The 42-year-old Spanish basketball coach  has been named the head coach of the Santurce Cangrejeros, one of the 10 clubs in Puerto Rico’s BSN pro basketball league.

Paco Olmos
Olmos said at a press conference that his main objective with the San Juan-based team is to emphasize an intensive defense with European-style tactical concepts.

“Everyone is proud to belong to this club, (to be a part) of global basketball and to learn and contribute certain ideas for our game,” said Olmos, who in 2002 won the Eurocopa as coach of Pamesa Valencia.

Olmos also said that he’ll demand from his team “the humility, respect, professionalism from the first day to give 100 percent.”

The Cangrejeros have been one of the most successful teams in the BSN, winning six championships out of the seven finals in which they’ve participated.

Olmos emphasized that the BSN is “an important league with great development, with players who have excellent physical and athletic conditioning” and he did not hesitate to call them the best in the world.

Among the players who will wear the Cangrejeros uniform are two members of the Puerto Rican team at the 2012 London GamesRicky Sanchez and Alex Galindo – as well as Javier Gonzalez, William Orozco, Sammy Villegas and Walter Hodge.

The BSN season starts on March 31, and the first home game for the Cangrejeros at San Juan’s Roberto Clemente Coliseum will be on April 9.
