Universal Music Publishing Group to Administer Publishing Rights to Jenni Rivera’s Global Catalog

The late Jenni Rivera’s global catalog has a new administrator…

The Jenni Rivera Estate has signed a global deal with Universal Music Publishing Group to administer the publishing rights for the late banda singer’s global catalog.

Jenni Rivera“I’m so excited about this new partnership with Universal Music Publishing. It’ll bring great achievements for my mom’s legacy and for Jenni Rivera Enterprises,” said Jacqie Rivera, CEO of Jenni Rivera Enterprises, in a statement. “We’re confident that this amazing group of empowered women behind Universal Music Publishing will help expand the Jenni Rivera music catalog, something that our mother would have loved. Our mom had her hand in making this decision. While looking through her files, we found an email from years back showing that it was her plan all along to go with Universal Music Publishing.”

Jacqie — the second of Jenni’s five children — took over as head of the Jenni Rivera estate in January 2022, signaling a change of direction in the management of Jenni Rivera’s estate, which had been helmed by Jenni’s sister, Rosie Rivera, since the singer’s death in 2012.

After taking the reins, Jackie — along with her four siblings Chiquis, Mike, Jenicka and Johnny — released the posthumous album Misión Cumplida in June featuring original recordings they discovered after taking over the estate.

Jenni — at the pinnacle of her career — tragically died in 2012 at 43 years old. The most successful woman in Regional Mexican on the Billboard charts, she has a total of 19 entries on Top Latin Albums, 12 of which reached the top 10 and seven of which topped the chart.

She has earned a total of 12 entries on the Billboard 200 and has 14 top 10 hits on the Regional Mexican Airplay tally.

“We share the news of the signing of the Jenni Rivera Estate with much joy! Jenni was someone who inspired the fans of her music and empowered them,” added Alexandra Lioutikoff, president of Latin America & U.S. Latin, Universal Music Publishing Group. “She was a fighter and a woman with much success, and her music will always be remembered because it opened many doors for women in the regional Mexican genre.”

Jenni Rivera’s Family to Release New, Never-Released Music by the Late Banda Queen

There’s new music by Jenni Rivera headed your way…

As the 10-year anniversary of the late Mexican American singer’s death in a plane crash over Mexico (in December, 2012) approaches, her family is planning to share new music with the world.

Jenni RiveraNever-released music she left recorded before her death will see the light of day, according to daughter Jacqie Rivera, who in January took over from her aunt Rosie Rivera as head of the Jenni Rivera estate.

“It’s definitely music in Spanish, it’s more than one song, and it’s regional Mexican,” Jacqie Rivera tells Billboard in her first interview since she took over her mother’s estate. “I think it’s very important that we tie in how she started, what [music] put her up there, and share that.”

The new tracks will be part of a full-fledged album of brand-new Rivera songs set for release before the end of the year. The set will include at least some of the 11 other unreleased songs that the Rivera estate found after Jenni Rivera’s passing, and will be released by Sony Music U.S. Latin. Several of the tracks will be produced by Sergio Lizárraga, the head of Banda MS and owner of Lizos Music.

Music in English is also on the way, although plans for those releases have yet to be finalized.

The music releases are the core of a series of actions that the estate is spearheading this year. Among them is a concert commemorating Rivera’s death — which will feature performances by her children, and which Jacqie Rivera describes as “a la Coachella” — and a long-planned biopic, which has long been discussed but is now firmly in the planning stages.

The moves signal a change of direction in the management of Jenni Rivera’s estate, which had been helmed by her sister, Rosie, since her death. Now, the reins have amicably passed to Jacqie, the second of Rivera’s five children. (The five are recording star Chiquis Rivera, Jacqie Rivera and Michael Marín from Rivera’s first marriage, and Jenicka and Johnny Angel, from her second marriage.)

All five siblings are now part of the estate’s advisory board and are actively involved in major decision-making, says Jacqie.

“The little decisions, I make them. For the big decisions, we all get together and we all vote,” she explains. “My little brother Johnny is working alongside with me, especially for the music. He’s always been involved in producing, and we’re working closely together. But we definitely need each other, all of us together, to really do it. There’s always meetings, phone calls, zooms. We’re all busy but we make it happen.”

