Fox Renews Josh Segarra’s Comedy Series “The Moodys” for Second Season

Josh Segarra is still moody…

Fox as picked up a second season of its comedy series The Moodys, featuring the 34-year-old Puerto Rican actor.

Starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, the show is based on Australian series A Moody Christmas. It started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season last year.

The second season, targeted for the 2020-21 season will not be holiday-themed, with a bigger order size than the six-episode original limited run. It’s believed to be a 6 to 13-episode season.

“With The Moodys, we set out to brand the holidays in the only way Fox can – bold and unconventional. What we ended up with was a special show – and a family – everyone at the network fell in love with,” said Michael Thorn, president, Entertainment, Fox Entertainment.

Written by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill,The Moodys follows the tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, Moody family through their misadventures.

“Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill perfectly captured the hysterics of Christmas, with sharp banter and real moments of family togetherness brought to life by Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins and the rest of the incredible cast,” Thorn added. “Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and CBS Television Studios have been great partners on this series; and, simply put, we’re looking forward to The Moodys’ future adventures.”

The Moodys is co-produced by CBS Television Studios and Fox Entertainment.

The first installment of The Moodysfollowed Dan Moody as he returns home to spend Christmas with his dysfunctional family. When he arrives, he’s met with the inevitable madness of a family whose members are all hiding things from each other.

The Moodys family includes Sean Sr. (Leary), his wife, Ann (Perkins), and their three grown children – Dan (Francois Arnaud, the youngest of the siblings and the “creative one”; Bridget (Chelsea Frei), the middle sister and the “overachiever”; and Sean Jr. (Jay Baruchel), the oldest sibling and “screw-up,” still living at home with his parents. The Moodys also features María Gabriela de Faría, Segarra, Kevin Bigley and Gerry Dee.

Segarra’s previous credits include Orange is the New Black, Sirens, AJ and the Queen and Katy Keene.

Josh Segarra to Star in NBC’s Comedy Pilot “Night School”

Josh Segarra is heading to night school…

The 33-year-old Puerto Rican actor will star as the male lead opposite Shanola Hampton in NBC’s multi-camera comedy pilot Night School, based on the hit 2018 Universal movie.

The project hails from Marlonco-creator Christopher Moynihanand the film’s star-producer Kevin Hart, producer Will Packerand director Malcolm D. Lee.

Segarra was tapped for Night School as he just became available when Netflix canceled the RuPaul-starring dramedy series AJ and the Queen after one season.

Penned by Moynihan and directed by Phill Lewis, NBC’s Night School revolves around a unique mix of adults at a night school GEDprep class who unexpectedly bond over their shared experience and find themselves helping one another both inside and outside of the classroom.

Segarra will play Teddy Walker, a charming salesman. The role was played by Hart in the movie. Hampton plays the teacher, Carrie Dawes, portrayed by Tiffany Haddishin the film.

In addition to Hampton, Segarra joins previously cast Ian Gomez, Collette Wolfe, James Earland Joe Massingill.

This marks Segarra’s return to NBC and Universal Televisionafter recurring on the network and studio’s drama series Chicago P.D. several years ago. The Orange Is the New Blackalum has been recurring on CW’s Arrow as Adrian Chase/Prometheus; on Comedy Central’s The Other Two as Lance, Brooke’s simple-minded ex-boyfriend; and on Fox’s holiday event series The Moodys.

Josh Segarra is ready for a moody holiday…

The 33-year-old Puerto Rican actor has landed a recurring role opposite Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins in The Moodys (fka A Moody Christmas), Fox’s half-hour holiday event series adaptation of the Australian series.

Slated to air in December, the single-camera comedy series hails from CBS Television Studios, which will co-produce with Fox Entertainment.

Written by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenbergand Tad Quill, the six-episode series revolves around the Moodys, including Sean Sr. (Leary), his wife Ann (Perkins), their three grown children and an assorted mix of extended family members who gather for the holidays, with each packing his/her own eccentricities and complications.

Segarra will play Marco, “a commodities broker with exquisite phone skills” who is the son of Uncle Eugenio and Aunt Kathy. Handsome and charming, he thinks he might have found “the one” in Cora, though he’s not the most attentive boyfriend and is completely unaware that Dan is immediately smitten by his girlfriend.

Segarra plays Adrian Chase/Prometheus on the CW’s Arrow, which begins its eighth and final season on October 15.

He’ll next be seen starring alongside RuPaul Charles on Netflix’s anticipated dramedy AJ and the Queen and also will return to Comedy Central’s The Other Twoin his recurring role of Lance.

He recently was seen as C.O. Stefanovic on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black.

Josh Segarra has landed a royalproject…

The 32-year-old Puerto Rican actor has joined the cast of AJ and the Queen, Netflix’s upcoming comedy series starring RuPaul Charles.

