Juanes Launches World Peace Campaign

Colombian rockero and human rights activist Juanes is commemorating this International Day of Peace (September 21) by releasing a video aimed at promoting harmony around the world.

Entitled “Peace is a Human Right,” the new campaign – revealed at the United Nations offices in Geneva, Switzerland – features artists, musicians and actors speaking out in support of peace. Participants include “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria, Puerto Rican singing sensation Ricky Martin, Mexican singer Paulina Rubio, Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal and Spanish musician Miguel Bosé, who joined the 39-year-old Juanes at today’s launch.

During the press conference, Juanes explained that the video was created to plead for people around the world to support the cause “for the wonderful idea of peace. This is the time to connect and to join forces.”

The campaign includes a Paz Sin Fronteras (Peace Without Borders) website where supporters can sign an online petition to ask the United Nations to end the culture of violence and make peace a human right.

Multiple versions of the video will be posted on Paz Sin Fronteras’ website with English, Spanish and French subtitles.

The International Day of Peace was originally established in 1981 by the United Nations. In 2001, 192 member states of the UN unanimously adopted the day as a way to “invite all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities during the day, and to otherwise commemorate the day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.”
