Noomi Rapace is joining the club

The 41-year-old half-Spanish actress has been quietly filming action film Assassin Club in Italy opposite Henry Golding, Sam Neill and Suicide Squad breakout Daniela Melchior.

Noomi Rapace

EuropaCorp veteran Camille Delamarre is directing the film, which has just wrapped shooting in Turin, Italy.

Assassin Club takes place in the world of international spies and elite assassins. In this world of contract killers, Morgan Gaines (Golding) is the best of the best. When Morgan is hired to kill six people around the world, he soon discovers all the targets are also assassins unknowingly hired to kill each other.

Rapace plays Falk, the only assassin with skills to match his own. Under the guidance of his mentor Jonathan Caldwell (Neill), Morgan must defeat Falk and the other assassins to keep himself and his girlfriend Sophie (Melchior) alive.

The project is produced and financed by Film Bridge International (FBI) with additional funding provided by 828 Media Capital.

“Assassin Club delivers the cinematic experience audiences love,” said Ellen Wander, CEO of Film Bridge International, which is repping sales.

Wander added: “Our director Camille Delamarre came to this project with an inspired vision, and we look forward to his remarkable talents in the editing room. When the film is completed, it will be a thrilling ride for audiences throughout the world.

Rapace’s previous credits include the Swedish film adaptations of the Millennium series: The Girl with the Dragon TattooThe Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.

Her other credits include Daisy Diamond, Beyond, The Monitor, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Prometheus, Dead Man Down, Child 44, and the seven lead roles in What Happened to Monday.

Jared Leto to Star in the Next Installment of Disney’s “Tron”

Jared Leto’s latest project is revving up…

The 48-year-old part-Spanish Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman will star in the next installment of Disney’s sci-fi franchise Tron.

Jared Leto

The film will be directed by Garth Davis, who directed the critically acclaimed 2016 drama Lion, which received six Oscar nominations including one for Best Picture

Jesse Wigutow wrote the most recent draft of the script. Leto is producing along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.

The original 1982 film starring Jeff Bridges was set inside the computer program called the Grid, where a computer hacker is abducted and forced to participate in gladiatorial games. The film wasn’t a hit and received mixed reviews, even though its special effects were seen as game-changing at the time. The cult following that swelled around the film in years to come as it played on cable only helped grow its popularity, to the point where Disney decided to move forward with a sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010, with Bridges reprising his role and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde joining the franchise.

That film did go on to have box office success, bringing in $400 million globally, but even so plans for a sequel were pushed while Disney figured out how to move the story forward.

The studio eventually scrapped plans for a direct sequel to Tron: Legacyand has been taking time to figure out next steps for this project.

Leto, who earned an Academy Award for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, will next be seen in Morbius and The Little Things. His previous credits include Suicide SquadBlade Runner 2049Phone Booth and Panic Room.

Penelope Cruz to Star in Juan Diego Botto-Directorial Debut Feature “On The Fringe”

Penelope Cruz is onthe fringe

The 46-year-old Oscar-winning Spanish actress will star alongside Luis Tosar in the feature film On The Fringe (En Los Margenes), which will mark the directorial debut of Argentine actor Juan Diego Botto.

Penelope Cruz

The Spanish-language film, told over the course of one day, will follow interweaving stories, including that of a woman (Cruz) who has 24 hours to prevent herself and her family being evicted from their home by a bank intent on repossessing it. Tosar will play a passionate lawyer and activist.

Cruz will produce with Alvaro Longoria of Morena Films after their recent collaboration on Asghar Farhadi’s Everybody Knows

Botto, who recently starred in the Netflix series White Lines and will next be seen in Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad, is aiming to shoot the ensemble piece in Spain later this year.

As part of their research, the filmmakers met and interviewed people who have experienced housing repossession.

Cruz said of On The Fringe: “I think Juan has written a great script and has an important story to tell. I’ve always admired his work as an actor and writer and have always known he will do great things as a director.”

Botto commented: “We wanted to reflect how an economic crisis affects personal and emotional relationships; how crises are brewing for those who live on the edge, for those who live on the fringes. We wanted to tell a story about love and solidarity.”

Longoria added: “This grabbing, emotive and optimistic thriller portrays the thousands of people who are, every day, faced with the terrible drama of losing their home.”

Pain And Glory star Cruz starred alongside Tosar in the 2015 drama Ma Ma, which was also produced by Longoria.