Written by Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King and RuPaul, the series stars RuPaul as Ruby Red, a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway. As these two misfits, one tall, one small, travel from city to city, Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better. And RuPaul performs a killer musical number in every drag club.

Segarra will play Hector in the series.

He can be seen as Jason in the feature remake of Overboard for MGM, as Adrian Chase/Prometheus on the CW’s Arrow and ‘C.O’ Stefanovic on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.

His other recent credits include Judd Apatow’s feature film Trainwreck and USA comedy series Sirens.

Broadway Cast Recording of “On Your Feet!,” Feat. Villafañe, to be Released in April

Ana Villafañe will have you on your feet, even if you’re nowhere near the Great White Way…

The original Broadway cast recording of On Your Feet!, the musical based on Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s life and starring the Cuban/Salvadoran-American actress and singer will be released on April 29 via Masterworks Broadway.

The album, which features Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine’s classic tracks in a new light, was recorded live at the Broadway Marquis Theatre and produced by the Estefans.

The musical chronicles the Estefan’s journey to stardom and features a string of hits like “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Conga,” “1-2-3,” “Get On Your Feet,” “Mi Tierra,” “Don’t Want To Lose You Now,” and “Reach.”

Following the family tradition, it also includes an original song, “If I Never Got To Tell You,” written by Gloria and her daughter Emily Estefan.

The live album also features the musical’s orchestra, which includes several members of The Miami Sound Machine.

On Your Feet!, which premiered last November, features Villafañe in the role of Gloria and Josh Segarra as Emilio Estefan.

Villafañe Signs with United Talent Agency

Ana Villafañe has new representation…

The Cuban-American singer, dancer and actress has signed with United Talent Agency (UTA).

Villafañe currently stars as a series regular on Hulu’s hit series South Beach.

On the film side, she’ll next be seen in Max Steel, opposite Maria Bello and Andy Garcia.

She also portrays singer Gloria Estefan, opposite Josh Segarra in On Your Feet! The Story Of Emilio & Gloria Estefan, a new musical about the powerhouse pop singer and her producer husband (and the Miami Sound Machine) that earned excellent reviews earlier this summer in its Broadway tryout in Chicago. The show, with book by Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman Or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is staged by Jerry Mitchell (direction) and Sergio Trujillo (choreography).

Villafañe, who attended the same Miami high school as Gloria Estefan, won the role through a filmed audition when she could not make the Miami call.

The show begins previews October 5 at the Marquis Theatre and is slated to open on November 5.

Villafañe to Portray Gloria Estefan in the Broadway Musical “On Your Feet!”

It’s a Miami Sound Machine moment for Ana Villafañe…

The Cuban-American singer, dancer and actress has been cast as Gloria Estefan in On Your Feet!, the highly anticipated Broadway musical about the Latin music superstar and her equally talented husband, producer Emilio Estefan.

Villafañe, who attended the same Miami high school as la Estefan, wasn’t able to make the open casting call last fall but sent a video audition, according to an announcement Monday from the production team. She got the call to audition for director Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Hairspray) and the Estefans, and was cast in the show.

She’ll star opposite Josh Segarra, who will portray Emilio.

The musical — a rare Latino-themed Broadway offering that will surely benefit from Estefan’s global status — is based on the life story of the seven-time Grammy-winning singer and her husband, who owns 19 of his own Grammys. It’s slated to open at Broadway’s Nederlander-operated Marquis Theatre on November 5, following previews beginning October 5. I

n addition to staging by Mitchell, the show will have choreography by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis), with a book by Oscar winner Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman). Prior to Broadway, the show will try out at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre from June 2-July 5.

“She walked into the room, and I immediately thought to myself – ‘this is it’,” Mitchell said of Villafañe in a prepared announcement. “Not only was she beautifully reminiscent of a young Gloria, but she embodied her energy and spirit in such a captivating way. And then she fully rose to the occasion by giving a sensational audition.”

Villafañe’s film and television credits include Magic City Memoirs (executive producer Andy Garcia), Los Americans and the upcoming Hulu original series South Beach: Fever as well as the female lead in Max Steel (Mattel), set for global release this summer.

Segarra has appeared in New York in Second Stage Theater’s Dogfight and Lysistrata Jones. On television, he stars in USA’s comedy series Sirens and has a recurring part on NBC’s Chicago PD as well as PBS’ The Electric Company, and guest appearances on Showtime’s Homeland and FX’s The Following. This summer, he’ll appear in the Judd Apatow feature film Trainwreck.

The company will also feature Andréa Burns (In The Heights) as Gloria Fajardo (Gloria’s mother); Alma Cuervo (Beauty And The Beast) as Consuelo (Gloria’s grandmother); Alexandria Suarez as Little Gloria; and Noah Johnston as little Emilio.

