Gina Rodriguez to Direct an Episode of The CW’s “Charmed” Reboot

Gina Rodriguez is heading behind the lens…

The 34-year-old Puerto Rican actress and Jane the Virgin star will direct the 11th episode of the CW’s Charmed reboot, according to Variety.

Gina Rodriguez

“I’m very excited about that opportunity and obviously very excited that I get to do it with three Latinas,” Rodriguez said. “It’s really f—ing awesome. It’s going to be really exciting to see what that journey is.”

Rodriguez made her directorial debut on her CW series last season, with the 10th episode of its fourth season. At the time, she told Variety that some of her influences in stepping behind the camera were past Jane the Virgindirectors Brad Silberling and Melanie Mayron.

“Brad Silberling is very poetic with the camera — the way he sets up blocking and the way he tells a story is very poetic, where it’s a reflection of the script and it’s telling a story inside of the story. Melanie Mayron sets up really stunning shots — whether it’s a really big wide where you have somebody running through the scene or it’s inserts of a hand moving a chair, or it’s a cut between a look and a look,” she said.

Charmed, which comes from Jane the Virginshowrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, marks the first project Rodriguez will direct that she is not also starring in.

The new version of Charmed isbased on a story by Urman, with Jane the Virginwriters Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin writing and executive producing. Silberling, Ben Silverman and Carter Covington also executive produce. CBS Television Studios produce in association with Propagate Content.

The show stars Melonie Diaz, Madeleine Mantock and Sarah Jeffery as the sisters who discover they are witches in the pilot episode.

Rodriguez will also be back in the director’s seat on “Jane” for the fifth and final season premiere episode. She is also developing a few projects with the network.

MTV Bringing Back Its Hit Reality Series “The Hills” with Frankie Delgado Among Returning Cast

Frankie Delgado is heading back to the hills…

The Hills, the popular MTV reality series that ran on the network for six seasons in the late 2000s, is making a comeback.

Frankie Delgado

MTV announced The Hills: New Beginnings which will reunite original cast members, including the 37-year-old Mexican American actor and producer, alongside their children and friends, and follow their personal and professional lives while living in Los Angeles.

With new faces in the picture and returning favorites, The Hills will be back for a new beginning with a 2019 premiere.

Along with Delgado, members of the original series and Laguna Beach — Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt, Audrina Patridge, Jason WahlerStephanie Pratt and Justin Bobby — were in attendance at the VMAs.

Hints of a revival had been in the air for a while. The network aired the Orange County, CA-based series, a spinoff of its reality series Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, from 2006 to its series finale in July 2010.

Lauren Conrad hosted a The Hillsreunion special in 2016 but it’s unclear whether she will be part of the revival. Kristin Cavallari among other cast members including the now-married Montag and Pratt have said they’d be in for a new incarnation of the series.

MTV has certainly seen success with its reality series revivals (in the U.S. and abroad), most recently its Jersey Shore spinoff, which was cable’s top-rated series in adults 18-34 for Season 1 and returns for Season 2 on Thursday. Its offshoot Floribama Shore returned for Season 2 in July and scored a series-high with nearly 1 million total viewers, up 34% over its Season 1 average.

The Hills: New Beginnings is produced by MTV and Evolution Media.

Anuel AA’s Debut Album “Real Hasta La Muerte” Certified Gold by the RIAA…

Anuel AA is golden…

The 25-year-old Puerto Rican trap artist’s Real Hasta La Muerte has been certified gold by the RIAA only three weeks after its release.

Anuel AA

“At the moment I have no words to say thank you for the support I have received from my fans,” said Anuel in a press statement. “I thank God more than anything for the blessing of so much good news in such a short time.” Anuel calls the album “my return to music, and I am back to stay.”

Back in July, Anuel AA earned his first No. 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart with his debut album, Real Hasta La Muerte.

The chart-topping album arrived on July 17 via Real Hasta La Muerte/ GLAD Empire— hours before he was released from prison after serving time for gun possession charges.

