Bella Thorne to Star in Steven Soderbergh & Eddie Alcazar’s Indie Film “Divinity”

It’s to Divinity and beyond for Bella Thorne

The 24-year-old half-Cuban American actress/singer has been cast in the indie film Divinity.Bella ThorneThorne is among the final cast members to be announced for the film, alongside Scott Bakula.

The project is the latest collaboration between Steven Soderbergh and Eddie Alcazar. Cypress Hills’ DJ Muggs will serve as musical composer.

Chris Santos, Danielia Maximillian, Lydia Bielen, and Emily Willis round out the cast.

Previously announced actors leading the project include Stephen Dorff, Jason Genao, Moises Arias, Karrueche Tran, and Mike O’Hearn.

Divinity follows otherworldly brothers (Genao & Arias) that are hellbent on stopping a mogul (Dorff) who is close to unraveling the secrets behind immortality.

The film includes elements of Alcazar’s “Metascope” technique which combines stop motion animation and live-action sequences. The technique was featured in his short film The Vandal, a collaboration with Darren Aronofsky, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021.

Divinity is targeting completion ahead of the film festival circuit.

Alcazar previously worked with his mentor Soderbergh on his feature debut Perfect, released in 2018, a sci-fi thriller starring Abbie Cornish, Rainey Qualley, Courtney Eaton, and Tao Okamoto.

Laz Alonso to Star in the Psychological Thriller “Detained”

The 47-year-old Cuban American actor will star opposite Abbie Cornish in the psychological thriller Detained.

The project will be helmed by director Felipe Mucci and counts Justin H. Min, John Patrick Amedori, Silas Weir Mitchell, Moon Bloodgood, Josefine Lindegaard and Breeda Wool amongst its supporting cast.

The film follows a woman (Cornish) who wakes up in a police interrogation room with no memory of the night prior. The accusations against her may have life-altering implications. However, in this isolated police station, something is not quite right.

Mucci wrote the script with Jeremy Palmer.

Alonso is an NAACP Image Award winner best known for his series regular role as the superhuman Mother’s Milk in Amazon’s acclaimed comic book series, The Boys.

The actor has also recurred in series including L.A.’s Finest and Southland, finding guest starring roles in Power Book II: GhostThe Bobby Brown StoryPerson of Interest and more.

Barbara De Regil to Star in the Action-Thriller “Blackout”

The 33-year-old Mexican actress has been cast in the action-thriller Blackout, starring Josh DuhamelAbbie CornishNick Nolte and Omar Chaparro.

Also joining are Jose Sefami and Hernan Del Riego. Shooting on the film is underway in Mexico City.

Blackout will follow Cain (Duhamel), who wakes up in a Mexican hospital with no memory. After meeting Anna (Cornish), he discovers who he is but soon finds himself fighting for his life as several warring cartel factions attack him, each looking for something he has stolen. Cain looks towards co-worker and mentor, DEA Agent McCoy (Nolte), for answers.

The Patriot Pictures (Synchronic) feature is being directed by Sam Macaroni, director of the VR fight sequences on John Wick: Chapter 3 – ParabellumThe script comes from Van B. Nguyen. XYZ will launch world sales at the upcoming American Film Market.

De Regil is best known for her starring role in the La Femme Nikita-inspired action-crime-thriller TV series Rosario Tijeras from Sony Pictures Television and TV Azteca.

She has also starred in lead roles in films like the comedy feature Loca Por El Trabajo, opposite Adriana Barraza, and, most recently, Netflix’s Spanish-language comedy feature, Mutiny of the Worker Bees, opposite Gustavo Egelhaaf and Mexican star Alejandro Suárez.

 

Omar Chaparro to Star Opposite Josh Duhamel in the Action Film “Blackout”

The 45-year-old Mexican actor/comedian will star in the action movie Blackout, which is scheduled to get underway this week in Mexico City.

Chaparro will star opposite Josh Duhamel, Abbie Cornish and three-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte in the film.

Eddie Alcazar’s “Perfect” to Have Its World Premiere at This Year’s SXSW Festival

The world premiere of the Latino director’s sci-fi thriller Perfect, executive produced bySteven Soderbergh, is set for the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSW).

In Perfect, a boy in a cold and stark modern house in a vaguely science fiction world is seduced by advertisements of perfection to install implantable characteristics directly into his body. The implants heal his dark, twisted visions, but come with a corporeal cost. He persists on applying them, hoping to reach perfection, but ultimately discovers that purity of mind is not exactly as he’s imagined.

The film is produced by Alcazar and Javier Lovato for Brainfeeder Films, with Garrett Wareing, Courtney Eaton, Tao Okamoto with Maurice Compte and Abbie Cornish.

Alcazar previously directed Tapia for HBO, and FUCKKKYOUUUa Sundance selected short scored by Flying Lotus, which also did the music for Perfect.  

Garcia in Talks to Star in the Sci-Fi Adventure Film “Geostorm”

It may be the calm before the (geo)storm for Andy García.

The 58-year-old Cuban actor is in talks to join Gerard Butler in the sci-fi adventure feature Geostorm, which will be directed by Dean Devlin.

The film centers on a stubborn but charming satellite designer (portrayed by Butler) who, when the world’s climate-controlling satellites malfunction, has to work together with his estranged brother to save the world from a man-made storm of epic proportions. As the designer heads into space, the brother discovers a plot to assassinate the president.

Garcia is in negotiations to take the Oval Office as the president in Geostorm.

Other actors in talks to join the film include Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish and Ed Harris.

Warner Bros. and Skydance are behind the film, which is eyeing an October shoot in New Orleans.

The script was originally written by Devlin and was also worked on by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.

Garcia is currently appearing in theaters in 20th Century Fox’s Let’s Be Cops.

The official trailer for José Padilha‘s highly anticipated RoboCop remake has been released…

The clip for the 46-year-old Brazilian director’s reinvention of Paul Verhoeven‘s 1987 cult sci-fi film begins with: “When crime is out of control, the only solution isn’t human.”

Starring The Killing‘s Joel Kinnaman in the role originally made famous by Peter Weller, the film centers on police officer Alex Murphy, who suffers fourth degree burns and the loss of a leg when his car blows up.

Murphy recovers to find himself trapped inside a robo-suit, designed by scientists Dr. Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) and Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton). It’s hoped that this part-man, part-robot police officer will fight crime in Detroit but, as we all know very well, things do not always work out as planned.

RoboCop also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish and Jay Baruchel.

With an estimated budget of $120 million, the new trailer showcases a number of epic special effects as well as plenty of new gadgetry.

 

The film from MGMColumbia Pictures opens in theaters on February 7.

Moura to Star in “Fellini Black And White”

Wagner Moura is preparing to portray one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century…

The 36-year-old Brazilian actor, a well-established and acclaimed actor in his native country, has signed on to play Federico Fellini in Fellini Black And White.

Directed by Henry Bromell, the film centers on Betty, the beautiful veterinarian that Fellini falls in love with when he comes to Los Angeles in 1957 to attend the Academy Awards and picks up the Best Picture for Nights Of Cabiria.

Abbie Cornish has been cast as Betty. The film also stars William H. Macy, Terrence Howard, Peter Dinklage and Nina Arianda, who will play Italian film star Giulietta Masina, Fellini’s wife.

Moura achieved widespread international fame for his portrayal of Captain (later Colonel) Roberto Nascimento, protagonist of the highly successful 2007 motion picture The Elite Squad and the film’s sequel, The Elite Squad 2.

Besides his acting career, Moura is also a lyricist and the vocalist of the band Sua Mãe.
