Aterciopelados Working on First Studio Album in Seven Years

Aterciopelados is readying for a comeback…

The Latin alternative rock band, led by Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago, is hard at work on their first studio album since 2008’s Rio, Buitrago tells Billboard.

“We have been playing some new songs on tour and are at work on more,” says Buitrago.

Aterciopelados plans to release the album at the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017.

Meanwhile, a DVD by Buitrago and Echeverri will be out in February on Sony Music. It will feature versions of well known Aterciopelados songs recorded live in Bogota with guest artists including Zoé singer León Larregui and Spanish fusionist Macaco.

Echeverri and Buitrago reunited in 2014 to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Aterciopelados after working respective solo projects; the band toured the U.S. in October.

Buitrago has also written the music for Another Word For Beauty, a play by Motorcycle Dairies screenwriter José Rivera.

The play, which will feature a live band, centers on the real-life story of contestants in an inmates’ beauty contest held at Bogota’s Buen Pastor women’s prison in Colombia.

Another Word for Beauty opens at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre on January 16.

Lopez to Star in Chilean Miner Drama “The 33”

Jennifer Lopez has managed to mine her latest acting role…

The 43-year-old actress/singer has signed on to star opposite Antonio Banderas in The 33, a film based on the Chilean miner saga, in a still-undisclosed role.

The drama, based on the true story of the 33 Chilean miners who were rescued after being trapped for 69 days in 2010, is being produced by Mike Medavoy.

The film will mark Lopez’s first big-screen role since starring opposite Jason Statham in this year’s action-thriller Parker.

Martin Sheen and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro have also joined the cast of the ensemble film.

Patricia Riggen (La Misma Luna) is directing the film from a screenplay written by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera, with production scheduled to begin in the fall in Chile.

In 2011, Medavoy nabbed the rights to the 33 miners, whose remarkable rescue from the San Jose Mine garnered headlines worldwide. The men were trapped half a mile beneath the Earth’s surface.

Banderas is playing the role of Mario Sepulveda, the charismatic miner nicknamed “Super Mario.” Sheen will play a miner’s father, while Santoro is tackling the role of a trapped miner.

Rivera to Pen Series About Hernán Cortés for Showtime

He brilliantly penned a story based on Che Guevara‘s diary about a motorcycle trip… And, now José Rivera will be writing about another Latino legend.

Jose Rivera

The 57-year-old playwright—the first Puerto Rican screenwriter to be nominated for an Oscar in 2005 for The Motorcycle Diaries—is penning the script for Showtime’s in-development series Conquest, which tells the story of conquistador Hernán Cortés, who led the Spanish conquest in Mexico, and his clash with Moctezuma II, the last ruler of the Aztec Empire which fell at the hands of Cortés and his men.

Hernan Cortes & Montezuma

Filled with blood, lust, gold, magic and mythology, Conquest is described as “a classic war story about two powerful men and their people, ultimately leading to the destruction of the Aztec culture and the men themselves.”

Oscar-winner Ron Howard is attached to direct Conquest, which happens to be one of his passion projects.

In addition, Howard and Rivera would executive produce the series with Brian Grazer and Imagine TV president Francie Calfo.

Conquest marks Rivera’s return to television, where he co-created the 1991 NBC series Eerie, Indiana.
