STX picked up the KJ Apa-Carson pandemic thriller produced by Invisible Narratives back in August. The movie was one of the first to shoot in Los Angeles during the pandemic under COVID-19 safety guidelines.

The film now will be available for $19.99 for a 48-hour rental on all transactional platforms. Following Songbird‘s nesting on PVOD, it will premiere on a major streaming service in 2021.

From producer Michael Bay and director Adam MasonSongbird follows Riverdale‘s Apa as Nico, a bicycle messenger in a post-apocalyptic near future where COVID-19 has mutated to COVID-23. He’s smitten with his girlfriend Sara (Carson), who he hasn’t been able to see during the pandemic. Complicating life greatly is that the government is snatching up people who have the virus and tossing them into camps. Demi Moore, Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Alexandra Daddario and Paul Walter Hauser also star.

Mason co-wrote the script with Simon Boyes.

“The pandemic has affected every aspect of our business, from production to release, but Songbird demonstrates that a nimble studio like STX can find effective and profitable ways to make their movies work,” says STXfilms Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson. “The show must go on. Songbird is a thrilling movie that will speak to audiences in this moment as it keeps them on the edge of their seats.”

There’s an all-star cast here with Moore, Bradley Whitford, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Walter Hauser, Craig Robinson and more in this feature directed and co-written by Adam Mason, with Simon Boyes co-writing.

STX captured Songbird‘s UK and North American rights at the end of August. No release date has been announced yet.

The film was one of the first features to be shot this past summer in Los Angeles during quarantine, paving the way for production safety protocols.

HBO Max Renews Selena Gomez’s Quarantine Cooking Show “Selena + Chef” for a Second Season

There’s more cooking in Selena Gomez’s future…

HBO Max has ordered a second season of the 28-year-old Mexican American singer/actress’ quarantine cooking show Selena + Chef for a second season.

Selena Gomez

With the sophomore season now on order, Gomez can look forward to whipping up even more delicious and challenging dishes in the comfort of her home.

“Learning from some of the best chefs in the world has vastly improved my cooking skills but I have a lot more to learn. I am looking forward to challenging myself in the kitchen on the next season,” Gomez said.

The unscripted quarantine cooking show features the “Lose You To Love Me” singer preparing a wide variety of dishes, while a slew of expert chefs virtually guide her through each and every step.

Selena + Chef, which premiered on HBO Max earlier in August, featured Gomez teaming up with culinary masters including Antonia Lofaso, Ludo Lefebvre, Roy Choi and Tanya Holland. In each episode, guest chefs highlight a charity of their choosing.

Season two of Selena + Chef not only brings the show a new set of recipes ranging in difficulty, but also a new slate of culinary experts and charities to be highlighted.

During HBO’s leg of the virtual CTAM tour, Gomez and Selena + Chef producer Aaron Saidman revealed that the first season of 10-episode series was filmed remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The filming process entailed crew rigging cameras inside Gomez’s kitchen and living room and controlling the machines from outside.

Gomez, who just released her highly anticipated collaboration with Blackpink, “Ice Cream,” shared that participating in the show and rediscovering a passion for food and cooking has helped her get out of her quarantine rut.

“[The show] was an opportunity to make something that could make people smile,” she said at CTAM.

Selena + Chef  is executive produced by Gomez via her July Moon Productions.

Oscar Nuñez to Star in Netflix’s Quarantine Anthology Series “Social Distance”

Oscar Nuñez is keeping his distance…

The 61-year-old Cuban actor and comedian has been cast in Netflix’s upcoming quarantine anthology series Social Distance.

Oscar Nuñez

Hailing from Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, the series will also star Scandal’s Guillermo Diaz, Love Victor’s Isabella Ferreira, Katy Keene & In The Heights star Daphne Rubin-Vega, Danielle Brooks, Mike Colter Asante Blackk, Peter Scanavino, Lachlan Watson, Max Jenkins and Marsha Stephanie Blake.

Set in the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Social Distance is an eight-part anthology series that showcases the power of the human spirit in the face of uncertainty and isolation. Each standalone episode is told through a virtual lens and captures the unique emotional experience of being forced apart by circumstance and having no choice but to communicate remotely and rely on technology to maintain any sense of connection. Through these varied and deeply human stories, Social Distance aims to provide some much-needed catharsis during a tumultuous time while also capturing a snapshot of this singular moment in history.

The project was conceived, cast and executed entirely remotely during quarantine. The writers never met during the writing process, Diego Velasco directs talent remotely, Hilary Weisman Graham runs production from her living room and the cast acts and films themselves from home. Some of the actors’ real-life relatives also guest star in the series.

“Many of these stories required casting actors who were quarantined with other actors. That hurdle seriously hindered our options and so casting non-actors was sometimes essential,” said Weisman Graham on the decision to cast actors’ family members. “It was definitely a roll of the dice, but thankfully, we were thrilled to discover that talent really does breed talent. These family members may not have had aspirations to be in front of the camera when we first started, but they should all quit their day jobs immediately.”

Weisman Graham, who also serves as showrunner, executive produces with Tara Herrmann, Blake McCormick and Kohan. Velasco, who directed an episode of Orange Is the New Black and is working with Kohan on her upcoming series Teenage Bounty Hunters is directing and will co-executive produce.

Social Distance cast members include (in no particular episodic order):

Camila Cabello Writing New Music While in Quarantine

Camila Cabello isn’t wasting time while in quarantime…

The 23-year-old Mexican and Cuban singer-songwriter’s words of encouragement to her fans this week has given them a clue that Cabello’s next album might already be in the works.

Camila Cabello

Cabello posed a photo surrounded by her guitars and keyboards as she casually lounged on the couch. “Sending so much love to everyone,” she started off her sweet social media message. “Been writing a lot of new music and it’s coming from a really pure place. reminding myself everyday that life is now; and not in yesterday or tomorrow. let’s be extra gentle, soft, and kind to ourselves and others today.”

It’s the first official new music update from Cabello since she released her sophomore album Romance on December 6, 2019, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Cabello recently reimaged three of her Romance singles, her No. 1 hit “Señorita,” featuring boyfriend Shawn Mendes, “My Oh My,” featuring DaBaby and “Liar,” in a piano medley for her virtual “Priceless Experiences at Home” concert series.

HBO Max Releases Trailer for Selena Gomez’s Cooking Series “Selena + Chef”

Things are cookin’ up for Selena Gomez

The 28-year-old Mexican American singer/actress is putting her cooking chops to the test in the new HBO Max series Selena + Chef.

Selena Gomez

From perfecting French omelettes to undercooking cheese soufflés, Gomez said working on her culinary skills helped get her out of the quarantine rut.

“I was definitely getting down and a lot is going on,” said Gomez.  “[The show] was an opportunity to make something that could make people smile.”

Gomez says her first unscripted series afforded her the skills and confidence to take on challenging dishes. While some of the show’s featured recipes, including one for a spicy miso ramen, have become staples for the singer, Gomez said there are a few she’ll never tackle again.

“I really, really didn’t like that. It’s a whole process never doing it  again in my life,” Gomez said of a challenging octopus dish featured in the trailer.

The 10-episode series, which begins streaming on HBO Max on August 13, was filmed remotely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Wizards of Waverly Place star, who has been quarantining with friends and family, detailed the “strange” process of shooting the series remotely in her new home.

Crew members, who were regularly tested for the virus, received temperature checks upon arrival and wore face coverings at all times; did not come in contact with Gomez and those who quarantined with the singer. Instead, they operated remote cameras, rigged in the singer’s living room and kitchen, from outside.

“There was no one in my house but here are these cameras everywhere,” the singer said motioning to her ceiling. “That’s so crazy it comes out so well. It comes out like a normal cooking show but also very odd because everyone is outside everywhere.”

Angelo Sosa, Candice Kumai, Daniel Holzman, and Ludo Lefebvre are among the culinary experts who instructed Gomez in the new series.  Additional chefs include Nancy Silverton, Nyesha Arrington, Roy Choy, Jon & Vinny and Tanya Holland.

Selena + Chef  is executive produced by Gomez via her July Moon Productions.