Real Hasta La Muerte opened in the penthouse with 11,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 19, according to Nielsen Music. Of its starting sum, 3,000 were in traditional album sales — a notable feat, since it only had two days of sales during the tracking week. It scored the fifth largest sales week for a Latin album in 2018, trailing only the debuts of CNCO’s self-titled album (13,000; chart dated April 21), J Balvin’s Vibras (10,000; chart dated June 9), Maluma’s F.A.M.E. (7,000; chart dated June 2), and Victor Manuelle’s 25/7 (4,000; chart dated Apr. 7).

Real Hasta La Muerte also debuted at No. 1 on the Latin Albums Sales chart.

The set, which was recorded while Anuel AA was serving his sentence, also logged 7,000 in streaming equivalent units (SEA).

Further, Anuel was the first artist to land at the summit with a debut album in a little less than a year. Ozuna bowed at No. 1 with his debut set, Odisea (Sept. 16, 2017). Real bumps Odisea down to No. 2, after 42 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1. (He continues to hold the record for the most weeks atop the list for a male artist, and the third overall; Gloria Estefan’s Mi Tierra leads with 58 weeks and Selena’s Dreaming of You follows with 44.)

Chucho Valdés to Pay Homage to His Late Father Bebo Valdés at the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival

Chucho Valdés is preparing to honor his late father…

Renowned Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés would’ve turned 100 this coming October. His son, Chucho, of Irakere fame, and Diego El Cigala, the flamenco singer with whom Bebo recorded the remarkable 2003 album Lagrimas Negras, are among the artists who will pay homage to one of Cuba’s most celebrated musicians at this fall’s Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival.

Chucho Valdés

Cigala will honor both Bebo’s centennial and the 15th anniversary of the Grammy-winning album, performing the evergreen boleros and Cuban classics he piercingly inflected with Spanish song on the recording, on which he was accompanied by Bebo’s timeless stylings. The album by the unexpected pair — which reached no. 4 on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart — vaulted Cigala to international stages, and was the centerpiece of Bebo’s fabulous late career comeback. He was 84 years old when Lagrimas Negras was released. Bebo died in 2013.

At the just-announced concert on November 14 at Barcelona’s Palau de la Música, Cigala will perform with Jaime Calabuch, known as Jumituson piano. Cigala and Jumitus have also been announced for U.S. concerts at the Fillmore Miami Beach (November 9), and at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex in Los Angeles (March 2019).

Chucho Valdés, who was named the Barcelona Festival’s “godfather” in 2014, will open the festival October 26 with music from his 1972 vanguard Cuban jazz album, Jazz Batá, which was influenced by Bebo’s earlier experiments with the sacred Afro-Cuban batá drums. In 1952 in Havana, Bebo premiered his new rhythm called batangá, featuring the batá, which at that time had yet to make the jump from their hallowed place in religious ceremonies to popular music stages. The combination of ritual rhythms and Cuban orchestral arrangements was before its time.

Chucho will perform with a group of next-generation musicians: Yaroldi Abreu y Dreiser Durruthy Bambolé and Yelsy Heredia, whose playing carries on the innovation characterized by both Chucho and Bebo throughout their careers.

Chucho and his band will also perform Jazz Batá in other European cities this fall, and on a jazz cruise from Ft. Lauderdale scheduled for January 2019.

Bassist Javier Colina, who recorded a live album with Bebo at New York’s Village Vanguard in 2005, and Cuban pianist Harold Lopez Nussa, are also part of the jazz festival’s Bebo Valdés tribute, which is a piece of the extensive program of the festival’s 50th anniversary edition. Flamenco guitarist Tomatito, Brazil’s Tribalistas, bassist Avishai Cohen, Malian music duo Amadou & Mariam, jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux, the John Scofield Combo, the Bad Plus and Grupo Compay Segundo are among artists on the event’s October-December concert schedule.
