Christina Aguilera to Host Intimate ‘Premiere Party’ at Billboard Latin Music Week

The 41-year-old half-Ecuadorian American singer will take part in this year’s Billboard Latin Music Week, taking place September 26-October 1 at the Faena Forum in Miami.

But Aguilera isn’t the only new addition to the lineup…

Justin Quiles will take part in an engaging panel about connecting people with music through technology, while Wisin y Yandel will join Nicky Jam for a compelling conversation during The Nicky Jam Rockstar Show Live from Billboard Latin Music Week.

Jhayco Earns First No. 1 as a Soloist on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

It’s a special first for Jhayco

The 29-year-old Puerto Rican singer and rapper rises to No. 1 on Billboard’Latin Airplay chart with “Sensual Bebe” on the August 13-dated ranking.

JhaycoThe song marks his fifth champ on the all-Latin genre list, and his first as a soloist, unaccompanied by another act.

“Hitting No. 1 with a solo song was an overdue milestone for my career,” Jhayco tells Billboard. “We’ve been working towards that for quite some time and there are more to come. I don’t doubt it.”

“Sensual Bebe” climbs from No. 7 to lead Latin Airplay after a 29% surge in audience impressions, to 9.3 million, earned in the U.S. in the July 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The track simultaneously takes the Greatest Gainer honors of the week on two charts, as it advances 5-1 on Latin Rhythm Airplay.

“Sensual” gives JhayCo — who formerly performed as Jhay Cortez — his fifth leader on both lists, and first unaccompanied by any other collaborator. Jhayco’s first Latin Airplay No. 1 arrived through “Dakiti,” a co-billed collaboration with Bad Bunny, which spent two weeks at No. 1 (December 2020-January 2021). It also earned him three Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2021. The song concurrently won him the fourth-longest command in the history of the all-metric Hot Latin Songs, ruling for 27 weeks, behind only Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber (56 weeks); Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailando” (41 weeks); and Nicky Jam and Iglesias’ “El Perdón” (30 weeks).

Back on Latin Airplay, Jhayco leads for the first time as a soloist, unassisted by any other act.

Grupo Firme to Take Part in ‘Superstar Panel’ During Billboard Latin Music Week

Grupo Firme will be taking part in this year’s Billboard Latin Music Week.

The Regional Mexican band will take part in one of the various superstar panels during the event, which will take place on September 26-30 at Miami’s Faena Forum.

Grupo FirmeFounded by Eduin Caz in Tijuana, Mexico, in 2013, Grupo Firme — which straddles the genres of banda and norteño — is comprised of Eduin’s brother Jhonny Caz, Abraham Hernández, Joaquín Ruiz, Christian Gutiérrez, José Rubio and Dylan Camacho.

Touring titans, in 2021, the band secured a historic booking at Los Angeles’ 20,000-capacity Staples Center as the first Latin act to perform the most shows in a single calendar year at the venue with seven sold-out concerts this summer. (The only other artist who has done more in one year is Adele, with eight performances in 2016.)

Yahritza y Su Esencia Sign Worldwide Deal with SESAC Latina

The 15-year-old Mexican singer and her siblings Jairo and Armando Martinez, best known by their group name Yahritza y Su Esencia, have signed a worldwide deal with SESAC Latina.

“We are very excited to welcome Yahritza y Su Esencia to the SESAC Latina family,” Celeste Zendejas, vice president, SESAC Latina, said in a statement. “Their debut single premiered at number one on the Hot Latin Songs Billboard chart, and they are growing into a cultural phenomenon in the Mexican genre. We are honored to be part of their continued success.”

To mark the beginning of their new deal with the performance-rights organization, Yahritza Y Su Esencia — who are signed to indie label Lumbre Music — took the stage to perform “Enamorado” and “Soy El Único” during the 2022 SESAC Latina Music ceremony on June 29.

Yahritza y Su EsenciaTheir partnership with SESAC Latina comes on the heels of the trio’s unprecedented success, which has catapulted them to the top of the Billboard charts.

Earlier this year, the self-taught musicians made history with the sad sierreño anthem “Soy El Unico” as the track scored a No. 20 entry on the Billboard Hot 100, making lead singer Yahritza the youngest Latin performer to enter the all-genre tally.

Additionally, “Soy El Único,” penned by Yahritza at age 13, debuted at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated April 9.

“I don’t write my songs specifically for anyone. I just observe what’s going on around me and I get ideas from it,” she previously told Billboard.

In April, the group — which hails from Yakima, Wash. — dropped their five-track EP, Obsessed, which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Regional Mexican Albums chart. According to a press release, Yahritza Y Su Esencia is currently working on a full album, set to drop “later this year.”

Nicky Jam’s “Ojos Rojos” Reaches No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer’s has earned another No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as his single “Ojos Rojos” climbs 5-1 to lead the April 23-dated ranking.

