Helena Bonham Carter Starring in the Period Drama “The Offing”

Helena Bonham Carter is off(ing) to her next project…

The 56-year-old part-Spanish British actress, a two time Oscar nominee, will star in the period drama The Offing, which Beta Cinema will launch sales on at next week’s EFM.

Helena Bonham-CarterBonham Carter is reteaming with The Crown director Jessica Hobbs on the project.

Hobbs, an Emmy winner who is currently directing HBO drama The Palace with Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant, has directed the second-most episodes of Netflix’s smash series The Crown, including multiple episodes with Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.

Their new collaboration is an adaptation of Benjamin Myers’ well-received novel set in post war northern England. The film charts the intense and uplifting relationship between a teenage boy and a hard drinking, foul-mouthed, bohemian recluse called Dulcie (Bonham Carter).

Casting is underway for the 16 year-old Robert, a shy, nature-loving son of a miner who sets out to see a little more of the world before he follows his father down the pit. Under Dulcie’s eccentric tutelage, his life opens up to food, girls, and the transformative beauty of poetry. Over time he discovers that her idyllic home is hiding a tragic secret about Dulcie’s great love and the two go on a journey which will open Dulcie’s own heart and re-engage her with the world.

The film is being produced by Charlotte Walls and Emily Barttelot for Catalyst Global Media, which developed the film with support from Beta. Amy Roberts is adapting the screenplay and Bonham Carter is also aboard as an executive producer. Shooting is being lined up for later this year.

The Offing presents the notion that being introduced to the right person can transform your life forever,” says Bonham Carter. “Dulcie teaches Robert how to live – everyone needs a Dulcie Piper in their life! And Robert, after uncovering Dulcie’s secret, leads her to peace. From the beginning I wanted Jessica Hobbs on board. She is so brilliant with character and rigorous about being authentic with following the psychological and emotional story. If we can succeed in capturing an iota of Benjamin Myers’ novel the film will be beautiful and a life enhancer. In Jessica’s hands I have little doubt we will.”

Jessica Hobbs commented: “When I first read the book, Helena Bonham Carter was immediately vividly present as Dulcie. She is so unapologetically, joyously, who she is, as is Dulcie. What the film ultimately delivers is a deep and timely meditation on the power of friendship, of creativity, of healing in the most unexpected of ways. I am excited to have the chance to work closely with Helena again since we were last together on The Crown. She is a spectacular actress and a director’s dream.“

Tassilo Hallbauer, Beta Cinema’s Head of Sales & Acquisitions, added: “We immediately felt very strongly about this very modern, warm-hearted and funny take on a period drama. The characters, the language, the unapologetic nature of our heroine, make this film vastly contemporary and relevant. The Offing is incredibly charming, extremely entertaining and truly uplifting – exactly what audiences around the world want to see right now.”

The King’s Speech and Alice In Wonderland star Bonham Carter is currently on screens as the lead role in Nolly, the new UK series from Doctor Who showrunner and It’s A Sin creator Russel T Davies.

Benjamin Myers’ novel The Gallows Pole won the Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction and is being adapted as a six-part TV series co-produced by the BBC and A24, directed by Shane Meadows.

Natalia Castells-Esquivel Developing Dramedy “Women’s Studies” for HBO Max

It’s Studies time for Natalia Castells-Esquivel.

HBO Max is developing the one-hour dramedy Women’s Studies from the Mexican television writer and project co-creator Dani Chase.

Natalia Castells-Esquivel.

Described as “Dear White People meets The L World sprinkled with some Broad City humor,” the series follows Adriana, a Mexican-American student, who starts her first day at a women’s college in Atlanta filled with “queer AF, feminist women” — but it doesn’t seem like Adriana’s scene considering she is superficial and a little ignorant. But like Alice in Wonderland, her ideas and values are challenged the second she steps on campus.

The pilot is loosely based on Castells-Esquivel’s experience at a women’s college in Atlanta.

The series explores the loss of innocence and self-actualization as the audience watches a campus of young women evolve, embracing the new, dispensing with the old, and figuring out how to topple the heteronormative patriarchy in the process.

Castells-Esquivel recently worked as story editor for Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She previously worked on HBO Max’s Generation and Netflix’s Ingobernable.

Netflix had no comment.

Carter would take over the role played in the first two seasons by Vanessa Kirby.

The second season premiered December 8 on Netflix. In it, Margaret married Antony Armstrong-Jones, the Earl of Snowdon (Matthew Goode) and the season ended with her pregnant with one of their children.

The Crown, created by Peter Morgan, tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign as the fragile social order established after World War II breaks apart.

It was announced earlier that Olivia Colman would be replacing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth in the upcoming third and fourth seasons, which have not yet been ordered but are expected. Morgan previously said he intended to replace key cast members in later seasons, to better portray the characters as they aged.

Carter, star of Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Fleet Street and Alice in Wonderland among others, will next be seen in Warner Bros.’ Ocean’s 8, the female-driven caper spinoff directed by Gary Ross. She’s also the voice of Margaret Conroy in Fun Academy Motion Pictures’ first animated family film Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero.

Trailer Released for Bonham Carter’s “Alice Through The Looking Glass”

Helena Bonham Carter is a glass act…

The first full trailer for Alice Through The Looking Glass – the sequel to Disney’s 2010 blockbuster Alice In Wonderland – has been released, featuring the 49-year-old part-Spanish actress reprising her role as Iracebeth of Crims, the Red Queen.

Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen

For the original film, Bonham Carter’s head was digitally increased to three times its original size on screen.

Along with Bonham Carter, Alice Through The Looking Glass returns most of the cast — among them Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and the voices of Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman and Michael Sheen — and screenwriter Linda Wolverton but not original director Tim Burton (he’s a producer on this one, with Muppets helmer James Bobin taking over).

Among the newcomers is Sacha Baron Cohen, who portrays a major cog in this new story based on Lewis Carroll’s original: he plays Time, who is part-human, part-clock (and has borrowed some outfits from Brüno’s closet apparently). When Alice returns to a much different Wonderland, she must go on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the Grand Clock’s chamber. This sends her into the past, where she comes across friends and enemies at different points in their lives, and a race to save Depp’s Hatter (looking quite put out here) before time runs out.

The 3D pic has a May 27, 2016 release date.
