The 49-year-old Mexican actress and telenovela star has signed with Buchwald.

del Castillo stars in Telemundo’s hit drama La Reina del Sur.

One of the highest rated Spanish-language series in the world, La Reina del Sur adapts the bestseller by Spanish novelist Arturo Perez-Reverte. In the crime drama, which recently wrapped filming for Season 3, del Castillo plays Teresa Mendonza, a woman from Mexico who becomes the most powerful drug trafficker in southern Spain.

Castillo recently completed a two-series deal with Telemundo. Her production company, Cholawood, has a first-look development deal with Boomdog, the Mexico City-based division of Endemol Shine North America.

The actress starred opposite Will Smith as the villain in Sony’s Bad Boys for Life, also recently featuring on NBC’s sitcom Mr. Mayor, from creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and the Netflix animated series Maya and the Three, created by Jorge R. Gutiérrez.

She rose to acclaim in America with her performance in Fox Searchlight’s Under the Same Moon, which is one of the highest-grossing Spanish-language theatrical releases in U.S. history, and has also featured in such films as Bordertown, No Good Deed and All About Nina.

del Castillo has also appeared in series including PBS’ Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated drama American Family, The CW’s Jane the Virgin and Showtime’s Weeds, among others. Her one-woman Off-Broadway show, The Way She Spoke, made her the first Latina actress to earn Drama Desk, Drama League and Lucille Lortel Award nominations.

A philanthropist and outspoken global activist, del Castillo was appointed Ambassador for the Mexican Commission on Human Rights to combat human trafficking in 2009.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Among Artists Offering Civic Lessons in Netflix’s Animated Series “We the People”

Lin-Manuel Miranda is giving a civics lesson…

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican actor, singer, songwriter, rapper, producer and playwright, the mastermind behind the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton, lends his voice to the new animated Netflix series We the People.

Created by Chris Nee and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, the 10-part series provides a range of civics lessons through three-minute music videos on topics that include the Bill of Rights, immigration and the courts.

In addition to Miranda, the series also features award-winning artists H.E.R., Brandi Carlisle, Bebe Rexha and others.

Miranda took on the topic of “The Three Branches of Government” episode, writing and performing the song “Checks and Balances,” alongside Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Daveed Diggs, Brittany Howard and Robert Lopez.

With its light hip-hop bear, the catchy number explains the checks and balances of the United States government.

Meanwhile, Jorge R. Gutierrez directs the immigration-themed episode, which features the track “American Citizen,” performed by Bebe Rexha.

The 46-year-old Mexican animator, painter, writer, voice actor, and production designer helms Rexha’s pop message that lets everyone know from the second they are born, they are an “American Citizen.”

The episode is full of visual treats showing how the country is one built from a nation of immigrants, as animated versions of Sofia Vergara, Steven Chen, Anousheh Ansari and Padma Lakshmi are all featured to illustrate the point.

We the People premiered on Sunday, July 4 on Netflix.

Saldaña Joins the Voice Cast of Guillermo del Toro’s Animated Film “Book of Life”

Zoë Saldaña will be sharing the Book of Life with moviegoers…

The 35-year-old Dominican and Cuban American actress has joined the voice cast of 20th Century Fox Animation‘s Book of Life, which is being produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Mexican animator and filmmaker Jorge R. Gutierrez.

Originally titled Day of the Dead, after the famous Mexican celebration, the movie’s title is now Book of Life.

Guiterrez’s credits include Nickelodeon‘s award-winning animated television series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.

Along with Saldaña, the voice cast includes Channing Tatum, Diego Luna, Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Kate del Castillo and Ron Perlman, along with Cheech Marin, Hector Elizondo, Placido Domingo, Ana de la Reguera (Nacho Libre, Eastbound and Down), Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included), comedian Gabriel Iglesias (Stand-up Revolution) and Danny Trejo.

Fox will open the film in October 2014.

del Toro’s “Book of Life” to be Released by Fox Animation Studios

Guillermo del Toro’s latest animated project should be making its way to the big screen next fall…

Fox Animation Studios has reportedly signed on to make the 48-year-old Mexican filmmaker and Reel FX‘s adventure Book of Life, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fox will release the film, which del Toro is producing, in the United States on October 10, 2014.

Originally titled Day of the Dead, after the famous Mexican celebration, the films’s title has been changed to Book of Life (Pixar has its own Day of the Dead project in the works).

Latin-themed projects are in hot demand; Hispanics are the most avid moviegoers in the U.S., while animated family fare can do huge business throughout Latin America.

del Toro and Fox are keeping mum on the exact details of the film, but the Mexican filmmaker did personally Mexican animator and filmmaker Jorge R. Gutierrez to direct Book of Life. Gutierrez’s credits include Nickelodeon‘s award-winning animated television series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.

del Toro is currently in post-production on Pacific Rim, a film he directed for Legendary Pictures. Warner Bros. will release Pacific Rim on July 12, 2013.

del Toro to Produce Animated Day of the Dead Film

He’s already taking on a beauty and a beast… And, now Guillermo del Toro is ready to work with the living dead…

The 47-year-old Mexican filmmaker who directed the Hellboy films will produce the CG-animated The Day of the Dead with Reel FX, an animation and live-action development and production studio.

The film will be directed and co-written by Jorge R. Gutierrez, the 37-year-old Mexican animator who created the Emmy-winning animated television series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera for Nickelodeon.

The Day of the Dead centers on a Romeo and Juliet-type love story set against a Mexican Día de los Muertos backdrop.

“I have admired Jorge’s work for a long time. He has a unique aesthetic and sense of humor. Day of the Dead offers a perfect opportunity for his sensibilities to shine,” del Toro said. “This is a colorful, vibrant, vital fable that utilizes the animation medium in an incredible way.”

The film, which marks the first time since 1993′s Cronos that del Toro has collaborated on a feature in his native Mexico, is being eyed for a fall 2014 release.
