Roberta Colindrez to Star in Amazon’s Film “Cassandro,” About The Liberace of Lucha Libre

Roberta Colindrez is preparing for the Lucha of her life…

The 35-year-old Mexican actress will star opposite Gael Garcia Bernal in his Amazon film about “The Liberace of Lucha Libre”, Cassandro.

Colindrez will play best friends with Bernal’s Saúl Armendáriz as she finds community in the Lucha Libre world training young fighters.

The film, produced by Ted Hope and Todd Black, is shooting in Mexico City.

Cassandro, directed by Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams, tells the true story of Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rises to international stardom after he creates the “exotico” character Cassandro, the “Liberace of Lucha Libre,” and in the process upends not just the macho wrestling world but also his own life.

Armendáriz at the age of 15 quit school and began training for Lucha Libre, beginning his professional wrestling career in 1988 under the mask as Mister Romano. Ultimately he would abandon the character and take on the exotico character of Baby Sharon. Exoticos are male wrestlers who dress in drag.

Colindrez is best known for her work in the Tony award winning musical Fun Home as well as her stand-out roles in Amazon’s I Love Dick, FX’s Mrs. America, Starz’s Vida, and HBO’s The Deuce.

Colindrez will next star in the Amazon series, A League of Their Own.

Roberta Colindrez is celebrating an Amazon project…

The streaming service has released the teaser trailer for I Love Dick, featuring the Mexican actress.

After a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the latest Amazon series from the Transparent creator Jill Soloway launches on May 12 – and, as the trailer reveals, there’s a slew of sex, feminist art criticism, Lone State lust, and a lot of obsession

Described as a “soapy delicious psycho-sexual comedy set in an art town” by Soloway, I Love Dick is based on the 1997 novel by Chris Kraus.

In addition to Colindrez, who portrays Devon, the series also stars Kathryn Hahn, Kevin Bacon, India Menuez, Sebastian Cole and Lilly Mojekwu.

Colindrez, who stars in the Broadway musical Fun Home, has previously appeared on television in Girls, Boardwalk Empire and Gotham.

Leguizamo Receives Lucille Lortel Award Nomination for His “Latin History for Morons” Play

John Leguizamo is reaping the critical acclaim for his return to the theater…

The 52-year-old Colombian American actor, stand-up comedian and playwright – who has earned Drama Desk Awards for his plays Ghetto Klown and Freak, along with other theater prizes – has earned a nomination at this year’s Lucille Lortel Awards, which salute commercial and nonprofit off-Broadway productions.

Leguizamo, who earned a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor back in 1993 for his one-man play Spic-O-Rama, is nominated in the Outstanding Solo Show category for his Latin History for Morons, which he wrote and stars in. It was produced by The Public Theater in a co-production with Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Joel Perez earned a nomination in the Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical category for his performance in Sweet Charity, the New Group revival starring Sutton Foster.

The Latino actor’s theater work includes Fun Home (Broadway and The Public Theater), as well as national and international tours of In the Heights and Fame.

María Irene Fornés, a multiple Obie Award winner, has received a nomination in the Outstanding Revival category.

The 86-year-old Cuban-American avant garde playwright and director is nominated for penning Drowning, one of the three plays that make up the Signature Theatre-produced Signature Plays: Edward Albee’s The Sandbox, María Irene Fornés’ Drowning, and Adrienne Kennedy’s Funnyhouse of a Negro.

Montana Blanco picked up a nod in the Outstanding Costume Design category for his work on The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World AKA the Negro Book of the Dead.

The awards will be presented on May 7 at an event hosted by ex-SNL company member Taran Killam to benefit The Actors Fund.

Roberta Colindrez has found a new Love…

The Mexican actress has joined the cast of Jill Soloway’s Amazon comedy pilot I Love Dick.

Written by playwright Sarah Gubbins and based on Chris Kraus’ influential and somewhat controversial 1997 novel, I Love Dick is set in a colorful academic community in Marfa, Texas.

It centers on a struggling married couple, Chris and Sylvere, and their mutual obsession with Dick, an off-putting but charismatic professor.

Told in Rashomon-style shifts of POV, I Love Dick charts the unraveling of a marriage, the awakening of an artist and the reluctant deification of a man named Dick.

