Lopez to Co-Host “The X Factor” with Khloe Kardashian

Extra, ExtraMario Lopez will be having an X-ceptional fall…

The 38-year-old Mexican American actor has reportedly signed on the dotted line to co-host Fox’s The X Factor alongside Khloe Kardashian, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Mario Lopez

A source close to the show says that Lopez has officially signed on, while Kardashian’s reps and the X Factor team have agreed on all points of her contract, and paperwork should be signed shortly.

The Extra host and E! reality TV star replace The X Factor’s season one host Steve Jones, who was cut  in a massive talent slash that also found judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger without jobs in late January.

Following the firings, Simon Cowell repeatedly stated that he hoped to hire two judges for the forthcoming season, one female and one male.

Kardashian had long been rumored to fill the position. Her friendship with new X Factor judge Demi Lovato helped seal her deal, a source said.

Meanwhile, Lopez’s name only recently entered the fray. Other potential hosts said to have been on the shortlist included Corbin Bleu, Kevin Jonas and Kevin McHale.

Kardashian and Lopez screen-tested separately. It’s unclear whether they’ve been on camera together yet.

A representative for Fox had no comment.

The X Factor returned with its season two premiere on Wednesday, September 12, with new judges Britney Spears and Lovato joining Cowell and L.A. Reid on the panel.

Kardashian and Lopez are expected to appear when the live shows begin later this fall.

Fernández to Perform Final Concerts This December

It’s the end of the road for Vicente Fernández

The 72-year-old legendary Mexican singer, known as El rey de la canción ranchera, has announced that he’ll step out of the spotlight following two concerts on December 14-15 in the western state of Jalisco.

Vicente Fernandez

“I want to go back home to say my goodbyes,” said the Grammy-winning singer on Friday before the second of three shows at the Festival of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco where he was born.

Fernández, considered mariachi music’s all-time great, announced early this year that he was planning to retire from the concert stage to spend more time with his family. He mentioned that he also wanted to step down while he was at the top of his game.

He admitted to some health problems from an inflamed liver and said his decision to retire is “definitive,” though he did add that he will continue to record discs.

The singer who made famous such tracks as “Mujeres Divinas” and “Las Llaves de Mi Alma” will bid farewell with a special tour through Spain, Central America, South America and the United States, before wrapping up his farewell tour in the land of his birth.

In a career stretching more than 50 years, the “Charro of Huentitan” recorded more than 90 albums and won numerous Billboard, Grammy and Diosa de Plata awards.

Espinosa Urging Mexico’s Lawmakers to Fight Childhood Obesity

Paola Espinosa is encouraging Mexico’s leaders to dive into the issue of the country’s obesity epidemic…

The 26-year-old Mexican diver, who earned a silver medal in synchronized diving at the 2012 London Games, is urging her country’s lawmakers to do more to ensure Mexico no longer leads the world in childhood obesity.
Paola Espinosa
“Pass laws that promote programs so we’re no longer No. 1 in childhood obesity,” Espinosa said this week in a ceremony at the lower house of Congress to honor Mexico’s medalists at the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2012 Paralympics.

Obesity currently affects 29 percent of Mexican boys and girls between the ages of five and 11, 30 percent of children aged 12-19 and seven of 10 adults, according to the Health Secretariat.

Also attending the ceremony were divers Iván García, Germán Sánchez and Laura Sánchez and archer Aida Roman, as well as 10 Paralympics’ athletes.

Espinosa and her diving partner Alejandra Orozco won a silver medal in the synchronized 10m platform at the London Games.

Cruz In Negotiations to Star in “Gucci”

She’s donned Gucci on the red carpet, but Penelope Cruz may soon be appearing on the big screen in a film about the Italian family behind the legendary clothing brand.

The 38-year-old Spanish actress and 2013’s Campari calender girl is currently in talks to star in Gucci, according to The Wrap.

Penelope Cruz

Directed by Ridley Scott’s daughter Jordan Scott, the film tells the story of the late Maurizio Gucci, grandson of Gucci’s founder, as he becomes heir to the family empire.

Gucci was shot to death in 1995. His ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was jailed for the killing in 1999.

The project, first announced in 2006, originally had Ridley Scott attached to direct from a script by Andrea Berloff. Several other writers have since been involved in the project.

Angelina Jolie was approached in 2009 to play Reggiani, who was jailed for 29 years for allegedly ordering the killing of her ex-husband, when Ridley was still attached to direct.

Reports of the film’s resurfacing came as Gucci makes a push to re-establish the brand as synonymous with Hollywood glamour, which it has been struggling to do since Tom Ford left the house in 2004.

The company has become increasingly involved in the film world. Gucci has given more than $2 million to Martin Scorsese to help him restore old films, including Federico Fellini‘s La Dolce Vita and Sergio Leone‘s Once Upon a Time in America.

The label also funds film scholarships and supports a weekly film series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Hayek Executive-Producing “The Cisco Kid” Reboot for CBS

Salma Hayek is looking to bring an iconic Latino character back to television…

CBS has put in development The Cisco Kid – a reimagining of the half-hour Western television series starring Duncan Renaldo in the title role – with the 46-year-old Mexican actress, director and producer and X-Men’s Lauren Shuler Donner executive producing the project.

Salma Hayek

The Cisco Kid, written by Diego Gutierrez, is being hailed as a modern day retelling of the classic story of a handsome outlaw and his faithful sidekick similar to Lethal Weapon. It follows Cisco as he returns to Los Angeles after serving several tours as a Marine in Afghanistan.

After witnessing the murder of his father, Cisco and his best friend/fellow Marine, Sam, team up to solve the case and subsequently find themselves doing what the authorities can’t — defending the city’s oppressed and disenfranchised.

The Cisco Kid

First introduced in O. Henry’s 1907 short story The Caballero’s Way, the Cisco Kid became a fixture of 20th century pop culture — a rare achievement for a Latino character. The character went on to headline more than a dozen movies, beginning with the 1914 silent film The Caballero’s Way and most recently a 1994 TV movie starring Jimmy Smits as Cisco and Cheech Marin as his sidekick Pancho. The role won an Academy Award for Warner Baxter, who played Cisco in several movies. The Cisco character also spawned radio shows, comic books as well as an oft-covered song by War. On television, The Cisco Kid syndicated series starring Renaldo ran from 1950-56.

In its quest to create Latino-themed projects, CBS – the network behind the drama series Cane and comedy Rob, decided to place its bets on this fourth high-profile reboot at the network this season. CBS also has reboots of Beverly Hills Cop from Shawn Ryan and Eddie Murphy, the Vince Vaughn-produced The Brady Bunch, and Have Gun, Will Travel from David Mamet.

Hayek’s production company Ventanarosa co-produced the ABC dramedy Ugly Betty as part of its goal to develop, produce and acquire mainstream projects that either draw on Latin themes or feature Latin talent, both in front of and behind the camera. In features, the company has produced films like Frida. In addition, she’s developing The Prophet, an animated adaptation of Kahlil Gibran’s book, which has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.
