He was up against favorites J Balvin — who had eight nominations — and Rosalía, whose captivating single “Malamente” was up for five awards.

The 25-year-old Spanish singer/songwriter, whose full name is Rosalía Vila Tobella, has gained global acclaim with her surprising fusion of flamenco and urban music. And she picked up the first two Latin Grammys of her career, winning Best Alternative Song and Best Urban/Fusion Performance for “Malamente.”

Also taking home two Latin Grammys was Victor Manuelle, who won Best Tropical Song and Best Salsa Album. It was, surprisingly, the first Latin Grammy wins for the 50-year-old Puerto Rican salsa singer, a veteran who has often been nominated.

Mexican superstar Luis Miguel, who’s had an enormous resurgence following the successful mini-series based on his life, also won two awards for his album ¡MÉXICO Por Siempre!  The set won Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album and, surprisingly, Album of the Year, a prize Luis Miguel hadn’t claimed since 2000’s Amarte es un placer.

Luis Fonsi has calypso’ed his way back into the Top 10 on the charts…

The 40-year-old Puerto Rican singer’s “Calypso” climbs 13-9 on the Billboard Latin Rhythm Songs airplay chart after a full tracking week (August 20-26) of the song’s new remix with Karol G, which was released August 17.

Luis Fonsi

The song advances with an 18 percent surge in audience in the week ending August 26.

For Fonsi, “Calypso” marks his fourth Latin Rhythm Songs Top 10. Each of his previous hits came in between 2008-2017, two as a lead act and one as co-lead act. “Yo No Me Doy Por Vencindo” reached No. 8 in 2008, “Aquí Estoy Yo” peaked at No. 4 in 2009, and the smash “Despacito” alongside Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber, which led for 20 nonconsecutive weeks (March-July 2017).

Karol G, meanwhile picks up her second top 10, which includes one No. 1: “Mi Cama” with J Balvinfeaturing Nicky Jam.

Karol G Earns First No. 1 on Any Billboard Chart with “Mi Cama”

It’s a special first for Karol G

The 27-year-old Colombian reggaeton singer/songwriter has notched her first No. 1 on any Billboard airplay chart as “Mi Cama” rises 5-1 on the Latin Airplay chart.

Karol G

The song, a collaboration with J Balvin and Nicky Jam, lifts thanks to a 32 percent gain in audience impressions in the week ending August 19, according to Nielsen Music.

The track was originally released May 11 and received its Nicky Jam and J Balvin-assisted remix on July 13, steadily rising in airplay since. Concurrently, “Mi Cama” becomes her first Latin Rhythm Airplay No. 1, lifting 5-1.

“For my song to hit No. 1 among so many others, so much talent, and so much good music is huge and at the same time hard to describe,” Karol G tells Billboard. “’Mi Cama’ vibrates to the rhythm of my dreams, and finding out about this achievement gives me all the motivation to look forward to the next chapter with more confidence. Extremely grateful!”
