The 43-year-old Puerto Rican playwright and screenwriter has received a Drama League Awards nomination for hisacclaimed two-part play The Inheritance.
Lopez received the nod for writing the project, which is a loose adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel Howards End. Set in New York three decades after the height of the AIDS epidemic, The Inheritance wrestles with what it means to be a gay man today, exploring relationships and connections across age and social class and asking what one generation’s responsibilities may be to the next.
Karen Olivo received a Distinguished Performance Award nod for her performance in the Moulin Rouge! musical.
The 43-year-old part-Puerto Rican and part-Dominican actress/singer originated the lead role of Satine in the stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge! on Broadway.
She’d previously received a Drama League nod for her performance in West Side Story.

The 39-year-old Puerto Rican actress earned the nomination in the Distinguished Performance category for her work in Halfway Bitches Go Straight to Heaven, which highlights the harrowing, humorous, and heartbreaking inner workings of a women’s halfway house in New York City.
Rodriguez’s co-star Liza Colón-Zayasalso received a Drama League Award nomination for her performance in Halfway Bitches Go Straight to Heaven.
It’s the Latina actress and playwright’s first nomination from the group.

The 49-year-old Cuban American actor/singer and Broadway star picked up a nod in the Distinguished Performance category for his performance in Seared, the new comedy by critically-acclaimed playwright Theresa Rebeck.
Honoring productions that opened during the COVID-19-shortened 2019-2020 season, the nominations were announced by Beetlejuice’s Alex Brightman and Leslie Rodriguez Kritzervia livestream last night. Voting is currently open for Drama League members through May 22, with winners to be announced via livestream in June.
During last night’s specially-named Gratitude Awards, the Drama League honored the late five-time Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally (the organization’s lifetime achievement award was accepted by McNally’s husband Tom Kirdahy on his behalf); Marianne Elliott as the recipient of the Founders Award for Excellence in Directing; and James Lapineas the recipient of the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater Award.
The Drama League also announced that “the spirit of The Gratitude Awards” will live on via a new honorary category for next year’s Drama League Awards with The Gratitude Award, for a person or organization who has shown fearless support and kindness to the theater community.