When Rivera died in 2012, at 43 years old, she was the single most successful woman in regional Mexican on the Billboard charts — with over 26 entries on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart — and at the pinnacle of her career. But she was also on the verge of much more.

She was on the verge of a major crossover, having become the first Latina ever to sign a production deal to star in her own TV series on a major U.S. network and about to have her own residency in Las Vegas. On the verge of a cinematic career, Rivera played her first role in a major film, Filly Brown. On the verge of fulfilling her dream of becoming the “Latina Oprah,” with the continued success of her weekly radio show, Contacto Directo con Jenni Rivera. And on the verge of massive stardom in Mexico, following her stint as the most popular coach on season 2 of La Voz.

Perhaps most importantly to her, after years of being the sole provider for her family, she was finally finding the time to truly enjoy her children and her grandchildren. But her death left her children reeling. Only now, says Jacqie, does she feel ready to take control of her mother’s estate.

“My mom was such a big part…she was our everything,” says Rivera. “I don’t think any of us kids would have been ready to do this job because it’s a lot of work. For sure, I’m ready now.”

As part of the changes implemented since she took over, Rivera tapped Izabel Nicholas as general manager for Jenni Rivera Enterprises and Oswaldo Rossi has remained as the estate’s lawyer. Entotal Agency, the management firm headed by Jorge Sánchez and Tom Muzquiz with Pitbull as a partner is handling artist management.

“Being part of the Jenni Rivera team is an honor and a privilege,” says Sánchez, whose company started working with the estate in March, at the recommendation of BMI CCO Alex Flores. “Working with Jacqie and Jenni Rivera Enterprises represents a great experience due to her vision, respect and the enthusiasm. Jenni Rivera died in the prime of her life, and the music she left behind reflects this vitality. We have a great task ahead, with many and amazing releases plus other projects from one of the most important names and legacies in Latin music.”

It all amounts to an outpouring of material that would have made Jenni Rivera proud, says Jacqie, whose eyes brighten when asked what she thinks her mother would tell her if she could see her now.

“I think she would remind me of what my name means: Jacqueline is a form of Jacob, and Jacob is a go-getter,” she responds. “She would always remind me of what my name meant. [So I think she would say] ‘You got this, you can do this.’ And as a mom, she’d also tell me I’m doing a good job — because sometimes, you really don’t know.”

New Posthumous Jenni Rivera Single, “Engañémoslo,” Released

Jenni Rivera’s legacy lives on with new single…

The late Mexican-American singer’s estate has released a new posthumous single titled “Engañémoslo.”

Jenni Rivera

The powerful and empowering mariachi song centers on having the strength to leave a violent relationship and the importance of self-worth.

The track, written by Espinoza Paz, is the latest single to be released by Rivera’s family and it was among the 11 songs that the family recently found in a hard drive.

“[Engañémoslo] will lift you up and we invite you to this movement because it’s about men, women, equality, we’re not trying to step on anybody, we just have to remember that we’re equals,” Rivera’s sister, Rosie, previously told Billboard. “That powerful, vicious woman is back.”

The chart-topping artist, who passed away in 2012, recorded multiple songs throughout her career written by Paz including “No Llega el Olvido” and “Inolvidable.”

Paz, who wrote “Engañémoslo” many years ago, didn’t know whether Rivera had recorded the song or not. To his surprise, she did.

“Destiny has brought us back together,” the Sinaloan singer-songwriter tells Billboard.

Jenni Rivera’s Family Releases New Single by the Late Singer “Aparentemente Bien” to Commemorate Her 50th Birthday

Jenni Rivera’s family is commemorating her 50th birthday in a special way…

The Riveras havedebuted a new emotional ballad recorded at the prime of the late singer’s career before she died in a plane crash in 2012.

Jenni Rivera

Aparentemente Bien” is about a broken heart and shows an emotional side of the regional Mexican star who is heard having a heart-rending moment during the recording of the song.

“I was surprised she was crying,” says Jenni’s sister Rosie Rivera. “To allow herself to be so vulnerable. I think it’s an empowering song and she was living in the moment.”

The song was discovered by sibling Juan Riveraon a hard drive, among several others, about three years ago after his sister died. “It was like a puzzle,” says Rosie, referring to the discovery of the songs. “To hear Jenni’s voice with a new song is a spectacular feeling.”

