The 42-year-old Mexican American former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has won the American Century Championship for the third time.

Tony RomoThe current NFL television analyst beat Mark Mulder and Joe Pavelski with a 5-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff on Sunday.

Romo also birdied the par-5 18th in regulation to earn three points and match Mulder and Pavelski with 62 points at Edgewood Tahoe in the modified Stableford scoring system event.

Romo also won at Edgewood Tahoe in 2018 and 2019.

Tony Romo“I had to keep patient,” Romo said. “Coming from behind is a great feeling. All the wins here are special, but this one was different because my boys are 10 and 8 years old and they were into it.”

Mulder won three straight times from 2015 to 2017.

Annika Sorenstam and Adam Thielen tied for fourth with 58 points.

Tony Romo Developing Football Drama Series for Showtime

Tony Romo is bringin’ the drama to the small screen…

The 41-year-old former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL analyst is teaming up with star Chace Crawford, executive producer and Showtime to develop a football drama.

Tony RomoThe series, currently in the early stages of development at the ViacomCBS-owned network, follows a fictitious first family of football and the players, coaches, and power brokers behind the high stakes world of America’s biggest professional sport.

The network is searching for a writer for the untitled project, which comes from eOne, where Comins and his Creative Engine Entertainment is based.

Romo and Crawford are brothers in law. Romo, who is currently an announcer for CBS after spending 14 seasons with the Cowboys, is married to Crawford’s sister Candice.

The project has been described as a cross between Succession and Friday Night Lights.

Tony Romo to Compete in Fundraising Golf Tournament at the Dallas Area’s Maridoe Golf Club

Tony Romois ready to swing his club for a good cause…

The 40-year-old Mexican American former Dallas-Cowboys-quarterback-turned-NFL-commentator is set to take part in a 54-hole fundraising tournament involving a handful of Dallas-area pros and top amateurs.

Tony Romo

The golf tournament will take place this week, with entry fees earmarked for the caddies at Maridoe Golf Clubin Carrollton, Texas.

Golf Channelfirst reported the event, and Alison Morrison, managing member at Maridoe Golf Club, confirmed the details of the tournament to ESPN, with 18 holes to play Tuesday through Thursday, mostly by members of the club.

The event, called the Maridoe Samaritan Fund Invitational, was conceived only a little more than a week ago, Morrison said, and quickly turned into a sellout that required the club to turn away potential players.

“We’re a caddie-only club, and our caddies have not been working because of COVID-19,” Morrison said. “We thought, why don’t we have a little bit of a match, so to speak, sharpen our blades, put on a 54-hole, social distancing event. Leave the pins. No rakes in bunkers. Let’s play for them, basically. And within a day, I had 24 members who said yes.”

The event will feature 72 players, who each pay $250 to enter, with those fees going to the club’s caddies. A separate pool is being raised as a purse for the pros who compete in the event, with Morrison expecting portions of any winnings to also go to the caddies.

The club has remained open during the coronaviruspandemic, but there will be strict rules in place, including the various social distancing guidelines that are in effect around the country. The driving range has been converted to a short, par-3 course where players can warm-up — but they will not be permitted to arrive more than 30 minutes before their tee time.

The players will compete in threesomes but are required to carry their own bag or use a pull cart. No caddies will work the event, except as walking scorers in each group. Players will not turn in scorecards.

Three-time major champion Jordan Spiethis a member at Maridoe but won’t be able to compete, Morrison said, though she expects him to attend.

Among the pros who are in the field are Viktor HovlandScottie Schefflerand Harry Higgs. Former NBAguard Deron Williamsis also listed among the entries, as is Romo.

The event will be separated into three flights by handicap, including an elite flight in which the various pros in the field will compete for a small purse.

“We believe confidently that we can do this and have a great event and show that this is a fantastic sport to enjoy in these times,” Morrison said. “We hope others embrace it, as well. This is bigger than shooting a good score.”

