Cuevas Defeats Gilles Muller to Reach Nottingham Open Final

Pablo Cuevas is one step away from a career first…

The 30-year-old Uruguayan tennis player reached the first grass-court final of his career on Friday after beating Gilles Muller in three sets at the Nottingham Open.

Pablo Cuevas

Before this week, Cuevas had only two match wins on grass in his 12-year career. This week he’s won four after beating Muller 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the semifinals.

Cuevas is eyeing a sixth career title against Steve Johnson of the United States.

“I’m so happy to reach my first final on grass,” Cuevas said. “I have played every match with more confidence and today I beat an excellent player on grass. Hopefully tomorrow I will enjoy it, too.”

Cuevas has had to rally all week: He was a set down in the second round, saved a match point against Marcos Baghdatis in the quarterfinals, and trailed Muller by a set and 4-4. Muller had three break chances but Cuevas saved them all.

Muller hit 19 aces through the first two sets, but in the tiebreaker, trailing 6-3, he hit a double-fault to concede the second set.

The third set stayed on serve until the fifth game, when Muller was broken for the first time in the match, and smashed his racket in frustration.

Delgado Sets a New Men’s Record at Wimbledon

Forget the strawberries and cream… It looks like Jamie Delgado is the real fixture at the All England Club, at least for the last two decades…

The 37-year-old half-Spanish tennis player set a men’s record by playing at Wimbledon for the 23rd consecutive year on Wednesday.

Jamie Delgado

The British Delgado, predominantly a doubles specialist, and his partner Gilles Muller of Luxembourg won their first-round doubles match 2-6, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-2 over Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan and Divij Sharan of India.

The International Tennis Federation said Delgado played junior Wimbledon tournaments from 1992 to ’95 and played in Wimbledon men’s singles or doubles from 1995 to 2014.

Delgado isn’t playing in the men’s singles draw this year.

Delgado shared the Wimbledon men’s mark of 22 years in a row with Mark Knowles of the Bahamas. Knowles played men’s doubles last year, but he only entered an exhibition doubles event this year.

The longest consecutive Wimbledon streaks are held by two women — Virginia Wade played 26 years in a row and Martina Navratilova 24.

del Potro Advances to the Erste Bank Open Final

Juan Martin del Potro is thisclose to earning his third tournament title of the season…

The 24-year-old Argentine professional tennis player defeated Gilles Muller of Luxembourg at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria, by a final score of 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).

Juan Martin del Potro

Playing in his fourth final of the year, del Potro – the tournament’s No. 1 seed – will now face qualifier Grega Zemlja in the final.

In his 17th career final, del Potro is looking for his 12th career title and his third title of the year after winning in Marseille and Estoril. He’s never played Zemlja before.

del Potro is playing his first tournament since returning from a wrist injury that sidelined him.

“Being in the final means a lot to me after a month without playing,” said del Potro. “I am getting better match by match. I am improving on my game, on my confidence. I am happy to play my second final in a row here.”

Del Potro said he was especially satisfied with his serve. He won all 38 service games this event, and in Wednesday’s second round, del Potro and Daniel Brands of Germany hit 30 and 32 aces respectively to set an all-time record for most aces in a best-of-three match.

His semifinal consisted mainly of short rallies and featured no breaks of serve. Del Potro converted his fourth match point with his 17th ace.

It’s his return that he needs to improve, said del Potro.

“Once again, I did not take my break point chances in this match so I will work on that,” he said. “I miss a lot of break points. Against this kind of player, one break point is like match point or set point.”
