Altitude Releases Trailer for Diego Maradona-Themed Documentary

Diego Maradonais kickin’ it old school… so to speak.

Altitude has released the first footage from its Cannes Film Festival-bound documentary Diego Maradona, which centers on the 58-year-old Argentine retired professional footballer and current manager of Mexican second division club Dorados.

Diego Maradona

Directed by Asif Kapadia, the documentary was constructed from more than 500 hours of rare footage. It centers on the career of the celebrated soccer star during his time at Italian club Napoli in the 1980s.

The film will chart the iconic sporting story of how the genius soccer star arrived at the ailing Italian side Napoli and turned them into a force, winning their first ever national championship.

The glory also came with a price, however, as Maradona became almost a prisoner in the city. His inner demons were never far away.

The film will play Out Of Competition and Maradona will attend the Cannes Film Festival.

The film will roll out in cinemas from this summer.

Suarez Named the World’s Top Goal Scorer in 2016

Luis Suarez is kicking his way into the history books…

The 29-year-old Uruguayan professional footballer, a striker for FC Barcelona and the Uruguay national team, topped all goal scorers worldwide in 2016 with 40 goals, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

Luis Suarez

Suarez won the IFFHS award for the world’s best top division goal scorer 2016 for the third time in his career.

Suarez came ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored 38 goals, and Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, who notched 36 goals, according to the IFFHS statement.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo was in fourth place with 35 goals, followed by Benfica’s Jonas with 32, while Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Eran Zahavi was sixth with 31 goals.

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski came seventh with 30 goals.

Suarez now holds the record for winning the award three times with three different clubs in three different countries, according to the IFFHS.

Suarez won the award for the first time in 2010 with Ajax Amsterdam, and then in 2014 with Liverpool.

Among the players who have won this award twice are Ronaldo in 2014 and 2015 and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in 2012 and 2013, though Messi finished in 10th this year with 26 goals.

Chelsea Interested in a Deal with Higuain

It looks like Gonzalo Higuain is on-demand…

The 25-year-old France-born Argentine pro soccer player has been tipped to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, as he continues to be linked to several clubs in Europe.

Gonzalo Higuain

In fact, Higuain has been quoted as saying that Chelsea is also interested in a deal, having played under Mourinho at Real.

“Mourinho wants me there,” Higuain is quoted as saying.

At the end of last term Higuain was tapped to join Juventus but when that move broke down he made it clear that he had made his mind up to leave Madrid.

That led to Arsenal being strongly linked to a move, while Rafa Benitez‘s Napoli have also been associated with viewing the forward as a replacement for Edinson Cavani.

With Madrid unwilling to let their star go on the cheap, the Spanish giants put a €40million price tag on his head and that is well within Chelsea’s spending budget.

AS add that while Mourinho has stated his admiration for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, and insisted he is Chelsea’s only summer transfer target, that is a smokescreen to reveal that he wants to strengthen his front line at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho is a big fan of Higuain and used him as a regular striker during his three years as head coach at Real Madrid.

Cavani Signs Lucrative Five-Year Deal with Paris Saint-Germain

Edinson Cavani has landed a record salary en Francia

The 26-year-old Uruguayan soccer star – a prolific goal-scorer known for his ability to score impressive goals – has signed a five-year contract with  Paris Saint-Germain.

Edinson Cavani

The defending Ligue 1 champion paid Napoli $84 million – a record in French soccer – for Cavani, who led Italy’s Serie A with 29 goals last season.

Napoli drove a hard bargain, PSG owner Nasser el-Khelaifi said at a press conference to introduce the soccer club’s latest acquisition, though adding that the deal was indispensable to his project of making the Parisian side “the best team in Europe.”

The transfer announced on Tuesday is the fifth most costly in the history of professional soccer.

Cavani, who helped the Uruguayan national team win the 2011 Copa América, will receive a salary of 10 million euros a year.

“I have been able to verify the confidence the team has in me from all the efforts they have made and all the money they have invested in my signing,” said Cavani.

PSG’s first league title in almost two decades was due in great part to the scoring prowess of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who led Ligue 1 with 30 tallies, and the addition of Cavani is likely to take some pressure off of the Swedish international.