Warner Bros. Releases New Trailer for Rosie Perez’s “Birds of Prey”

Rosie Perezis searching for prey

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Birds of Prey starring the 55-year-old Puerto Rican actress.

Rosie Perez

The trailer opens with a comedic police station showdown, before the real fun starts…

Director Cathy Yan’s feature film debut is actually called Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and, as the title suggests, the superhero action is geared more toward Deadpool’s deadpan humor than The Dark Knightbleakness.

The spotlight is on Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), the fan-favorite Suicide Squad wild-child who teams with Renee Montoya (Perez), the Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollet-Bell). The cast also includes Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain.

The gang will clash with Ewan McGregor as the ruthless crime boss called the Black Mask.

Birds of Prey will open in theaters on February 7.

Jared Leto In Talks to Star in the Cop Thriller “Little Things”

Jared Leto is paying attention to the little things

The 47-year-old part-Spanish Oscar-winning actor and singer is in talks to join the cast of Warner Bros’ Little Things, a cop thriller starring fellow Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Rami Malek

Jared Leto

John Lee Hancockis directing his script.

Washington is playing Deke, a burned-out Kern County sheriff who teams with an LA County Sheriff’s Department detective, Baxter (Malek), to reel in a wily serial killer, the role Leto is circling. Deke’s nose for the “little things” (hence the title of the movie) proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. All the while, Deke wrestles with a dark secret from his past.

Mark Johnson is producing and the film is looking to begin production next month.

Leto won an Academy Awardfor his performance as a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club. His other film credits include Suicide SquadFight ClubRequiem for a DreamAmerican Psychoand Blade Runner 2049.

He’s also the lead singer of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Esai Morales to Star in DC’s “Titans” Series

Esai Morales has landed a Titan-ic role…

The 56-year-old Puerto Rican actor has been cast in the series Titans.

Esai Morales

He’ll portray Deathstroke, the fan-favorite assassin and archenemy of Teen Titans leader Dick Grayson.

The Titans, the first original programming franchise for the DC Universe subscription steaming site, launched in September and finished its first season in December. The weekly show follows the superhero squad that’s led by Batman’s former sidekick, Robin, aka Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), and includes the hot-tempered alien princess Starfire (Anna Diop), the mysterious empath Raven (Teagan Croft), and the green-skinned shape-shifter Beast Boy (Ryan Potter).

That Titans line-up of characters was introduced with much fanfare in the pages of DC Comicsback in 1980. The team, created by Marv Wolfmanand George Perez, didn’t have to wait long to find their signature antagonist: Deathstroke the Terminatorwas introduced in issue No. 2 of The New Teen Titans in December 1980.

The character bio from the show’s producers: “Slade Wilson is known for being DC’s deadliest assassin. While serving his country, Slade became an elite soldier before government testing enhanced his physiology to near superhuman levels, putting him on a path of darkness and revenge. To his family, Slade is a father and husband, but to the rest of the world, he is feared by many as the infamous Deathstroke; selling his services to the highest bidder as the ruthless assassin that never gives up and never misses.”

The character is well known to fans of the popular Teen Titans animated series from Cartoon Network as well as the show’s 2018 tie-in feature film Teen Titans Go! to the MoviesDeathstrokehas also been portrayed by Manu Bennett in 36 episodes of The CWseries Arrow while Joe Manganiello (True Blood) appeared as the assassin in the 2017 feature film Justice League but only with an uncredited cameo.

The DC Comics character represents an interesting footnote in Marvel Comicshistory. The character Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynoldsin the popular R-rated Foxfilm franchise, was created by Fabian Niciezaand Rob Liefeldin 1990 as a thinly disguised version of the DC villain. Not only do the characters share similar costumes, Deadpool’s alias is Wade Wilson, which in fact rhymes with Slade Wilson.

Adding a bit more confusion, both Deadpool and Deathstroke have similar attributes to Deadshot, a DC Comics villain introduced in the 1970s and portrayed by Will Smithon the big screen in Suicide Squad in 2016.

Morales, rose to acclaim in his feature film breakthrough role as Bob Morales in Taylor Hackford’s La Bamba, the landmark 1985 biopic about Ritchie Valens.

Morales’ feature film credits include Bad BoysMi FamiliaFast Food NationThe LineThe Disappearance of Garcia Lorcaand Gun Hill Road, a film he executive produced and starred in. Gun Hill Road was a grand Jury Nominee at the Sundance Film Festivalin 2011. Most recently he starred in Sony’s Superfly and the indie film The Wall of Mexico.

