Ana de la Reguera to Star in Latest “Purge” Horror Thriller

Ana de la Reguera is ready to purge

The 42-year-old Mexican actress has been cast as the lead in the latest Purge horror thriller from Blumhouse ProductionsPlatinum Dunes and Universal Pictures.

The companies are forging ahead with a new chapter in the hit film series after the strong performance of last year’s installment, The First Purge. That film became the highest-grossing release to date in the series, which is set in a near-future America where on one day a year all crime, including murder, is legal.

The movies have made more than $450 million worldwide on a combined budget of around $35 million and also spawned a television series that recently wrapped its second season on USA Network.

James DeMonaco, who originated the franchise and wrote and directed the first three chapters, penned the script for the as-yet-untitled effort.

Details about the upcoming thriller are being kept in the vault, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that it does take Purgeout of its usual metropolitan setting while still dealing with class and race issues in the way the previous films have.

Everardo Gout, who helmed the majority of the Nat Geo series Mars, as well as episodes of Luke Cage and The Terror,will direct.

Universal has set a July 10, 2020, release date for the film, which is set to begin shooting next month.

The Purgeget continues an upward swing for de la Reguera, who just wrapped playing the female lead opposite Dave Bautista in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. The actress is currently a lead on the Billy Bob Thornton series Goliath, which recently began airing its third season on Amazon, and is working on Ana, an autobiographical series that she created and will star in and executive produce for Amazon Latin AmericaComedy Central Latin America and Patayain the U.S.
