Shakira Performs Surprise Concert For 40,000 Fans in New York City’s Times Square

The 47-year-old Colombian superstar surprised her followers with a “pop-up” concert in New York City’s Times Square to celebrate her first LP in seven years, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, which was released last Friday.

ShakiraAnnounced just hours earlier on her social media accounts, Shakira’s impromptu concert drew about 40,000 fans, according to figures provided by the organizers.

A huge electronic billboard that covered part of a skyscraper announced the free show with a clock counting down to its start.

At around 7:30 p.m. ET, the crowd enthusiastically chanted from ten to zero and two large doors hidden in the jumbotron opened to reveal the TSX Stage, and Shakira opening with her No. 1 Hot 100 hit “Hips Don’t Lie.”

Hola New York! Oh my God, this is amazing, absolutely insane,” she said immediately after in Spanglish. “It’s so awesome to see you again, to sing for you… Nothing compares to this. Thank you so much for all the love that you’ve been giving me this week during the release of my new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. And thank you, thank you, thank you for showing up.”

Dressed in black pants and top with silver embellishments, the self-proclaimed She-Wolf delighted the crowd by singing live — along with a band and a group of dancers — songs such as “Te Felicito”, “TQG”, “Cómo Dónde y Cuándo” and “Puntería”, before closing with the mega hit “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”

“I’m happy to be here surrounded by my Latin people,” said the 14-time Latin Grammy and three-time Grammy winner. “Thank you New York. Until next time. I love you very much.”

Shakira to Release Fuerza Regida-Collab Track “El Jefe” This Week

The 46-year-old Colombian superstar will release a new song in collaboration with Regional Mexican group Fuerza Regida.

ShakiraShakira took to social media to announce “El Jefe,” which is set for release on Wednesday, September 20. When talking about her upcoming new track during an interview with ET, Shakira didn’t reveal much and only teased, “I’m not the boss in this song, but wait and see.”

Then, she posted a snippet of “El Jefe,” Shakira’s first foray into Regional Mexican music, that’s about someone who has the mentality of a millionaire but doesn’t actually have money.

“You’re dreaming of leaving the barrio, you have everything it takes to be a millionaire, expensive taste, the mentality, you’re just missing a salary,” she sings over a fast-paced beat.

Shakira’s collab with Fuerza Regida is a reflection of Regional Mexican music’s dominance and influence on Latin music today. With acts like Fuerza at the forefront, the genre is having a record year growing in popularity in the United States and beyond. In May, Billboard reported that Regional Mexican music consumption in the U.S. jumped 42.1% year to date through May 25, outpacing gains in the Latin genre overall, as well as country, dance/electronic, rock and pop, according to Luminate.

The new song announcement arrives just days after Shakira’s show-stopping performance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, where she sang a medley of her hits, including “She Wolf,” “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Objection” and newer hits such as “Te Felicito” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”

The singer-songwriter also made history at the VMAs, becoming the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award. She is the second Latin artist to receive the award; Jennifer Lopez, the first performer of Latin descent, received the honor in 2018.

The 46-year-old Colombian superstar singer-songwriter will receive the Video Vanguard Award at MTV‘s 2023 Video Music Awards on September 12, becoming the first South American artist to earn the award.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is a four-time VMA winner and 30-time nominee.

She won her first VMA — the award for International Viewer’s Choice — Latin America (North) — in 2000 for “Ojos Así.” She snagged the same award in 2002 for “Whenever, Wherever/Suerte” and also scooped up the trophy for Best Choreography in a Video for 2006’s “Hips Don’t Lie” as well as Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration for 2007’s “Beautiful Liar” with Beyoncé.

Shakira has also earned three Grammys and 12 Latin Grammys in her career.

The Video Vanguard Award, named after Michael Jackson, went to Nicki Minaj last year. Previous winners include Beyoncé, Jennifer LopezKanye WestDavid BowieMadonna and RihannaThe Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester won the award at the first VMAs in 1984.

Shakira is nominated for four VMAs this year: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Latin for “TQG” with Karol G, and Best Latin for “Acróstico.”

