La Vida Boheme Teases Upcoming New Album “La Lucha”

La Vida Boheme is ending its trilogy with a fight

Using one of the most important words in the Spanish language, lucha, in their latest album title, the Venezuelan alternative independent band’s stirring new album completes a courageous trilogy that began with the attention-grabbing Nuestra and continued with the somber-toned Será.

La Vida Boheme

After documenting the increasing opaqueness of the their lives in Venezuela on Será, the members of La Vida Boheme moved to Mexico, where they were joined by Calle 13 founder turned producer Eduardo Cabra in the studio.

The record opens with a spoken word intro by former Uruguayan president and “less is more” icon José Mujica.

“¿Te molesta si canto?” lead singer and songwriter Henry D’Arthenay repeats on the first song, “Voce”, parting the curtain on an album that echoes eighties punk and new wave and at the same time updates the sound of the folklore-rooted Latin American protest song movement.

La Lucha will be released on Friday, March 24 via Nacional Records.

Jarabe de Palo Releases Music Video for New Single “Hoy No Soy Yo,” Launching U.S. Tour

 Jarabe de Palo is back…

The Barcelona band, known for its laid back bluesy rock sound, has released the official music video for “Hoy No Soy Yo.”

 Jarabe de Palo

It’s the first single from Jarabe de Palo’s new album, arriving February 18 on Nacional Records.

In addition to the album, the band is launching a cross-country U.S. tour starting on March 15 at New York’s B.B. King Blues Club.

Recalling past songs like its early hit “Depende,” the band’s leader Pau Donés engages in some everyday existentialism in the catchy new track. The video, which had its premiere on Billboard.com, translates Donés’ search for self-identity into images of street fashion.

Jarabe de Palo, whose name is a Spanish expression for corporal punishment, first gained popularity and radio airplay in the mid-90s in Spain and Latin America with “La Flaca,” the title track of the group’s first album, and it remains a Latin alternative classic. A remake of the song from Carlos Santana‘s new album, featuring Juanes, was released in December. The single debuted at No. 7 on the Latin Digital Songs chart.

Blades May Sign with Nacional Records

Rubén Blades is looking to become a Nacional star…

The 64-year-old Panamanian salsa singer/songwriter/actor, is looking to make Los Angeles-based Nacional Records the possible home for his new music, according to Billboard.com.

Rubén Blades

Blades, who spoke at this week’s Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) in New York, said he was still unsigned with several music projects on the way.

The singer also confirmed he has two upcoming feature films in the works, including The Counselor with Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt and John Leguizamo.

“I’m not signed to a label,” said Blades during an interview at the conference, adding that he’s been working on several projects including the re-recording of his music from his time at Fania, the salsa label that was co-founded in the mid ’60s by Dominican-born composer Johnny Pacheco.

Tomas Cookman, who founded the LAMC, owns Nacional Records and confirmed that he had a weekend meeting with Blades about working with the singer.

“We had an amazing time together,” said Cookman. “The coming weeks will get us closer to potential next steps. I can’t wait.”

So it looks like Blades, who is also attached to the feature Hands of Stone with Robert De Niro, could have a bright future at Nacional.

“We’re going to look forward [to meeting with Blades in the upcoming weeks],” Cookman said. “He’s so beloved. It’s an exciting time for Nacional Records. We have plans to expand in 2014.”
