Martinez’s “Bulletproof” Performance Moves Her Forward on “The Voice”

“Melanie Martinez proves to be bulletproof on The Voice

During Monday night’s episode of NBC’s singing competition, which featured the start of the new Knockout Round, the 17-year-old Latina singer battled against her fellow Team Adam member Sam James.

After a “shaky rehearsal,” Martinez performed a toned down version of La Roux’s “Bulletproof,” while James took on Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis.”

Voice coach Blake Shelton complimented both singers, saying they have “something special,” but picked Sam as the winner.

But fellow coach Christina Aguilera disagreed.

“Melanie, when you open your mouth and you sing, it’s almost haunting,” professed Aguilera. “And it really invites you into this special world that only you are capable of creating.”

In the end, Adam Levine, who believed Martinez’s nerves made her performance more breathy than normal, picked the two-tone-haired singer to advance to The Voice’s live shows.

“Melanie has this really unique voice that I feel like no one has ever heard before,” he said after making his announcement. “She can go really, really far in this competition.

And a relieved Martinez is ready to make more music.

“I’m just so incredibly thankful for this opportunity,” said Martinez. “I’m so happy that I get to show America what I can do during lives.”