Colindrez will play Devon, a butch cowboy and amateur playwright who works as a groundskeeper on the property Chris and Sylvere are renting in Marfa. She’s instantly drawn to Chris, but she’s waiting for the couple to come to some sort of agreement before she makes her move.

Colindrez, who had a recurring role on HBO’s Girls, currently stars in the Tony-winning Broadway musical Fun Home. Her other credits include appearances on Boardwalk Empire and Gotham.

She’ll next be seen in the upcoming season of USA’s Mr. Robot.

Isaac to Star in Theatre for a New Audience’s Production of “Hamlet”

Oscar Isaac is about to Ham(let) it up…

The 37-year-old Guatemalan and Cuban American actor will play William Shakespeare’s melancholy Prince of Denmark in a new production of Hamlet for the Brooklyn-based company Theatre for a New Audience. It’s more than a year off, but the play, to be staged by Sam Gold, will certainly be a big draw for artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz’s celebrated and increasingly ambitious company, which presents in its sleek new headquarters, the Polonsky Shakespeare Center.

Hamlet is slated to begin previews June 4, 2017 for an opening June 22 and run through July 30. The pairing of star (Star Wars: The Force Awakens; A Most Violent Year; Inside Llewyn Davis) director (Tony Award winner for staging the Tony Winning best musical Fun Home) should continue TFNA’s upward profile — and demonstrate that the prospect of a Tony nomination isn’t the only reason marquee actors are drawn to the stage or even to Brooklyn

Isaac and Gold previously worked together on Zoe Kazan’s We Live Here, in 2011.

Hamlet is their first Shakespeare collaboration and their first production with TFNA.

“Oscar is celebrated for the honesty, authenticity, and intensity of his performances,” Horowitz said in announcing the production Sunday afternoon, “and Hamlet marks his long-desired return to theater after an impressive series of starring film and television roles. Sam is renowned for the transparent subtlety and nuance of the theatrical worlds he creates. Together [they] will explore the ‘undiscovered country’ of Hamlet’s world which begins, of course, with the first words of the play, ‘Who’s there?’”

Casting and other creative decisions will be announced later.

Leguizamo to Star in the One-Man Show “Latin History for Dummies”

John Leguizamo is ready to play teacher…

The 51-year-old Colombian actor plans to give audiences a special educational lesson with his latest one-man show Latin History for Dummies.

The Public Theater – an off-Broadway production company in New York City known for hits like Hamilton, Fun Home and Eclipsed – will showcase Leguizamo’s latest comedic creation during its spring 2017 season.

Leguizamo, a Golden Globe, Drama Desk and Emmy nominee, had a string of New York City stage hits in the 1990s with Mambo Mouth, Spic-o-Rama and Freak, and he has been inspired to create and star in his the next show after noticing a lack of representation for Latinos in the American historical narrative.

“Just imagine you’re a white kid, and all of a sudden everybody’s Latin, and everything they’re teaching you is Latin, and you don’t hear anything about yourself or about your contributions,” Leguizamo said in a statement. “And it’s really weird and unfair because we had huge contributions.”

The show takes place under the guise of a satirical history lesson aimed at Leguizamo’s son and will explore Latin historical themes dating back thousands of years, as well how Spanish-speaking immigrants helped to shape the most powerful nation in the world.

The project will be co-produced by Berkeley Repertory Theatre and directed by Berkeley Rep’s Tony Taccone.

No official date has been set for the show’s premiere.

Rivera Wins Drama League Award for Her Performance in “The Visit”

Chita Rivera is this year’s Drama League darling…

The 82-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress, dancer and singer, the first Hispanic woman and the first Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honors award, picked up the Distinguished Performance Award at the 2015 Drama League Awards for her role in The Visit.

Rivera was named the winner during the Drama League’s annual luncheon ceremony May 15. The Broadway favorite and current Tony Awards nominee, beat out the likes of Helen Mirren, Bradley Cooper and Jake Gyllenhaal, among many others.

American in Paris bested its Tony Awards competition Fun Home, Something Rotten! and The Visit, along with a number of Off Broadway titles, in the new musical category, while Curious Incident came out on top in a race for the new play trophy that included fellow Tony nominees Hand to God and Wolf Hall.
