Ganem to Participate in Roselyn Sanchez’s PetSOS Charity Race

Edy Ganem is about to race for a cause…

The half-Mexican actress, who stars as Valentina Diaz on Lifetime’s Devious Maids, will compete alongside her co-stars on Saturday in a charity race to benefit the PetSOS organization, which is working to upgrade an animal shelter in Puerto Rico.

Edy Ganem

In a press conference this week, Devious Maids star Roselyn Sanchez said that Ganem, Judy Reyes and Rebecca Wisocky would take part in the invitation-only Amazing Paw Paw Race in the U.S. commonwealth.

Other artists slated to participate included singer-songwriter Jencarlos Canela, singer Ana Isabelle, television host Jaime Mayol, actor Julian Gil and his girlfriend, Colombian actress Viviana Serna.

Sanchez said the event was “really significant” because of its potential to help the Puerto Rican government improve the situation of stray dogs on the island.

She called on Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla’s administration to include the effort to rescue these animals among its other top priorities like combating crime and unemployment and improving public health.

Sanchez said the number of stray dogs in Puerto Rico has tripled over the past decade to 300,000 and she called on the island’s authorities to open more shelters to house these canines.

Referring to the race, she said the different team members must be “very athletic” because they will have to navigate an obstacle course spanning six different municipalities.

The funds raised for PetSOS also will be used to organize a large-scale spay and neuter drive on the island aimed at sterilizing hundreds of dogs and cats belonging to needy families.

De Moura to Appear Naked in New PETA Campaign

Adriana De Moura is preparing for an oh-so-revealing PETA campaign…

The Brazilian Real Housewives of Miami star, who got married in May, will go naked for an upcoming PETA campaign, according to E! News.

Adriana De Moura

De Moura is reportedly going to ditch her clothes and pose in a bathtub for an ad that will raise awareness about the cruel practice of keeping sea mammals for entertainment purpose.

De Moura’s ad will ask the question, “Could you live in a tub for 40 years?” It will be focused on the story of a lone Orca called Lolita. Killer whales travel in groups in the ocean, but the mammal is imprisoned in a small tank at the Miami Seaquarium. Lolita has been there since it was caught in 1970.

De Moura hopes that appearing in the ad will bring about change. She’s passionate about the issue because her native Brazil has banned the cruel practice along with a few other countries. De Moura and other activists are urging Miami Seaquarium to send Lolita to Puget Sound.

Salgado’s R.Evolucion Latina Sponsoring Free Summer Camps in New York City

Luis Salgado is giving low-income Latino children in New York a chance to sing and dance…

The Latino choreographer, the founder of R.Evolucion Latina, has launched a free summer camp for more than 200 Latino children from low-income homes, where they will take acting, voice, music and dance classes under Salgado’s direction.

R.Evolucion Latina Camp

For five days, the children — ages 7 to 17 – will take part in the project sponsored by R.Evolucion Latina, which for six years has been organizing the camp to inspire the Latino community to discover its best potential through the performing arts.

“What we really want is for the children to find themselves, to click on their awareness as human beings and to begin to take note that they have value and the strength to achieve the things they want,” said Salgado in an interview with Efe.

Through having fun through art, Salgado wants to break the “I can’t” or “Don’t do that” barriers that, in his opinion, currently limit the Latino community.

“We want to push an internal revolution that says ‘dare to go beyond,’” added the choreographer, who last year made a name for himself on Broadway by directing the musical Amigo duende.

Salgado’s dream is for R.Evolucion Latina to fight so that “everyone has an equal chance” and so that Latino kids have the opportunity “to shine as human beings.”

Carey Performs Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert in NYC’s Central Park

Mariah Carey sings for a good cause…

The 43-year-old half-Venezuelan singer performed for a large crowd in New York City’s Central Park this past weekend to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Mariah Carey

Despite doctor’s orders to rest after dislocating her shoulder several days earlier while shooting a music video, Carey entertained a crowd of more than 50,000 on Central Park’s Great Lawn.

Carey took the stage in a form-fitting white dress with her injured arm in a sling – draped in a matching white fur Gucci stole – to sing one of her greatest hits, “My All.”

The “#Beautiful” singer  – who was accompanied by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the benefit concert, which was organized by Major League Baseball, or MLB

said it was an honor to be there with the New York Philharmonic before this “incredible” audience in order to help the people who were affected by the natural disaster.

“I love you madly, I love you madly,” she told the crowd, and said she was going to sing before it started to rain.

On the night of October 29, Hurricane Sandy and its winds that registered over 120 kph (75 mph) left a trail of death and destruction through New York with fatalities and thousands of homes destroyed or badly damaged, especially on Staten Island and the Rockaways.

Martin Speaks Out Against Child Exploitation in Puerto Rico

Ricky Martin is taking a stand against child exploitation on Puerto Rico…

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican singer this week expressed his concern over the increase in child exploitation on the Caribbean island. And, he’s calling for continued public debate over human trafficking.

Ricky Martin

“We have to continue attending to this evil on all possible fronts,” said Martin in a statement. “I’m concerned by the increase in this crime on our island. The initiatives have to come from all sectors, public prevention policies and laws that protect children and teenagers have to be created.”

Martin took advantage of the statement, which was released by the Ricky Martin Foundation, to announce that the organization is supporting the second part of the study entitled “Human Trafficking in Puerto Rico: A Challenge to Invisibility,” headed by the island’s former education secretary, Cesar Rey.

Martin and the directors of his foundation are closely following the construction of a center for victims of human trafficking and child exploitation in Loiza, a town on the northern coast of Puerto Rico.

The center should be inaugurated during the first quarter of 2014 and is being backed by institutions with experience in prevention and education in Puerto Rico.

The Ricky Martin Foundation defends children’s rights around the world in the areas of education, health care and social justice.

Its main program, “People for Children,” combats the exploitation of children and young people resulting from human trafficking.

Coixet Raising Awareness About Lack of Women Filmmakers with Special Video Message

Isabel Coixet is doing her part to raise awareness about the lack of women behind the lens.

The 53-year-old award-winning Spanish filmmaker is among the women filmmakers who’ve posted a 60-second video clip explaining why they make movies as part of the European Women’s Audiovisual Network’s effort to build awareness of the lack of female directors.

Isabel Coixet

The campaign features a stylish video message on its website from Coixet, who attributes her interest in visual media dating back to her childhood.

“I guess I am a filmmaker because I am hopelessly romantic…because my parents took me to the cinema twice a week, sometimes even three times a week,” Coixet says as family home video footage unspools to a background soundtrack of an old 35 mm cinema projector running.

“I’m a filmmaker because I am a dreamer…because films are the stuff that dreams of made of,” she continues.

The clip – and others from members of the Spanish government and European film funds’ backed network, which launched in February during the Berlinale and had a number of events during the Cannes Film Festival, can be found at the EWA website.

Francine Raveney, the network’s Strasbourg-based British-born executive director, said the key aim of the campaign was to “promote women filmmakers having a voice.”

The not-for-profit network, which is open to membership from both women and men, has won the backing of directors who include Oscar winner (The Piano, 1994), Jane Campion.

EWA hopes the clips will help raise awareness of the dominance of men in European and world cinema.

“In Europe only one in every 10 box office hits is directed by a women,” Raveney told The Hollywood Reporter. “And this is in a continent where half the students at film school are women.”

The network is hoping to help women directors with a development prize in association with Torino Film Lab, chosen for its “excellent reputation in Europe and because scripts are sometimes seen as a weakness and they specialize in ensuring scripts are well written,” Raveney added.

The network is still looking to raise funds from sponsors to help ensure its long-term survival, Raveney added.
