Nicky Jam Wins Big with Six Awards at the Billboard Latin Music Awards

It’s a jammin’ year for Nicky Jam

The 36-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American reggaeton star, who rose to stardom after a decade of silence battling drug addiction, turned out to be the big winner at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, taking home six awards.

Nicky Jam

Nicky Jam, who claimed his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart earlier this year with Fenix, his first set in a decade, lived up to the album’s name. He was named Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, Male and Latin Rhythm Songs Artist of the Year, Solo.

His hit song “Hasta el amanecer” won Hot Latin Song of the Year — an award that includes radio airplay, sales and streams, underscoring Nicky Jam’s popularity across all platforms. “Hasta el amanecer” also won Digital Song of the Year, Streaming Song of the Year and Latin Rhythm Song of the Year.

Following in wins was the late Juan Gabriel, who won the coveted Artist of the Year award, as well as Top Latin Albums Artist of the Year, Male and Latin Pop Albums Artist of the Year, Solo. Gabriel’s album Los Dúo 2 won Top Latin Album of the Year as the top-selling release and Latin Pop Album of the Year.

Enrique Iglesias took home four awards, including Latin Pop Songs Artist of the Year, Solo. Iglesias and reggaeton star Wisin both won three awards for their hit collaboration “Duele el corazón”: Hot Latin Song of the Year, Vocal Event; Airplay Song of the Year; and Latin Pop Song of the Year.

Also winning three awards each were Banda Sinaloense MS De Sergio Lizarraga, CNCO, Gente de Zona and Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho. CNCO — a bilingual/bicultural pop group spawned from a TV reality show — were the winners in the coveted Artist of the Year, New category. The group, mentored by Ricky Martin and produced by Wisin, is currently playing its first major tour.

Special awards of the evening went to Ricardo Arjona, the iconic Guatemalan singer/songwriter, who was given the lifetime achievement award for a career that continues to be one of the most successful in Latin music. Luis Fonsi won the Spirit of Hope Award for his work with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Jennifer Lopez, who also won social artist of the year, was given the Telemundo Star Award.

Mars Receives Innovator Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards

Bruno Mars

But for Mars, who continues to make waves with his musical endeavors, including his latest album 24K Magic, the best is yet to come.

For the second straight year, the all-girl group took home the Best Cover Song award. Last year, they won the award for their cover of Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk;” this year they won for their performance of Elle King’s

Coronel Among Artists Featured on Tribute Album for the Late Ariel Camacho

Luis Coronel is paying tribute to a regional Mexican music legend…

The 21-year-old Mexican American singer is one of the artists featured on a tribute album for the late Ariel Camacho, who passed away two years ago.

Luis Coronel

DEL Records recently released the album, which features duets with Coronel, Gerardo Ortiz, Régulo Caro and other artists.

Titled Ariel Camacho Para Siempre Duetos Vol. 1, the album also includes a 15-minute DVD with never-before-released footage of the chart-topping artist, who died in a car accident at age 23 on February 25, 2015.

The new set, which includes songs like “Te metiste” and “Arrodíllate,” is a “celebration of Camacho’s life and legacy,” DEL Records Founder & CEO Ángel del Villar tells Billboard.

“Ariel’s career was about to kick off when this happened. We had big plans for him here at DEL Records and after he died, it’s been my personal project to continue his legacy. We have worked so hard to continue his dream with the help of the people who still consume and listen to his music,” Del Villar adds.

Following the death of Camacho, his band Ariel Camacho Y Los Plebes del Rancho became Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho, eight-time 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards finalists up for awards like artist of the year and top Latin album of the year with Recuerden Mi Estilo.

While Recuerden Mi Estilo is under DEL Records, the group Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho is no longer with the label.

“Regardless of what happened with Los Plebes, in the nine years I’ve worked in this industry, I’ve never seen the main artist of a band pass away and add a new vocalist and still have the same success as the original lead vocalist. We created a new group to continue Ariel’s legacy and we produced a great album (Recuerden Mi Estilo) that Ariel’s fans accepted and loved. It’s a lot of hard work but I give a lot of credit to the fans.”

Recuerden Mi Estilo debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums chart dated March. 10, 2016. The album was also No. 1 on Billboard’s 2016 year-end Regional Mexican Albums, and the Mexican group crowned the year-end Regional Mexican Artists Albums.

“When I met Ariel I asked him what he wanted to accomplish and he told me that he dreamed about performing in big venues. That kid was so humble that it motivated and inspired me and I knew he was the type of artist I need in my label.”

Shakira & Nicky Jam Top List of Billboard Latin Music Awards Finalists

Shakira and Nicky Jam are all tied up…

The 40-year-old Colombian superstar and the 35-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer-songwriter top the list of finalists for the 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards with each earning nine nominations.

Shakira & Nicky Jam

Shakira didn’t release an album in 2016. She competes in the social artist of the year category, while “La bicicleta,” her collaboration with Carlos Vives, is up for hot Latin song of the year, hot Latin song of the year, vocal event, and digital song of the year, among others.

In turn, Vives’ six entries are likewise largely driven by “La bicicleta.” Shakira is also up for an award with Chantaje,” featuring Maluma, which competes against herself in the hot Latin song of the year, vocal event category.

Nicky Jam is a finalist largely due to his chart-topping song “Hasta el amanecer,” up for hot Latin song of the year, airplay song of the year, digital song of the year, streaming song of the year and Latin rhythm song of the year. The rapper, whose longtime game plan is to only release one lead single a year — though let’s see if that changes in 2017 — is also a finalist for Latin pop song of the year for “Ya me enteré,” his collaboration with Mexican pop group Reik. Nicky Jam is also up for artist of the year.

They are followed in number of entries by superstar Enrique Iglesias and regional Mexican bands Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho and Banda Sinaloense MS De Sergio Lizarraga, with eight entires each; Maluma, Juan Gabriel and J Balvin with seven each; and Wisin joins Carlos Vives with six each.

The awards will air live on April 27 on Telemundo, capping the Billboard Latin Music Conference that takes place April 24-27 at the Ritz Carlton in Miami Beach.

Los Plebes del Rancho Earn First No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums Chart

Los Plebes del Rancho have earned a bittersweet first…

A little more than one year after the death of Ariel Camacho, lead singer of regional Mexican group Ariel Camacho y Los Plebes del Rancho, the new incarnation of the band, Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho (renamed in tribute to the former front man) debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart with Recuerden Mi Estilo.

Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho

The release sold 6,000 copies in the week ending March 10 (according to Nielsen Music) and marks the first charting album with new singer, Jose Manuel Lopez Castro.

It’s the first No. 1 for the trio, who earned two top five’s with its original singer: El Karma peaked at No. 4 (chart dated March 14, 2015), following his death on Feb. 25, 2015, while Hablemos reached No. 2 on the Nov. 28, 2015 chart.

On the Hot Latin Songs chart, the set’s lead single “Del Negociante” falls 13-15 from its peak, gathering 1.1 million U.S. streams during the tracking week ending March 10 (a six percent dip). Meanwhile, “No Lo Hice Bien” steps 22-21, “Que Caro Estoy Pagando” slips 18-23, and “El Mentado” remains at No. 49 for a second week.