The Rivera family decided to wait for the right moment before releasing the track, which will be followed by others in a span of about a year before a new album debuts, Rosie said. The new music is part of several projects that were recently announced, including a biopic, among other projects.

“We weren’t sure about releasing this music three years ago,” Rosie said. “We weren’t sure if the world was ready, if the kids were ready. We feel everyone is getting a better place and is ready for her 50th birthday (July 2), the golden year. We want to give her the best.”

The new song was written by “Despacito” co-writer Erica Enderand Alejandro Lerner. Ender met Rivera in 2009 at a Miami after party following the Billboard Latin Music Awardsand both talked about music and working together. Ender sent Rivera music for consideration.

“I didn’t hear anything from Jenni,” Ender tells Billboard. “When I recently heard the song I thought it was Jenni’s daughter singing. When her family told me it was actually Jenni it was so emotional. The lyrics of the song also relate to how people feel about her loss.”

Rosie calls this new chapter part of a “takeover year” as a gift to fans who will see and hear different sides of the singer with many surprises along the way. Marlon Villardirected the “Aparentemente Bien” video, which features a substantial cast, including the Rivera family, actors portraying real moments from the Long Beach, Calif.-born singer’s life and stories that fans have lived as well and continue sharing with the Riveras.

Villar conceived and directed Ricardo Arjona‘s first-ever animated music video “El Cielo a Mi Favor” in 2018. The new Rivera music video has aWalt Disneytouch featuring Villar’s vibrant style.

The filmmakers of the new video also traveled to Iturbide, Mexico, where Rivera died. This week’s launch includes a new Jenni Rivera makeup line and a day after Fourth of July, Rivera’s image and new music will be part of a Times Squarebillboard for the day through aSpotifycampaign. The digital music platform will also celebrate Rivera’s birthday with a video series going live on July 2.

“This is a way to feel my daughter again,” said Rivera’s mother Doña Rosa. “She’ll continue singing and we are happy about that, but it’s also bittersweet because I won’t get to see her. But I feel her in my heart.”

Jenni Rivera Enterprises Agrees to Worldwide Distribution Deal with Sony Music Latin & The Orchard

The music of the late Jenni Rivera has a new home…

Jenni Rivera Enterprises has signed a worldwide distribution deal with Sony Music Latin and The Orchard to cover the late singer’s catalog.

Jenni Rivera

Rivera, a legend of Regional Mexican music through her career, died in a plane crash in December 2012, at the age of 43.

“In Sony Music Latin and The Orchard, we found exceptional partners for the next era of Jenni’s music,” said Jenni Rivera Enterprises CEO and Rivera’s sister, Rosie Rivera, in a statement. “Her music meant everything to her, and still does to so many people. Our commitment and highest responsibility is to maintain its integrity and impact. The Orchard and Sony Music Latin feel the exact same way.”

Between 1999 and 2012, Rivera released 12 studio albums and four live albums, five of which reached the top two slots on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart.

After her death, her popularity grew exponentially; two compilation albums and four additional live albums that were released in the four years following her passing all reached No. 1 on the Top Albums chart as well.

“Jenni Rivera’s contributions to the Regional Mexican genre are unparalleled,” The Orchard COO Colleen Theis said in a statement. “We are honored and excited to team up with Sony Music Latin and Jenni Rivera Enterprises to leverage our global network and bring her music to the world in a new way.”

As part of the deal, a “multi-tiered global marketing campaign” will be rolled out in order to push Rivera’s music and give it a new shine, according to a press release accompanying the announcement. Her music and catalog was previously distributed by Universal/Fonovisa, though, unusually, she had retained control of her masters throughout her career.

“We’re humbled and honored to be able to work alongside Rosie and [brother] Juan Rivera on Jenni’s legacy,” Sony Music U.S. Latin president Nir Seroussi said in a statement. “It’s an opportunity for her music to reach new audiences and for us to pay homage to a generation-defining superstar. She’s going to continue making history.”

Sony Music Latin Partners with Jenni Rivera’s Siblings to Develop Regional Mexican Stars

Jenni Rivera’s family is keeping her legacy alive…

Juan and Rosie Rivera, siblings of the late Mexican American Banda and ranchera singer who passed away in December 2012, have joined Sony Music Latin in a new venture to develop the next generation of regional Mexican stars.

