Daddy Yankee’s “Con Calma,” Featuring Snow, Surpasses Two Billion Views on YouTube

Daddy Yankee is back in the double-billion club…

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican rapper/singer and Snow’s collaboration “Con Calma” has reached a new milestone, surpassing over two billion video views on YouTube.

Daddy Yankee

This marks Daddy Yankee’s second video and Snow’s first visual to reach the remarkable number.

“Con Calma” also becomes Daddy Yankee’s seventh video as lead, featured artist or collaborator to form part of YouTube’s Billion Views Club.

“To transcend different cultures singing in my language and representing it has been a core mission since the beginning of my career,” Daddy Yankee expressed on Instagram. “There is no greater satisfaction than to continue building my legacy and continue to be relevant in the music industry.”

The global hit, which is an energetic, bilingual remake of Snow’s 1992 hit “Informer,” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart dated May 4, 2019, where it reigned for 14 consecutive weeks.

In addition, YouTube highlights that Daddy Yankee is the most-subscribed Latin artist on the platform with 30.6 million subscribers at the time of publishing.

“Huge congrats, Boss! It’s amazing to see you rompiendola on YouTube with ‘Con Calma’ hitting 2 Billion views and being the most subscribed Latin artist on our platform,” said Sandra Jimenez, head of Music Partnerships in Latin America at YouTube, in a press statement. “Your success on YouTube is a testament to your incredible musical talent, high engagement with fans, and YouTube’s unique ability to connect music artists with fans globally.”

Daddy Yankee and Snow reached this new achievement over a year after “Con Calma” entered YouTube’s Billion Views Club in June 2019.

AQUIHAYAQUIHAY Signs with Steve Aoki’s New Latinx-Focused Imprint Dim Mak En Fuego

Things may never be the same for AQUIHAYAQUIHAY

The Mexican anti-boy band has signed with Steve Aoki’s new Latinx-focused imprint Dim Mak En Fuego and launches its first single, “Ya No Es Igual.”

AQUIHAYAQUIHAY

The multi-faceted producer, who has collaborated with a slew of Latin artists — including Daddy Yankee, Maluma and Maná– launched the label to help nurture and develop Latinx artists “driven from the underground scene,” according to Aoki. The move was born from the bond he’s had with his global Latin fanbase.

“We’ve been planning this for quite some time now. These things take time to build and it all started when I started doing more of the Latin collaborations — it was then that I started planting the seeds,” Aoki tells Billboard. “I’ve gotten so much support from my Latin fanbase and I’ve built a bond with them and its culture. Their acceptance has not only helped me collaborate with Latin artists, but it’s also now allowed me to be part of the development and nurturing of Latin artists too.”

Aoki launched his own record label, Dim Mak, 24 years ago.

Dedicated to releasing hybrid sounds from the global underground alongside contemporary hitmakers, Dim Mak En Fuego’s team includes Bryan Linares (head of marketing) and Christian Herrerra (co-founder of Gasolina Party). Distribution partners include Merlin, A2IM and FUGA.

Their first and only signed artist (so far) is Mexican self-described anti-boy band AQUIHAYAQUIHAY, who launch the label with the release of their pop-tinged R&B track “Ya No Es Igual.”

“The idea of launching with AQUIHAYAQUIHAY really cements where we want Dim Mak En Fuego to land,” says Linares. “We could’ve come out with a straight reggaeton record but coming out with them feels very authentic to us because we come from the underground.”

“They are amazing young kids who are doing something different,” says Aoki of the group. “When we heard the music and saw what they’re doing and their drive I thought, ‘that’s it.’ This is the kind of feeling we need when we sign an artist. I’m excited about watching what they can do.”

Nicky Jam Releases New Single “Desahogo,” Featuring Carla Morrison

Nicky Jam has found a little relief

The 39-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American reggaeton singer/songwriter has released the surprise freestyle single “Desahogo,” featuring Carla Morrison.

Nicky Jam

To the beat of Morrison’s 2013 single “Disfruto,” Nicky Jam opens up about his life struggles, insecurities, and challenging road to success.

“God gave me another opportunity/ I lifted my head and don’t plan on lowering it,” he chants, also mentioning Colombia, where he previously lived, and where he revived his music career.

Throughout the lyrics, Nicky Jam sings about important life lessons like materialistic things not fulfilling him on a sentimental level, and how he was his own enemy. He also thanks reggaeton veterans Daddy Yankee and El Ñejo for being true brothers who stood by his side.

Morrison’s enthralling chorus kicks off the track and shines again toward the ending: “Me complace amarte / Disfruto acariciarte y ponerte a dormir / Es escalofriante / Tenerte de frente / Hacerte sonreír.”

“I hope this passes to get ready for another concert in el Choli next year,” he says in reference to the current health crisis. “I continue being the same but with more zeroes / I continue being the same but more sincere.”

An animated music video, directed by Marlon Villar, shows a cartoon version of Nicky Jam telling his story on the streets. The clip landed at No. 8 on YouTube’s trending page at the time of publishing.

Wisin Launches Own Record Label, La Base Music

Wisin is set to help new Latin artists…

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton rapper, singer and record producer, one half of the Wisin & Yandel, has launched his own record label, La Base Music, in an effort to support up-and-coming Latin talent.

Wisin

Wisin says he was inspired to become a resource for young talent and help foster their careers following his stints as a coach on reality television shows La Voz and La Banda.

“There is so much talent out on the streets and there are artists who don’t have the tools to achieve great things or don’t have any direction in their career,” says Wisin. “It was just a matter of time for me to do something like this and I have been working on creating a top-level studio that can compete with any other studio around the world.”

Headquartered in Wisin’s native Puerto Rico, La Base Music launches with new signees Chris Andrew and Abdiel Larralde, who will soon release new music under the label.

“Our new artists have potential and the hunger to grow,” adds Wisin. “That’s the most important thing for us here at La Base. Attitude is everything. I’m looking for people who want to grow but also listen. We are here with the intention of making good music. And it’s not just new artists we are collaborating with. We actually just finished Ozuna‘salbum at La Base and we’re almost done with Wisin & Yandel’sforthcoming album.”

La Base Music’s resident engineer and award-winning producers include Hyde Quimico and Los Legendarios who have worked with Latin superstars like Daddy Yankee, Ozuna and Reik.

Although La Base Music will be distributed by The Orchard via WK RecordsWalter Kolm‘s recently-launched imprint (Kolm’s WK Entertainment manages Wisin), all artistic decisions will be taken independently.

“All the decisions and everything that has to do with our artists, I will be in charge of that,” Wisin explains.

Wisin says he doesn’t take this new venture lightly as it comes with great responsibility. “I’m grateful that life has given me the opportunity to become a resource for artists who maybe in three or four years will be great musicians. It’s very fulfilling and it makes me proud that I can still contribute to music in that way.

Daddy Yankee’s Sech Collaboration “Definitivamente” Reaches No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

Daddy Yankee is back at the top of the charts…

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican rapper’s collaboration with SechDefinitivamente” has reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart dated May 30, the song vaulted from 4-1 after its previous No. 2 peak (on the May 16-dated list).

Daddy Yankee & Sech

Daddy Yankee and Sech’s first collaboration ascends to the top despite a 3% dip in audience impressions (to 9.71 million) earned in the week ending May 24, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

“Working with Sech was very spontaneous,” says Daddy Yankee. “The creative process of the song was very much organic. As we met in the studio and listened to the intro of the song, the vibe we both felt made the song extra special.”

The track, released by El Cartel Records on January 31, has exceeded 200 million impressions to date.
