The CW Orders Extra Scripts of Rodriguez’s New Series “Jane the Virgin”

It appears there’ll be more of Gina Rodriguez on The CW

The 29-year-old Puerto Rican actress’ new series Jane the Virgin hasn’t premiered yet, but that hasn’t stopped the network from ordering three additional scripts from the freshman series.

The announcement comes on the heels of the positive response Jane The Virgin has received. It’s already garnered some of the best reviews for new series this fall, with Rodriguez touted to be one of this season’s breakout stars.

The vote of confidence comes three weeks ahead of the series premiere of Jane The Virgin. Based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen, the series stars Rodriguez as Jane, a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

In addition to the Filly Brown star, Jane the Virgin also starsJaime Camil, Yael Grobglas, Brett Dier, Andrea Navedo, Justin Baldoni, Ivonne Coll and Ryan Devlin.

The series premieres on Monday, October 13 at 9:00pm ET on The CW.

The CW has ordered to series the soap opera Jane the Virgin, starring the Puerto Rican actress.

Based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen, the series stars Rodriguez as Jane, a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

In addition to the Filly Brown star, Jane the Virgin also starsJaime Camil, Yael Grobglas, Brett Dier, Andrea Navedo, Justin Baldoni, Ivonne Coll and Ryan Devlin.

Jane the Virgin, which follows in the footsteps of other Spanish telenovela adaptations including Ugly Betty and Devious Maids,  is slated to launch this fall on the CW.

The 66-year-old Puerto Rican actress, who has portrayed the grandmother to Naya Rivera’s character on Glee and Katie Leclerc’s abuelita on Switched at Birth, has landed a series regular role on the CW’s drama pilot Jane the Virgin.

Based on the successful Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen, Jane the Virgin centers on Jane (portrayed by Filly Brown sensation Gina Rodriguez), a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Coll will portray Alba, Jane’s 60ish doting grandmother who teaches her at an early age the importance of staying pure until marriage. It’s later learned that Alba has actually been harboring a lifelong secret.

Early in her career, Coll, a former Miss Puerto Rico, starred in the films The Godfather, Part II and the Lean on Me.

Coll has appeared on television in shows like Teen Wolf, L.A. Law, Malibu Shores and Chicago Hope.

Navedo to Star in the CW’s Pilot “Jane the Virgin”

The Latina actress, who rose to acclaim on the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light, has joined the cast of the CW’s pilot Jane the Virgin, starring Gina Rodriguez and Jaime Camil.

Based on the successful Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen, the project centers on Jane (Rodriguez), a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Navedo will portray Xiomara, Jane’s mother, who is fiercely devoted to her daughter.

Navedo’s previous television credits include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Golden Boy, White Collar and How to Make It in America.

She most recently appeared in indie film Last I Heard and will next appear in the feature Superfast.

The 40-year-old Mexican actor/singer, who most recently starred in a gender-bending role on the telenovela Por Ella Soy Eva, is making his U.S. pilot debut with a starring role opposite Gina Rodriguez in the CW’s drama project Jane the Virgin.

Based on the popular Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen, Jane The Virgin centers on Jane (Rodriguez), a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Camil will play the series regular role of Rubio, who happens to be a world-famous telenovela star with a surprising connection to Jane.

Camil is currently starring on Univision’s new rom-com novela, Qué pobres tan ricos.

He made a successful feature debut in the U.S. as the star of the bilingual Patelion/Lionsgate indie hit rom-com Pulling Strings, which ranked as the third highest-grossing foreign language film of 2013.

Additionally, a recent guest appearance by Camil on Devious Maids delivered strong ratings for the Lifetime series, which also has Latin roots.

Jane the Virgin, from CBS Television Studios, is written by Jennie Snyder Urman and directed by Brad Silberling.

The CW has ordered a pilot episode of Jane the Virgin, an adaptation of the successful Spanish-language telenovela.

From CBS Television Studios, Jane the Virgin is written by Jennie Snyder Urman.

It centers on Jane, a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Juana la virgen, created by Perla Farias, was a hit in its original run on Venezuelan broadcaster RCTV in 2002, where it drew an average of 39.1% share, topping the competition by a wide margin.

The telenovela, which starred Daniela Alvarado and Ricardo Álamo, also did very well in Brazil, Spain, Colombia and Mexico and has been translated into nine languages.

The CW Looking to Remake the Hit Venezuelan Telenovela “Juana la virgen”

Following the crossover success of ABC’s Ugly Betty and Lifetime’s Devious Maids, the CW is looking to develop its own Spanish telenovela remake.

The network, in one of its first buys of the coming season, has put in development Jane the Virgin, a drama based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen.

Jennie Snyder Urman, the creator of the CW’s short-lived drama series Emily Owens, MD, will write the adaptation for CBS Television Studios.

Jane the Virgin centers on Jane, a hard-working, religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Should Jane the Virgin become reality, it would join ABC’s Ugly Betty, which was based on the Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, and the upcoming Sofia Vergara-executive-produced ABC series Killer Women, based on the Argentine crime drama Mujeres asesinas.

This would be Juana‘s second remake, following an Indian version.