Earlier this year, her hit collaboration with Bizarrap, “Music Sessions Vol. 53,” set a number of streaming records on Spotify and YouTube.

Shakira first performed at the VMAs in 2002 with her rendition of “Objection (Tango),” and was the first artist to perform a song entirely in Spanish at the ceremony alongside Alejandro Sanz when they sang “La Tortura” in 2005.

Taylor Swift leads this year’s VMA nominations with eight, while SZA comes in second with six nominations. Nicki Minaj, Doja CatMiley CyrusSam SmithOlivia Rodrigo and Kim Petras each have five nominations, and Blackpink and Diddy tie Shakira’s four. Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin, and Stray Kids are confirmed to perform at the ceremony, with MTV announcing more performers soon.

The 50-year-old Puerto Rican superstar and the 43-year-old Colombian superstar have seen a major uptick in streaming activity following their Super Bowl LIVhalftime show, according to initial reports to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

In total, J.Loand Shaki’s song catalogs earned 31.1 million on-demand streams (audio and video combined) on February 2 and February 3 — up 193% compared to their streaming sum on January 31 and February 1 (10.6 million).

Individually, Lopez’s songs tallied 10.1 million streams on February 2-3, up 149% versus the 4.06 million they collected on January 31 and  February 1.

Shakira’s songs earned 20.98 million clicks on February 2 and February 3, up 221% as compared to the 6.53 million they earned on January 31 and February 1.

As for the songs performed during the halftime show, includingthose by guest performers Bad Bunny(“I Like It”) and J Balvin(“Que Calor,” “Mi Gente”), the songs performed in the halftime show snared 24.85 million on-demand streams on February 2 and February 3, up 157% compared to the 9.66 million they registered on January 31 and February 1.

The most streamed song after the halftime show… Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie,” which captured 3.16 million streams on those two days combined — up 194% compared to the 1.07 million it earned the two days before the Super Bowl.

The 50-year-old Puerto Rican multi-hyphenate and the 43-year-old Colombian superstar’s high-energy team-up for the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show on Sunday, February 2 resulted in immediate sales gains for both.

According to initial reports to Nielsen Music, the collection of songs performed during the halftime show (which aired live on Fox TVin the U.S.) garnered a 1,013% sales increase in the U.S. on the day of the big game. In total, the tunes sold 16,000 digital downloads on Sunday, up from a little more than 1,000 sold on Saturday, February 1.

The biggest selling song among those performed was Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever,” which sold nearly 4,000 on February 2, snaring a 1,194% increase compared to the negligible figure it posted the day before. The second-largest selling halftime tune was another Shakira track, “Hips Don’t Lie,” moving 2,000 downloads (up 1,126% from a negligible sum the day before).

The halftime show was led by a multi-song medley from Shakira, with special guest Bad Bunny, which then transitioned to a medley by Lopez, with an appearance by J Balvin. After Lopez’s set, she was joined by Shakira to close the show with a two-song medley of Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud” (plus a snippet of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.”) and Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).”

News on streaming gains gleaned from the halftime show are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Shakira kicked things off with her hit “She Wolf,” then seamlessly transitioned into her track “Empire,” where she showcased her ability to shred on the guitar.

After a brief dance interlude, Shakira — who rocked a sparkly red two-piece — broke into “Whenever, Wherever” and a cover of Cardi B’s “I Like It,” with an assist from Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer Bad Bunny, who appears on the original singer.

Shaki, who celebrated her 43rd birthday on Super Bowl Sunday, then showed off her dancing skills once again before singing “Hips Don’t Lie,” during which she crowd-surfed atop a group of enthusiastic fans.

Then, Lopez took over the program, taking the stage atop a skyscraper-like pole for a high-energy performance of “Jenny from the Block” and “Ain’t It Funny,” and then transitioned into “Get Right.”

After shedding her studded black leather bodysuit for a sparkly silver one, Lopez showed off her Hustlersmoves own on a stripper pole, while singing “Waiting for Tonight.”

J.Lo was then joined by J. Balvin, who assisted her on “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.”

Lopez continued to flaunt her moves to “Mi Gente” before moving on to a high-octane version of “On the Floor.”

