Alfonso Cuarón is Releasing a 70mm Film Version of “Roma” in Select Theaters

The 57-year-old Mexican filmmaker’s critically acclaimed period piece Roma, announced of part of the short for the Oscar Best Foreign Language Film category, is getting a 70mm film release in select theaters.

The film, which has been touted as an Oscar Best Picturefrontrunner since its debut at the Venice Film Festival, was released for a limited theatrical run on November 21 and is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Cuarón portrays an intimate examination of his memories from his childhood in Mexico City. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, the Oscar-winning helmer paints an emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst the political turmoil of the 1970s.

Cuarón shot the film on the Alexa65digital camera, mastering at 4K resolution. FotoKem, the only remaining 70mm print lab worldwide, handled the transfer from digital to film, as well as the production of 70mm film prints.