Juan & Rosie Rivera

The announcement was made in Los Angeles earlier this week, where the Rivera family and Sony executives officially signed and agreed to commence a partnership between the Rivera’s Linea, LLC, and Sony.

“Juan and Rosie have been in the [music] game since they were born,” said Nir Seroussi, Sony Music Latin president, in an exclusive interview with Billboard. “Juan is very focused and chill. Rosie is very sharp and eloquent. We’re confident that Linea will soon become a major player in the market.”

It’s been nearly five years since Rivera died in a plane crash, while working in Mexico and since that time, numerous projects themed around the Long Beach, California, -born recording artist have been released, from albums to reality shows and merchandise.

Rosie, whose close-knit relationship with Jenni was undeniable, has spent the last five years helping to complete some of her sister’s dreams from releasing music to caring for her foundation and making sure she was there for her sibling’s children.

This new chapter, Rosie said, continues to honor her sister, but it’s different in that she will now have a more active role in the industry along with her brother, which is something that Jenni encouraged them to do years ago. While Jenni was signed to Fonovisa, under Universal Music Latin Entertainment, this new venture with Sony has nothing to do with Jenni music other than the fact that she always wanted to help launch the careers of others.

“I think Jenni would be very happy,” says Rosie. “I can see her smiling with tears of joy and her wide eyes. She invested so much love and discipline in her dreams. She told us she envisioned this for Juan and myself and she’s cheering us from heaven.”

In 2013, Rosie announced a similar venture, but it was in the form of a new label called JRE/Divina Music, which had already been in the works in 2010, two years before the singer died. That label was established to complete Jenni’s goals and that was met by supporting other artists. The new chapter begins with joining forces with Sony.

Rosie, an entrepreneur and motivational speaker, is the youngest of the Rivera family of singers. Since her sister’s death she has gone more public about her own struggles in the hopes of helping others. In 2015 she founded the movement Sister Somalia to support women who have been victims of sexual abuse, human trafficking, drugs and domestic violence in Latin America. Additionally, Rivera is active in her family’s Christian outreach ministry, helping single mothers find affordable housing through the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation.

Besides overseeing the Jenni Rivera estate with his sister Rosie, Juan is a recording artist with nearly a dozen albums to his name and has appeared in several reality shows with his family of singers that includes Lupillo Rivera and Chiquis Rivera.

Seroussi said that more details will be unveiled soon and those aspiring artists hoping to break into the business through the regional Mexican genre will have a chance to participate. The Sony executive wouldn’t confirm or deny what types of projects will be unveiled, but he reassures that they will be part of a thrill ride.

“This is a very special venture,” Seroussi said. “Having Juan and Rosie makes it that more exciting. Many things are going to happen.”

Jenni Rivera’s Sister, Rosie, to Release Book Entitled “Mis Pedazos Rotos”

There’s another Jenni Rivera-inspired book headed to a bookstore near you…

Rosie Rivera, the youngest sister of the late Mexican American singer, has written a book entitled Mis Pedazos Rotos.

Rosie Rivera Book Mis Pedazos Rotos

The book will go on sale on February 2, 2016, on Celebra, the Penguin imprint that has published memoirs by major Latin names, including Jennifer LopezRicky Martin and Emilio Estefan.

The bio’s tag line reads: “Healing scars from sexual abuse through faith, family and love.”

The youngest in the Rivera family, Rosie Rivera was thrust into the spotlight after the death in a plane crash of her famous older sister Jenni in 2012. Beloved by Jenni, Rosie was left in charge of her sister’s estate and her children.

But even prior to her older sister’s death, Rosie had spoken often of the sexual abuse she suffered as a child and of how she had survived and gone beyond the horrors.

Mis Pedazos Rotos marks the first time she tells the story in book form.

“Today, as I unveil the cover of my book, is the beginning of bringing a dream to life,” said Rivera in a statement “It’s a mission that began in my sister’s heart 18 years ago. When I told Jenni about being sexually abused, she planted a seed in my heart: ‘Sister, you have to write a book about your life to help other abused girls.’ At the time, I thought she was crazy….But she saw beyond the pain and the broken pieces. She saw Victory. Sister, the seed is bearing fruit. Thanks for motivating me to fight battles. It’s our victory. High freakin five sister!!!”

