Demi Lovato Makes Emotional Return to the Music Scene with Grammys Performance of New Single “Anyone”

Demi Lovato‘s back, and she’s bringing the house (and the tears) down…

In the 27-year-old half-Mexican American singer/actress’ gave her first live performance in two years at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, debuting her new, highly personal single “Anyone.”

Lovato, who was so overcome with emotion that she had to restart the performance a second time, took the stage in a dramatic white gown, and backed only by piano to sing the song’s somber, pain-filled lyrics.

“I feel stupid when I sing / Nobody’s listening,” she sang, with tears running down her face.

Lovato has said that she recorded “Anyone,” four days before her near-fatal overdose in July 2018. And it’s easy to believe someone near rock bottom penned those lyrics.

“I tried to talk to my piano, I tried to talk to my guitar,” she begins. “Talked to my imagination / Confided into alcohol / I tried and tried and tried some more / Told secrets ’til my voice was sore.” She goes on, singing that she felt dumb for praying, that her wishes upon shooting stars were for naught, that even with “a hundred million stories / and a hundred million songs / I feel stupid when I sing / Nobody’s listening to me.”

Lovato’s emotional performance earned rave reviews from her peers online…

“Oh Demi Lovato, you just tore me down,” wrote P!nk. “I’m so glad you’re here to sing those words, to sing like that.”

“I am in tears. That is singing. That is heart and that is truth,” said Sam Smith in his Instagram Story.

Lovato’s longtime friend Selena Gomezposted a pic of the performance and wrote, “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was. Demi I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”