“Ojos Rojos” advances from No. 5 – having previously reached No. 4 for two weeks – in its 11th week, thanks to a 48% boost in audience impressions, to 10.5 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending April 17, according to Luminate, formerly MRC Data.

WSKQ New York posted the biggest increase among panelists, up 1 million to 1.8 million, followed by WMEG San Juan, P.R. (up 564,000 to 914,000), and KXOL Los Angeles (up 497,000 to 842,000).

The coronation of “Ojos Rojos’” arrives amid Nicky Jam’s Infinity Tour, which kicked off February 3 in Boston.

The song evicts J Balvin and Ed Sheeran’s “Sigue” from its one-week reign and takes home the Greatest Gainer honors of the week.

With the new champ, Jam collects his 16th No. 1 – among a collection of 39 career entries – and first as a soloist without any other artist since the two-week champ “El Amante” in February 2017. Since then, he’s placed 10 other leaders, all through collaborations.

In addition, the song pushes 3-1 on Latin Rhythm Airplay, Nicky Jam’s first leader in almost a year following “Fan de Tus Fotos” with Romeo Santos (May 2021).

Elsewhere, “Ojos Rojos” makes progress on the all-metric Hot Latin Songs chart, entering the top 20 (24-20) despite a decline in both sales and streams: Hot Latin Songs blends airplay, digital sales and streaming data.

Nicky Jam to Launch Season Two of “The Rockstar Show” in Mid-April

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American artist will return for a second installment of his The Rockstar Show.

The second season will be available on April 14.

Luis Fonsi Releases New Album “Ley De Gravedad”

It’s a grave new world for Luis Fonsi.

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican singer has released Ley De Gravedad, his latest album from Universal Music Latino.

Luis FonsiAlways the romantic, Fonsi taps into his core as a singer/songwriter who writes tracks armed first and foremost with his guitar, in this collection of songs about love won and lost and reclaimed.

There are several danceable songs on the album, like the airy “Vacaciones” alongside Manuel Turizo and “Bésame,” which highlights a lighter side of Myke Towers.

And Fonsi definitely has developed a penchant for cross-genre collaborations.

On Ley De Gravedad he joins forces with a veritable who’s who of the urban world, including Rauw Alejandro, Nicky Jam, and Dalex.

But the heart of the album is the soulful ballads, like “Iglú” and the final “Girasoles,” where Fonsi sings simply accompanied by just his guitar in a hopeful reflection of the power of love and life.

Enrique Iglesias Reclaims Record for Most No. 1s on Billboard Latin Airplay Chart with “Me Pasé,” Featuring Farruko

The 46-year-old Spanish singer, songwriter, record producer, philanthropist and actor has recaptured his record for the most No. 1s on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Me Pasé,” featuring Farruko, ascends 4-1 on the October 2-dated survey.

With 32 No. 1s on the almost 27-year list, Iglesias pushes ahead of J Balvin for the most leaders. The latter notched his 31st leader as he locked up the No. 1 spot with “In Da Getto,” with Skrillex, on the September 11-dated tally.

“Me Pasé” takes over atop Latin Airplay thanks to a 26% boost in audience impressions, to 11.3 million, in the U.S. in the week ending September 26, according to MRC Data.

Notably, Iglesias has held the record for the most No. 1s on the Latin Airplay chart almost continuously since 1996, when he achieved his fifth No. 1, then passing Selena (who had a leading four No. 1s at that point).

The Latin Airplay chart began only two years earlier, in 1994. Since then, Iglesias has held the most No. 1s on the list except for a brief time earlier this year, when J Balvin tied with him for the most, when the former notched his 31st No. 1 on the September 11 chart with “In Da Getto.”

With “Me Pasé” at the summit, Farruko reaches his highest Latin Airplay ranking in 2021 as he’s scored two No. 3 high tracks (“Perfecta,” with Luis Fonsi, January 2; and “Pepas,” September 25).

Besides conquering Latin Airplay, Iglesias and Farruko also rule Latin Pop Airplay as “Me Pasé” lifts 2-1. Iglesias improves his career total to 25 No. 1s, extending his lead far ahead of second-place Shakira, with 19. Farruko captures his sixth leader.

Meanwhile, Final (Vol. 1), Iglesias’ 11th studio album, debuts at No. 2 on Latin Pop Albums. It’s his first studio effort since 2014’s No. 1 Sex and Love, and it earns him a 12th top 10. In between, Iglesias secured a No. 2 high with a Greatest Hits (2019) set, which has remained steady in the tally’s top 10 during all but one week of its 103-week run.

The 11-track Final (Vol. 1) includes five tracks that were originally released between 2015 and 2018 but were not previously released on an Iglesias album. Among them are a pair of No. 1s on Hot Latin Songs: “El Perdón,” with Nicky Jam, and “Duele El Corazón,” with Wisin.