Texas is scheduled to be the location for the first official PGA Tourevent in June when a revised schedule has the Charles Schwab Challengeat Colonial in Forth Worth, June 11-14. The tournament is to be played without spectators.

“Maridoe embraces the social-distancing responsibilities and is particularly suited to meet all the necessary criteria to have a safe and healthy tournament,” the club’s owner, Albert Huddleston, said in a statement. “This was a beautiful opportunity to contribute to the Maridoe Samaritan Fund and help those caddies who have been affected.”

Tony Romo Signs Long-Term, Lucrative Deal with CBS Sports

Tony Romo has scored a big deal…

The 39-year-old Mexican American former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has signed a long-term deal to remain with CBS Sports for the 2020 NFL season and beyond in a reported $17 million per year deal.

Tony Romo

CBS’ deal with the NFL expires after the 2022 season, but Romo’s contract goes beyond that. CBS is expected to retain their rights when the next round of negotiations start, which could happen this year once a new collective bargaining agreement with players is finalized.

Romo joined CBS Sports in April 2017 as the lead game analyst for The NFL on CBS, and also called Thursday Night Footballgames during that season.

Romo and boothmates Jim Nantzand Tracy Wolfson have been the lead NFL announcing team for the past three seasons, and called the February 2019 Super BowlCBS will also broadcast Super Bowl LVin Tampa, Florida, in February 2021.

The move to the booth has been an instant hit for Romo, who quickly became known for uncanny predictions on upcoming plays and insightful analysis.

ESPNwas expected to make an aggressive bid for him to move to the Monday Night Footballbooth but never got the chance.

Romo spent 14 years as the quarterback for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, working his way up from an undrafted free agent to the starter as of 2006. He led the Cowboys to six playoff appearances and became a four-time Pro Bowler before retiring following the 2016 season.

He currently holds several Cowboys team records, including passing touchdowns, passing yards, most games with at least 300 passing yards and games with three-plus touchdown passes. Romo threw for 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns in his NFL career.

Tony Romo Defends Title at American Century Championship Celebrity Tournament

Tony Romois still the celebrity to beat…

The 39-year-old former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL analyst completed a wire-to-wire victory Sunday in the American Century Championship.

Tony Romo

It’s his second consecutive win in the celebrity tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Romo closed with a 2-over 74 and scored 20 points to finish at 71 in the modified Stablefordscoring system. Former pitcher Mark Mulder, the winner in 2015-17, was 10 points back after a 71 and a 24-point day.

Romo became the fourth player in tournament history to successfully defend the title. With Romo an amateur, the $125,000 first prize was donated to official tournament charity Stowers Institute for Medical Research.

“It’s an honor to win this tournament,” Romo said. “I came in with confidence and this is some of the best golf I’ve played these past few weeks. When I won last year, every shot mattered. This year, it was easier. That’s why we practice so much.”

Tony Romo Leads After First-Round at the American Century Championship

Tony Romo is one step closer to defending his turf…

The 39-year-old Mexican American former Dallas Cowboys quarterback-turned-NFL analyst birdied six of his final 11 holes to take the first-round lead Friday in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Tony Romo

Romo, the defending champion, shot a 2-under 70 and scored 26 points in the celebrity tournament that uses the modified Stablefordscoring system.

Arizona Cardinalscornerback Patrick Peterson was two points back, and former Major League Baseball pitcher Derek Lowe was another point behind. Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltzwas fourth at 22, and actor Jack Wagner, a two-time winner in the event, had 21.

Romo, who has competed in two PGA Tour events this year, played the back nine in 5-under 31 after getting off to a slow start with two bogeys and a double-bogey on his first five holes.

“I think I had two points after five holes,” Romo said. “So from that point on, I got pretty hot.”

Charles Barkley, the former NBA star who has regularly finished last or second to last, birdied the second hole.

“Did he hit somebody and they threw it in the hole?” Romo joked.

