The decision was made after testing actresses this week.

The studio was already extremely interested in the rising Afro-Latina star following her breakout role in In the Heights, and sources say her audition sealed the deal as the choice.

The studio had no comment.

The film will bow on HBO Max, marking one of the first major DC properties to debut exclusively on the streamer. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct the film from a script by Christina Hodson.

While plot details are under wraps, it is known that Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, will be the character behind the cape in this version. Gordon is the most established version of the Batgirl character and was first introduced in 1961 as Betty Kane.

Grace was among a final group of actresses being tested for the role that included Isabella MercedZoey Deutch and Haley Lu Richardson.

Sasha Calle: The First Latina Supergirl in DC Universe

Sasha Calle is making superhero history…

The 25-year-old Colombian American actress has landed the feature role of DC Universe’s new Supergirl.

Sasha Calle

Calle, chosen from more than 425 actresses who auditioned, is the first Latina Supergirl ever in DC history.

She will make her debut in Warner Bros’ The Flash.

Andy Muschietti, The Flash director, watched all the auditions and, along with DC Films boss Walter Hamada and producers, was reportedly blown away by the toughness and vulnerability Calle brought to the role.

“The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role,” said Muschietti.

The actresses weren’t informed what part they were reading for until late in the process. Calle also did a chemistry read with Flash star Ezra Miller. All auditions, chem reads and meetings, especially during COVID-19, were done over Zoom.

Calle plays the role of Lola Rosales on The Young and the RestlessShe was nominated last year in the Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama Series at the Daytime Emmys. She also starred in the YouTube miniseries Socially Awkward.

In the DC media canon, Supergirl was first played by Helen Slater in the 1984 Warner Bros movie and later by Melissa Benoist on the Warner Bros television series for 126 episodes.

Muschietti revealed the news to Calle during a Zoom call, see her reaction below:
