Gloria “Goyo” Martínez Launches Solo Career with New Dembow-Infused Single “Na Na Na”

Gloria “Goyo” Martínez is saying na (na na) to going it alone…

The Afro-Colombian singer/rapper, who co-founded the Colombian hip-hop group ChocQuibTown 20 years ago, has officially marked the beginning of a solo career by releasing her new single “Na Na Na.”

Gloria “Goyo” Martínez The dembow-infused, club-ready track is a perfect introduction to what Goyo’s project as a soloist is all about: female empowerment.

“With ChocQuibTown I could also sing about empowering women — but to say it alone and in my own words, it just has a different impact,” she tells Billboard. “Writing on my own has allowed me to reflect, analyze and really think about what I want to say,”

Launching her own career doesn’t mean she’s leaving the trio, which also includes her brother Slow and her husband Tostao. The trio are still very much committed to ChocQuibTown and, are even set to release a new single in April.

But having her very own independent project is something Goyo has been planning for quite some time.

“We’ve always considered ourselves a group where we can also respect each other’s individuality. For example, Slow likes the production side more and is often producing for other artists. I wanted to invite our fans to my world and give them the opportunity to know the woman behind Goyo.”

Timing was everything Goyo explains, and she’d have to find the right song to aunch her solo career. After many studio sessions searching for the song, inspiration came when she sat with Rauw Alejandro‘s go-to producer, Mr. Nais Gai, artist Fuego and her brother Slow during a writing camp at her favorite studio House of Hits in Miami.

“When we all come together, because we’re Afro, we always say that Wakanda is in the house. That day, they were showing me some beats and I suggested instead we start from scratch. So we brought in some instruments and built a structure. My brother stopped by and created a melody and it was pure magic,” she says. “I wrote the song’s first verse on the spot. The end result is a song that I love and I believe many women will adopt as their own anthem.”

Going solo coincides with the release of her upcoming album and HBO documentary, En Letra de Otro, where she re-imagines classics like Shakira‘s “Antologia,” Tego Calderón‘s “Pa’ Que Retozen” and Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong‘s “Summertime.”

“The creative process for this project was easy in a sense — because I just had to revisit my roots and remember those days when I used to stay up to watch Shakira videos. Or during the pandemic, my vocal coach asked me to sing “Summertime,” and it really had a huge impact on me — because it was around the time when George Floyd was killed,” Goyo explains. “Recording this album pretty much trained me, and gave me an idea of what working alone would be like.”

For now, fans can listen to Goyo’s new single “Na Na Na.”

En Letra de Otro is out DSPs and on HBO March 4, with additional projects (as a solo artist and with ChocQuibTown) to be announced later this year.

“I’m ready to explore a new side of me and reach new ears. Sometimes, you just have to what your heart tells you to do.”

Mars Wows Viewers as Host & Musical Guest on SNL

It’s been said that, “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” If that’s the case, Bruno Mars has proven he’s got comedic chops to match his singing abilities.

In his second appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend, the 26-year-old part-Puerto Rican Grammy-winning singer-songwriter did more than serve as the musical guest. He also hosted NBC’s long-running sketch comedy for the first time ever.

Bruno Mars

From Mars’ opening monologue to his final sketch, Mars’ appearance proved to be quite an entertaining affair and helped give NBC its highest ratings for an episode of Saturday Night Live since Lindsay Lohan hosted in March.

Mars, sans hat, broke into song partway through his opening monologue in a song that focused on his first-time-hosting nerves, singing “Can I put aside my fears? Can I be like Timberlake?” He closed the song with “Please be gentle,” then gave viewers his best pouty face.

Mars’ first sketch, which centered on a talk show called Haters with Sunny Taylor Tomkins, centered on a mother-daughter duo and featured Mars in his best To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar! impersonation. Playing a 17-year-old unemployed high school dropout named Crystal, Mars stole the sketch with dialogue.

“You’re just jealous ‘cause I’m young and I got a debit card and I know where to party,” declared Mars in character. “Ya’ll just mad ‘cause you ain’t got this. You ain’t got this. Quit hating alright, ‘cause Jesus made me perfect!”

Moments later, Mars appeared in the most memorable sketches of the night, as an intern at the Pandora Internet Radio Headquarters.

When Pandora suffers a power outage and the Green Day channel comes thisclose to going out, Mars’ geeky intern character Devon is called upon to impersonate Billie Joe Armstrong during one of the songs, which he does masterfully. He then impersonates Aerosmith‘s Steven Tyler, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Louis Armstrong and Michael Jackson.

And in the most poignant segment, a SNL Digital Short entitled Sad Mouse, Mars played a lonely guy who lands a job wearing a mouse suit in Times Square. His girlfriend had just dumped him and his dad had just left him for his other family, so he was worried what he’d do if people ignored him. “What if they don’t wave back?” he tearfully asked his new employer.

Mars wanders around in the mouse suit, desperately looking for love to no avail. Mars then pulls out the letter from his dad (Dear son, this is our other family) before finally connecting with a hula-skirted frog at the end.

In addition to his sketches, Mars took to the stage to perform two of this new singles. Mars first performed “Locked Out of Heaven” and later returned to sing his new ballad “Young Girls.” Both songs will appear on his upcoming album Unorthodox Jukebox.

Spalding to Replace Beyoncé in “A Star Is Born” Remake?

She beat out Justin Bieber for the Best New Artist award at the 53rd Grammy Awards… And, now Esperanza Spalding could be replacing Beyoncé on a highly anticipated big screen project.

Following Beyoncé’s recent exit as the lead in the Clint Eastwood-helmed remake of A Star Is Born, the Hollywood legendary actor/director is reportedly looking at the 27-year-old part-Mexican jazz singer to fill in the female lead role.

Esperanza Spalding

Beyoncé quit the project due to scheduling issues, which has opened the door to Spalding to sign on for her first-ever big screen role.

However, sources say that until a male lead is signed, no discussions or offers will be made with the female lead.

In the remake to the 1976 musical film, Beyoncé was set to tackle the character which was originally played by Barbra Streisand. When the “Crazy In Love” singer was pregnant with her first child, Warner Bros. Pictures postponed the production, which was expected to begin this past February.

The delay was seen as an opportunity to give the studio more time to find the lead actor. Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Will Smith and most recently Bradley Cooper have been mentioned as the contenders, but no deal has been firmed up  of now.

The A Star Is Born remake promises an updated version of a romantic relationship between an alcoholic star on his way out and a young female artist on the rise.

Earlier this year, Spalding, who performed a moving rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World,” released her follow up album entitled, Radio Music Society.

Spalding Shines in Oscars Tribute Performance

It’s a tradition during the Oscars telecast to pay respect to Hollywood’s fallen talents… And, Esperanza Spalding’s tear-jerking performance during the “In Memoriam” montage at Sunday’s Academy Awards proved to be fitting tribute.

The 27-year-old part-Mexican singer—who won Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy Awards, making her the first jazz artist to win the award—sang a restrained and powerful rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” while backed by the Southern California Children’s Choir.

During Spalding’s performance, the names and faces of Hollywood’s lost legends were projected in stark black and white behind her, including Whitney Houston, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Tim Hetherington and Jane Russell. The moving montage closed with a clip of Elizabeth Taylor as “Cleopatra.”