The performance then transformed into a family affair as Lopez brought out her 11-year-old daughter Emme, who hit the stage singing a slowed-down rendition of “Let’s Get Loud” — with Shakira on drums — before her mom came back out wearing a large jacket made of feathers that featured the American flag on one side and the Puerto Rican flag on the other. It was a show of support to the territory, which has been affected by natural disasters in recent years, including Hurricane Maria and a recent damaging earthquake.

Emme briefly sang Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” while the set design featured glowing cages housing child performers, a marked gesture of solidarity toward the Latin community and those impacted by anti-immigration policies.

Then Shakira joined Lopez to sing “Let’s Get Loud” together.

The duo then moved on to Shakira’s hit “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” before switching back to “Let’s Get Loud,” at which point they closed out their set with impressive synchronized shimmiesas fireworks went off behind them, before wrapping their historic performance with a hug.

Shakira to Appear on Apple Music’s “Carpool Karaoke: The Series”

The 40-year-old Colombian superstar serves as Trevor Noah’s tour guide in her adopted hometown of Barcelona in a new episode of Apple Music‘s Carpool Karaoke: The Series premiering Tuesday (September 12).

Remarking on Barcelona’s beauty, Noah sports a red and yellow scarf, boasting the colors of the Catalan flag.

The car cruises to Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia cathedral, the city’s biggest tourist attraction, where Shakira immediately causes selfie madness, while Noah makes jokes about the fact that no one seems to recognize him in the least.

A teaser for the episode promises a joyful, and well-timed, homage to Barcelona and its street life.

The episode airs almost a month after the August 17 terrorist attack in the city center that killed 14 people.

Shakira’s “Chantaje,” feat. Maluma, Matches the Run of “Hips Don’t Lie” on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs Chart

The 39-year-old Colombian superstar rules the roost on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart (dated January 21) for an eighth (nonconsecutive) week with “Chantaje,” featuring Maluma, matching the amount of weeks she spent atop the chart with her 2006 smash “Hips Don’t Lie,” featuring Wyclef Jean.

Both tracks are now tied for her second-longest command of the chart; the Colombian star’s “La Tortura,” featuring Alejandro Sanz, spent 25 weeks at the top beginning in June 2005.

Meanwhile, “Chantaje,” which translates to blackmail in English, jumps 65-51 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, reaching a new peak in its eighth charting week. Apart from “Tortura,” which peaked at No. 23, “Chantaje” marks Shakira’s best Hot 100 showing for a Spanish-language song that doesn’t have an accompanying English version.

A gain in streaming for the song supports its rank on both charts. The track logged 6.1 million streams during the week ending January 5, according to Nielsen Music, an 18 percent increase. It concurrently debuts at No. 47 on the Streaming Songs chart, which ranks weekly U.S. streaming data across all genres, marking Shakira’s fourth time on the four-year-old chart, and the first with a Spanish-language song.

Of the song’s total domestic weekly streams, 62 percent stem from YouTube, where its official video has reached 395 million global views to date. Meanwhile, “Chantaje” spends a fourth week at No. 1 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart, despite a 4 percent dip in sales (to 5,000 downloads; most titles dropped in sales in the tracking week, following Christmas-week shopping the week before).

For nine years (2005-14), “La Tortura” held the record for the most weeks at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs. It wasn’t until Enrique Iglesias‘ global hit “Bailando,” featuring Descemer Bueno and Gente de Zona, ran up 41 frames at No. 1 (through February 2015), dethroning “Hips Don’t Lie.” Since then, Nicky Jam and Iglesias also surpassed the reign of “Hips,” when their collaborative “El Perdon” tallied 30 weeks at No. 1 in March-October 2015.

Shakira is currently working on her 11th studio album, her first full-length Spanish release since 2010’s Sale el Sol.

In the commercial, the “La Tortura” singer belly dances alone on an oceanside dock, smiling and beckoning to viewers while her song “Addicted to You” plays.

Dance is manufactured and marketed by the Spanish fashion and fragrance giant Puig. The company’s Shakira line also features five other fragrances designed to capture Shakira’s different moods, including one called Rock!, and Wild Elixir, billed as “the scent of adventure.”