David Rockwell (Kinky Boots, On The Twentieth Century) has designed the sets, with costumes by Emilio Sosa (Porgy & Bess), lighting by Kenneth Posner (Wicked, Hairspray), sound by Steve Kennedy and projections by Darrel Maloney. The show is produced by James L. Nederlander and Estefan Enterprises Inc., in partnership with Bernie Yuman.

In anticipation of a wide-ranging social media campaign to publicize the show, the production also released three videos about the Estefan’s and the making of the musical.

Segarra Lands Role in Judd Apatow’s Comedy “Trainwreck”

Josh Segarra is a trainwreck…

The 28-year-old Puerto Rican actor has landed a role in Judd Apatow’s latest comedy Trainwreck.

Segarra, who was recently upped to series regular for the second season of USA Network’s comedy series Sirens, will portray the role of Oli, a Staten Island smooth talking guy.

The ensemble cast includes Amy Schumer, Daniel Radcliffe, Tilda Swinton, Marisa Tomei, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, Barkhad Abdi, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, Vanessa Bayer, John Cena, Ezra Miller, LeBron James and Method Man.

Trainwreck is scheduled to hit theaters on July 24, 2015.

Segarra Upped to Series Regular on USA Network’s “Sirens”

Prepare for more of Josh Segarra on the USA Network..

The 28-year-old Puerto Rican actor has been upped to series regular on the cable network’s comedy series Sirens.

Segarra, who starred in the Broadway musical Lysistrata Jones, recurred for five episodes of Sirens’ freshman run.

From creators Denis Leary and Bob Fisher, the series follows three Chicago EMTs who, despite their narcissistic and self-destructive personalities, are uniquely qualified to save lives.

Segarra portrays the handsome yet dim bulb cop Billy —Theresa’s (Jessica McNamee) new partner and friend who brings out Johnny’s (Michael Mosley) jealous side.

He becomes the latest Sirens cast member to be promoted to series regular for season two. Bill Nunn, who plays EMT Cash, was also upped for its sophomore run after appearing in nearly all of the half-hour comedy’s rookie run as a recurring guest star.

USA renewed Sirens for a second season in June.

Segarra previously starred as who Hector Ruiz, Jessica Ruiz’s older brother,on the television show The Electric Company. His other television credits include appearances on Blue Bloods, Chicago P.D., The Following and Homeland.

Segarra Scores a Ballin’ Broadway Gig…

Josh Segarra is hoopin’ it up on Broadway… And, he could soon be kissin’ the rim all the way to the Tony Awards.

The 25-year-old Puerto Rican American actor/singer is making his Broadway debut in Lysistrata Jones, which opened this week at New York City’s Walter Kerr Theatre after a successful off-Broadway run.

The musical comedy—featuring plenty of hilarity, heart and hoops—is based on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, a bawdy play from 411 B.C. about one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War by persuading the women of Greece to withhold sex from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace.

The sweet-voiced Segarra stars as Mick, a dim-witted college basketball player with the soul of a poet whose girlfriend refuses to “put out” until his team ends the school’s 30-year losing streak in the Lysistrata Jones.

“I get to play basketball and be on Broadway in a smart piece of theater that’s like nothing else out there,” Segarra tells Broadway.com about the role that’s allowing him to combine his love of sports and theater. “I could play him as a stereotype, but that’s my biggest fear. I don’t want people to think, ‘What a douchebag!’ I want audiences to say, ‘Aw, what a dufus. That’s funny. I get him and I know that kid.’”

But that isn’t the Longwood, Florida native’s only fear about starring in this sex (or lack thereof) comedy with of-the-moment jokes and lively song and dance numbers. He cringes at the thought of performing a nightly striptease scene set in a brothel.

“It’s terrifying,” says Segarra, who appeared as Hector Ruiz on the reboot of the ‘70s children’s series The Electric Company, laughing about having to strip down to his underwear on stage. “It never gets easy. The whole time I’m thinking, ‘I ate Chinese food last night. Do I look fat today?’ I don’t want anyone to think, ‘Oh, he was much cuter with his shirt on!’”

No matter how he looks shirtless, Segarra’s strong singing voice, agile dance moves and handsome good looks will surely win over audiences.

“I’ve never done regional theater, and I’m getting to make my Broadway debut as a principal, playing a pretty cool part.” he says. “I’m going to be the best I can be.”

So what’s Segarra’s ultimate hoop dream?

“To have a family and be able to get 10 scripts on my desk, pick one, fly out and shoot [a movie] and come back to see my kids,” he says.

But for now, he’s having a ball playin’ ball on Broadway.