Barkley was at minus-12 points, but he was ahead of 14 players in the 90-player field.

Romo to Serve as Lead NFL Analyst for CBS

Tony Romo is leaving the football field, but he isn’t leaving the game…

Following the Dallas Cowboys’ officially release of the 36-year-old quarterback, the 4-time Pro Bowler who will become the lead NFL analyst for CBS, it was announced Tuesday.

Tony Romo

“It was a very difficult decision. I went back and forth a number of times,” said Romo in a conference call with ESPN.

Romo said the Houston Texans were at the top of his wish list if he kept playing, but the CBS offer was too good to pass up.

“It really had nothing to do with the Texans and everything to do with CBS,” Romo said. “I felt like it was the right decision. My wife would tell you we’ve had a lot of late nights. It was nice to have some clarity.”

But Romo hasn’t officially said he’s retiring.

“Do I envision playing football? Absolutely not,” he said. “Do I expect to get some calls? Yes, that’s the reality.”

One NFL executive told ESPN via text message that “Romo is now every team’s emergency backup QB in case your starter gets hurt” and that those teams would have to “pay him to come out of ‘retirement.'”

Romo said: “You never say never,” but added that “there’s no part of me that wants to play.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he wishes Romo and his family “nothing but the best.”

“As an organization, we did what he asked us to do in terms of his release, and we wanted to do what was ultimately in his best interest and in the best interest of his family,” Jones said in a statement.

“Tony has been a wonderful representative of the Cowboys organization for 14 years, and he left everything he had on the field. He will leave us with many great memories and a legacy of being, truly, one of the greatest players in Cowboys history. We are thrilled for him and his family that he will be able to continue working as a professional in the game he so dearly loves. He is a young man who is just getting started on a long journey in life. All the best my friend.”

With CBS, Romo will become the No. 1 color commentator — replacing former NFL quarterback Phil Simms — alongside play-by-play veteran Jim Nantz. He also had drawn interest from Fox and NBC.

“Going from one legendary team to another as I begin the next phase of my career is a dream come true,” Romo said in a statement. “I have always known that once my playing career was over I wanted to become a broadcaster. I am ecstatic for the opportunity to work with Jim as I learn the craft and convey to fans my passion for this great game.”

Romo said on the conference call that he expects his new broadcasting job to be difficult, but “I’ve got to attack this just like football.”

The Cowboys’ move to make Romo a post-June 1 release designation softens the blow against the salary cap this season. Instead of counting $24.7 million against the cap in 2017, Romo would count $10.7 million this year and $8.9 million in 2018. The Cowboys would gain $14 million in cap space this season, but it would not become available until June 2. The Cowboys will carry $19.6 million in dead money for the 2017 season, $8.9 million in 2018 and $3.2 million in 2019.

Romo’s decision came down to his health, sources close to the situation told ESPN. Romo, who turns 37 on April 21, believes his family and his health are paramount. He was limited to playing in parts of just five games over the past two seasons because of collarbone and back injuries, and he suffered a compression fracture in his back in August that led the way to Dak Prescott‘s emergence.

Prescott posted his thanks to Romo on Instagram.

Romo now will get to spend more time with his family while retaining a strong connection to the game.

As the network’s No. 1 color commentator for the NFL, Romo will work with Nantz on Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening games. He also will be in line to work CBS’s coverage of Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta in February 2019.

Romo — a scratch golfer — also could wind up working on CBS’s golf coverage down the line, sources told ESPN, but he first wants to focus on football.

“Tony has been one of the NFL’s biggest stars for the past decade, and we are thrilled to welcome him to CBS Sports,” CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said in a statement. “He will bring the same passion, enthusiasm and knowledge that he displayed on the field to the broadcast booth. He brings a fresh and insightful perspective to our viewers having just stepped off the field. We know Tony will quickly develop into a terrific analyst, and alongside Jim Nantz, will become a must-listen for fans each week.”