Rosie Rivera’s memoir will be the latest in a string of books attached to Jenni Rivera.

Following her death Billboard writer Leila Cobo published a biography titled Jenni Rivera: The Incredible Story of a Warrior Butterfly, on Penguin.  Then came Rivera’s own memoir, Unbreakable, which she had written prior to her death and which became a New York Times bestseller.

Earlier this year, her daughter, Chiquis Rivera, published a memoir titled Forgiveness. And in October, Atria (which also published Unbreakable) put out Jenni Vive: Unforgettable, Baby!, a collection of never-before-seen photos and previously unpublished pages from Rivera’s journal.

Universal Music Latin Entertainment to Release New Jenni Rivera Album

Jenni Rivera may be gone, but her voice lives on with new music…

The late Mexican-American singer will be heard once more on a new album, which is set to go on sale on November 17 under the title 1 Vida – 3 Historias, according to her record label Universal Music Latin Entertainment.

Jenni Rivera

The record company offered no further details about the production, but Rosie Rivera, the singer’s sister, said last October on her Instagram account that the album will feature songs recorded during a concert the late La Diva de la Banda gave in Culiacan, Mexico.

The singer died in a plane crash along with another six people in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, on Dec. 9, 2012, hours after giving her last concert in the city of Monterrey.

A year after her death, the family of the Mexican regional music artist launched 1969-Siempre, en Vivo desde Monterrey, a live recording in two parts of the singer’s repertoire during that last performance.

Both discs were hits in sales and reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart.

Rivera’s Family Launches Label Inspired by the Late Singer

The family of Jenni Rivera plans to keep the late singer’s memory alive through music…

The Rivera family has announced plans to launch a new label inspired by la Diva de la Banda, who died in a Mexican plane crash in December.

Jenni Rivera

Rivera had personally wanted to support and launch aspiring Latino singers, according to family spokesperson.

JRE/Divina Music, based in Los Angeles, was in the works in 2010 by Rivera who was already eyeing talent for the label. The label eventually signed bilingual singer Monica Padilla.

The label will also include a project by sibling Juan Rivera in addition to a Christian themed album by Rivera’s daughter Jacqie, who performed at her mother’s memorial.

The songstress’ sister Rosie Rivera, the administrator of Rivera’s estate, said in a statement that her sister “had many expectations of this project as a label… we are putting a lot of energy to complete her dreams.”

Padilla’s album, Contra la Pared, is scheduled for release later in 2013. Not only was Rivera part of the creative team that made the album a reality, she also promoted Padilla during an L.A concert.

Distribution details for JRE/Divina Music were not immediately available.

Lopez Among the Actresses in the Running to Portray Jenni Rivera

It looks like it’s a three-way race to find the actress to portray the late Jenni Rivera in a film about her life, with Jennifer Lopez in the hunt.

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican actress is reportedly being considered to play la Diva de la Banda, as well as Angélica Vale and Alicia Machado.

Jennifer Lopez

Rosie Rivera, sister of the banda/ranchera singer who died in an plane crash in Mexico last December, told Univision that plans to shoot the film about the I Love Jenni star are going forward as part of the family’s wish to make all her dreams come true.

Even though Rivera’s family hasn’t confirmed who’ll play her on screen, the press these days has tossed around a number of names, including Vale. The 37-year-old Mexican actress is best known for her starring role in the telenovela La Fea Mas Bella.

Also mentioned repeatedly is Machado, the singer and actress who was the fourth Venezuelan woman in history to win Miss Universe.

Both she and Vale have publicly expressed their admiration for Rivera, but have also said that neither has been formally offered a role in the film.

It’s also been speculated that Lopez’s company, Nuyorican Productions, could produce the film, although no news has been forthcoming about whether J.Lo intends to portray Rivera.

Lopez previously starred in the 1997 biopic about another Latina legend, the late Selena Quintanilla, who was murdered by the former president of her fan club.

For his part, film director Francisco Joel Mendoza also told Univision that he already has the permits to begin production on the film, saying shooting could begin in April.
