Antonio Banderasis celebrating a special first…

Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards have been revealed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with the 59-year-old Spanish actor earning his first nod.

Banderas is nominated in the Best Actor category for his acclaimed performance in Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory. 

“I was surprised” Banderas said, not only because he hadn’t really been campaigning due to the opening of his new theater, Teatro del Soho Caixabank, in his native Malaga, but also because this was a Spanish-speaking role.

Pedro Almodovar, a two-time Oscar winner, is in the running again… 

The 70-year-old Spanish filmmaker earned a nod in the International Feature category for Pain and Glory. He previously won in the category for All About My Mother. Almodovar also won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplayfor writing Talk to Her.

The 54-year-oldMexican cinematographer, previously nominated for his work on Brokeback Mountain and Silence, picked up the third nod of his career in the Best Cinematography category for his work on Martin Scorsese’s epic crime taleThe Irishman.

The Spanish animator and screenwriter has earned his first Academy Awards nomination in the Best Animated Feature category for his directing Netflix’s Klaus.

“To be honest, as a director, I lose perspective. I have no clue how good or bad my film is, so I have to depend on other people’s reactions to know what we did,” he said of his nomination. “So, to see the recognition like this—and not just for Klaus, but for other outliers—is an incredibly rewarding thing.”

Pablo Helman, Leandro Estebecorena and Nelson Sepulveda-Fauserearned a nod in the Best Visual Effects category for their work on The Irishman, while Adam Valdez picked up a nod in the same category for his work on The Lion King.

Petra Costa has earned a nod in the Documentary Feature category for The Edge of Democracy.

With the nominee announcement completed, final Academy voting begins on January 30 and wraps at 5:00 pm PT on February 4. Winners to be announced on February 9 at the 92nd Academy Awards live on ABC from the Dolby Theater at Hollywood & Highland.