CBS said it was discussing future options for Simms, who served nearly 20 years as the network’s lead NFL analyst.

Romo stepping away from the game affects numerous NFL teams since the market for Romo was expected to be robust. Romo no longer will be a consideration for the Texans and Denver Broncos — unless he were to unexpectedly return from the broadcast booth to the playing field.

However, a source directly involved told ESPN’s Ed Werder, “He’s done. It’s over. This was a no-brainer.”

Romo is the Cowboys’ all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns. He has a career record of 78-49 but never was able to get the Cowboys past the divisional round in four playoff appearances. His 34,183 passing yards and 248 touchdown passes are the most in team history. Romo also holds team records for 300-yard passing games (46), games with multiple touchdown passes (79) and consecutive games with a touchdown pass (38). In 2012, he threw for a club-record 4,903 yards, and on Oct. 6, 2013, against the Broncos, he threw for a franchise-record 506 yards. He has the NFL record with a touchdown pass in 41 straight road games.

“Tony Romo has a unique combination of athletic ability, arm talent, vision, and instincts for the game,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said in a statement. “What separates Tony from many other players, however, is a rare competitive spirit. Tony loves to play. Tony loves to compete. The best ones always do. In practice. During games. On the field. Off the field. Tony competes to the end in everything that he does. That relentless spirit that Tony plays with is contagious. He makes his teammates better. He makes his coaches better. He makes his team better.”

Romo to Remain on Cowboys’ Active Roster While Recovering from Back Injury

Tony Romo is staying active

The Dallas Cowboys will keep the 36-year-old Mexican American quarterback on their active roster, according to a source, in hopes that he can return sooner rather than later from a compression fracture in his back.

Tony Romo

If the Cowboys put Romo on injured reserve, he would miss at least the first eight weeks of the season, per league rules.

Rookie Dak Prescott will start in Romo’s absence, beginning with the season opener against the New York Giants.

On Sunday, the Cowboys announced the signing of veteran Mark Sanchez to be Prescott’s backup. The Cowboys made room for Sanchez on the roster by waiving Jameill Showers instead of placing Romo on injured reserve.

After Romo was hurt on August 25 against the Seattle Seahawks, sources said he would need 6-10 weeks to recover. If he returns at the early end of the timeline, he would play October 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals or October 16 against the Green Bay Packers.

The Cowboys have their bye week on October 23.

If he needs the full timeline, he would return November 6 against the Cleveland Browns. If the Cowboys had placed him on injured reserve, the first game he would be able to play would be against the Browns, but first he has to go to court to win his injury claim with the Personal Injury Lawyer Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Romo suffered a compression fracture of his L1 vertebra when he was driven into the turf by Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril during a preseason game. Romo was going into a slide when the hit occurred. He wanted to re-enter the game but the coaches held him out, and an MRI the next day revealed the fracture.

He is scheduled to be in a back brace for another week.

After the preseason finale against the Houston Texans on Thursday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the decision on Romo could come down to one game that could make a difference in a playoff spot.

The Cowboys are crossing their fingers that Romo heals quickly.

Sanchez to Play for the Dallas Cowboys This NFL Season

Mark Sanchez has found a new home, home on the range…

The Dallas Cowboys have made it official, signing the 29-year-old Mexican American veteran NFL quarterback two days after he was released by the Denver Broncos.

Mark Sanchez

To make room for Sanchez, Dallas released Jameill Showers, who was the team’s No. 3 quarterback during the preseason. Showers started the preseason finale for the Cowboys, completing 10 of 25 attempts for 91 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Sanchez, who didn’t play in the Broncos’ final two preseason games, completed 20 of 30 attempts for one touchdown and one interception in the first two exhibition games with Denver.

He previously spent several seasons with the New York Jets, as well as one season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys were in need of a veteran presence after Tony Romo suffered a broken bone in his back, forcing him to miss as many as 10 weeks.

Dallas named rookie Dak Prescott as its starting QB.