Morales’ recent television credits include Ozark (Netflix), Mozart In The Jungle (Amazon Prime), Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO), and Chicago PD (NBC). Morales also had notable credits over the years on shows such as NYPD Blue (ABC), Miami Vice (NBC), Fame (NBC) Law and Order: SVU (NBC), Caprica (Syfy), and Criminal Minds (CBS).

Jared Leto to Star in the Spider-Man Universe Spinoff Film “Morbius”

Jared Leto has lined up his next blockbuster…

The 46-year-old part Spanish American actor/singer is set to star in Morbius, a Spider-Man Universe spinoff based on the Marvel Comics antihero Morbius the Living Vampire.

Jared Leto

The film will be helmed by half-Chilean director Daniel Espinosa.

Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, creators of Netflix’s Lost in Space, wrote the script.

Leto, who played the iconic character The Joker in DC ComicsSuicide Squad and has been mentioned for a bunch of potential Joker-centric spinoffs, here will play Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist who in an attempt to cure a fatal blood disease injects himself with a treatment serum derived from bats. He becomes the anti-hero Morbius. He has all the qualities of a vampire, including a taste for human blood. The character originated in the ’70s Marvel Comics as a Spider-Man nemesis in The Amazing Spider-Man #101, but he evolved into his own freestanding comic hero as the decades unfolded.

Espinosa last directed the sci-fi pic Life, and before that Child 44 and Safe House.

Warner Bros. Developing Stand-Alone Joker Film Starring Jared Leto

The Joke’s not up for Jared Leto

Warner Bros. is apparently in early development on a Joker and stand-alone film in the Suicide Squad universe starring the 46-year-old part-Spanish American Oscar-winning actor, according to Deadline.com.

Jared Leto

Letowill also reportedly executive produce the film.

No writer or director are assigned at this time.

Meanwhile, Suicide Squad is going into production some time next year.

Jared Leto In Talks to Star in Sony’s “Bloodshot”

Jared Leto could be seeing the world through bloodshot eyes…

The 45-year-old part-Spanish American actor, singer-songwriter and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman is in talks to star in Sony’s Bloodshot, based on indie comic book publisher Valiant Entertainment’s IP.

Jared Leto

The project is being directed by Dave Wilson, who is partnered with Deadpool director Tim Miller’s at Blur Studios.

If a deal can be reached, Leto would star as Bloodshot’s protagonist Angelo Mortalli, a ruthless killer for the mob who is set up by the family and framed for murder. He instead goes into Witness Protection, but is betrayed by an FBI agent guarding him, kidnapped and forcibly subjected to an experimental program in which his body is injected with microscopic computers called nanites. They erase his brain and rebuild it and his body to be a weapon with superhuman strength and healing powers.

The character was created by Kevin Van Hook, Don Perlin and Bob Layton in 1992.

Sequels are planned for both Harbinger and Bloodshot before the title characters meet in Harbinger Wars, which is based on Valiant’s 2013 comic book crossover.

Leto previously starred as The Joker in Suicide Squad.

Rodriguez Earns MTV Movie & TV Awards Nomination

Gina Rodriguez wants her MTV

The 32-year-old Puerto Rican actress has earned a nomination for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the renamed MTV Movie Awards. The inaugural telecast — hosted by actor and comedian Adam Devine — will air live on Sunday, May 7.

Gina Rodriguez

Rodriguez is nominated in the Best Actor in a Show for her starring role on The CW’s Jane the Virgin, which earned her a Golden Globe back in 2015.

Meanwhile, Jared Leto has earned a nomination in the Best Villain category for his performance as The Joker in Suicide Squad.

Different from the original awards show, the new format will now include separate categories for TV in addition to film. Another rule change sees actors in both mediums competing against one another for the same awards. The network has also broken down the gender wall with exclusively non-gendered categories — meaning Emma Watson will go up against Hugh Jackman for top performance honors.

Five new categories make this year’s telecast, as MTV hopes to highlight cultural relevancy in today’s society. Aside from the explanatory categories Best Host, Best Reality Competition, and Tearjerker, there will also be awards for Best American Story (awarded to the show or film that shows America at its best, open and diverse) and Best Fight Against the System (formerly known as Best Fight — awarded to the film or show whose characters best exemplify fighting against a system that tries to keep them down).