“I took a pause in between albums because I was touring and because I wanted to enjoy the success of my previous album,” Iglesias tells Billboard. “I have never stopped writing and going to the studio though. The plan was to release the album at the beginning of last year, but once COVID hit, it delayed everything, obviously.”

Final, released September 17 via Sony Music Latin, starts with 4,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 23rd. Out of the 11-track set’s opening sum, 3,000 derive from streaming activity, which equates to 5 million U.S. streams of the set’s tracks. The remaining 1,000-unit sum stems from album sales and track equivalent album units.

“The biggest challenge was not being able to have everyone in the same studio and trying to follow all the precautions,” Iglesias continues. “We were trying to finish all the production aspects of the songs, which we managed to do being careful. Everyone involved wanted to see this bulk of work out and we managed to finish the process during COVID to have it ready so we could put it out now.”

On the overall Top Latin Albums chart, Final arrives at No. 12, also the Spaniard’s first appearance with a studio set since 2014. “When I work on an album, I start with 50 songs!” Iglesias adds. “Then it becomes 30, 20…so on. So, through the process, I relate to every single one in a way. I always say that if I’m going to put any music out, it must be something that I like and be willing to sing every single night, for years if needed. It’s hard to handpick just one, but I really enjoy ‘Chasing the Sun.’ It talks about staying young and staying positive. It’s a song that always puts me in a good mood.”

As Final arrives, one track launches on the all-metric Hot Latin Songs chart: “Pendejo” at No. 33. The set, however, was preceded by five songs, one of which ruled the tally for 30 weeks in 2015. Here’s the recap:

Bad Bunny Claims 10 Billboard Latin Music Awards Trophies, Including Artist of the Year

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican superstar scored 10 wins at the 2021 Billboard Latin Music Awards, including the biggest award of the night… artist of the year.

Bad Bunny, a 22-time finalist, also won songwriter of the year; Hot Latin Songs artist of the year, male; Latin Rhythm artist of the year, solo; and Top Latin Albums Artist of the year, male.

His hit song “Dákiti” featuring Jhay Cortez, won Hot Latin Song of the year; Hot Latin Song of the year, vocal event; and streaming song of the year.

And in the coveted album of the year category, Bad Bunny’s hit album YHLQMDLG won in a triple competition against his own El Ultimo Tour del Mundo and Las Que No Iban a Salir.

Bunny picked up his awards during the live show, which aired from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla., on the Telemundo network and featured performances and premieres by Daddy Yankee, Rosalía, Rauw Alejandro, Natti Natasha, Carlos Vives, Myke Towers, Jhay Cortez and Nicky Jam, among others.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards, given in 56 categories, honor the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin music as determined by Billboard’s renowned weekly charts, during the period rom the rankings dated February 1, 2020, through this year’s August 7, 2021, charts, a longer than usual period due to the pandemic.

Following Bad Bunny in number of wins was Jhay Cortez — with three for “Dákiti” — and the Black Eyed Peas, whose hit “Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life)” with J Balvin won sales song of the year, while their “Mamacita” with Ozuna and J. Rey Soul won Latin pop song of the year. The Peas were also the winners of the crossover artist of the year, thanks to their groundbreaking album Translation, where they paired up with multiple Latin acts.

Urban star Karol G swept the female awards, winning Hot Latin Songs artist of the year, female, and Top Latin Albums artist of the year, female. Fellow Colombian Maluma, along with The Weeknd, also took home two awards for “Hawái,” and Prince Royce, who continues to break ground in tropical music, won tropical song of the year with “Carita Inocente” and tropical album of the year for Alter Ego.

In the rapidly growing realm of regional Mexican music, stalwarts Band MS de Sergio Lizárraga won Hot Latin Songs artist of the year, duo or group and Regional Mexican artist, duo or group. In turn, newcomers Eslabón Armado won Top Latin Album artist of the year, duo or group, and Regional Mexican album of the year for Tu Veneno Mortal.

In a year that was full of new music, the versatile Myke Towers, who does both rap and reggaetón, won the new artist of the year award, buoyed by a string of successful hits and albums. And Tainy once again took home the producer of the year award.

The evening was punctuated by a slew of special moments. Daddy Yankee received the Billboard Hall of Fame award, becoming the first urban artist to receive the honor and underscoring nearly two decades of steady hitmaking. In turn, Yankee performed the television premiere of his new single, “Métele al Perreo.”

Rock legends Maná received the new Billboard Icon award, and premiered their new single, “Reloj Cucú,” alongside newcomer Mabel.

And regional Mexican grand dame Paquita la del Barrio’s 50-year storied career was recognized with Billboard’s Lifetime Achievement Award, accompanied by an attitude-filled performance of her vintage hit “Rata de dos patas” and “El Consejo” alongside Ana Bárbara.
