Mariah Carey Delays Debut Album Anniversary Celebration in Light of Fight to End Racial Injustice

Mariah Carey‘s putting a milestone celebration on pause…

The 50-year-old half-Venezuelan American Grammy-winning singer’s self-titled debut album turned 30 on Friday, June 12.

But Carey announced that she’s putting off the celebration in light of the nationwide fight for racial justice.

“Thank you lambily, for all the celebratory messages for today’s #MC30 anniversary!” Mimi wrote on Instagram over an image of the 1990 album’s classic cover art. “I had planned to share some surprises and rarities with you, but prefer to postpone them to a later date.”

Carey then turned her attention to the more serious social issues at hand, writing, “As we continue to fight for equality and justice within our broken systems, I thank you for using your platforms to educate, inform and invoke change. Together let’s bring on a change. Love, Mariah.”

Carey hasn’t been shy about using her own platform to speak out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, either. In recent weeks, the singer has shared an impromptu performance of Mariah Careyalbum cut “There’s Got to Be a Way” in honor of George Floyd, as well as a tribute to Breonna Taylor on what would have been her 27th birthday.

She also posted a snippet of 2009’s “Languishing (the Interlude)” and its eerily prescient message (“I was wondering/ Would you cry for me?/ If I told you that I couldn’t breathe/ If I was drowning, suffocating/ If I told you that I couldn’t breathe?”) on the day of Floyd’s memorial service.

Carey’s debut album, released on June 12, 1990,topped the Billboard 200 album chart for 11 consecutive weeks. And Mariah Carey was certified nine-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting shipments of nine million copies in the United States.

The album features four Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles: “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Someday” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry.”

Carey was named Best New Artist and won the Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for “Vision of Love” gramophone at the Grammys in 1991 on the success of her debut album.
