Diane Guerrero has gone Country

Guerrero is attached to star in the drama, which is based on her memoir. Jane the Virgin producer CBS Television Studios is the studio.

Written by Sciarrotta, In the Country We Love centers on a successful corporate attorney who starts taking pro bono cases for undocumented immigrants after her past as the child of deported parents is revealed by a family emergency.

Guerrero’s memoir In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, co-written with best-selling author Michelle Burford, chronicles Guerrero’s harrowing experience as a teenager.

She was 14 when her parents were taken from their Boston home by immigration agents and deported to their native Colombia while she was at school. From then on, Guerrero, who was born in the U.S., had to rely on the kindness of family friends.

Guerrero was named a White House Ambassador for Citizenship and Naturalization in 2015 and is an outspoken advocate for common-sense, comprehensive immigration reform, having worked with Immigrant Legal Resource Center and Mi Familia Vota, a nonpartisan Latino civic engagement organization to promote citizenship and voter registration.

This is the second broadcast drama project in development for next season that touches on the hot-button issue of immigration, along with The CW’s Casa, from Warner Bros Television and Berlanti Prods.

Guerrero is best known for her role as Maritza Ramos on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. She plays Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) best friend Lina on Jane the Virgin.

Rodriguez to Appear Opposite Gina Rodriguez on the CW’s “Jane the Virgin”

Adam Rodriguez is entering virgin territory…

The 40-year-old Puerto Rican/Cuban-American actor has landed a guest-starring role on the CW’s Jane the Virgin.

Adam Rodriguez

Rodriguez, who will appear on several episodes of Empire this season,

will recur on network’s telenovela-based comedy as Jonathan, Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) very critical writing professor who doesn’t believe in coddling students. Complications, naturally, ensue.

“In the writers room, we broke this arc with Adam in mind and we are all so thrilled to have him,” said Jane the Virgin showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman in a statement. “Wahooo!”

But Rodriguez, who recently starred on the big screen in Magic Mike XXL, has been tapped for another project this season…

He’s set to direct episode 12 of Scorpion’s sophomore season.

CBS Television Studios, which produces both series, has a longstanding relationship with the actor. He starred on CSI: Miami for 10 years, during which time he wrote and directed two episodes. He most recently starred in the studio’s summer legal drama Reckless.

Rodriguez’s other credits include Roswell, Ugly Betty and The Night Shift.

Jane the Virgin’s new season premieres Monday, October 12 at 9 pm ET on The CW.

Scorpion airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on CBS.

Camil to Star Opposite Gina Rodriguez in the CW’s “Jane the Virgin” Pilot

Jaime Camil has a date with la virgen

The 40-year-old Mexican actor/singer, who most recently starred in a gender-bending role on the telenovela Por Ella Soy Eva, is making his U.S. pilot debut with a starring role opposite Gina Rodriguez in the CW’s drama project Jane the Virgin.

Jaime Camil

Based on the popular Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen, Jane The Virgin centers on Jane (Rodriguez), a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Camil will play the series regular role of Rubio, who happens to be a world-famous telenovela star with a surprising connection to Jane.

Camil is currently starring on Univision’s new rom-com novela, Qué pobres tan ricos.

He made a successful feature debut in the U.S. as the star of the bilingual Patelion/Lionsgate indie hit rom-com Pulling Strings, which ranked as the third highest-grossing foreign language film of 2013.

Additionally, a recent guest appearance by Camil on Devious Maids delivered strong ratings for the Lifetime series, which also has Latin roots.

Jane the Virgin, from CBS Television Studios, is written by Jennie Snyder Urman and directed by Brad Silberling.

The CW Orders Pilot of “Juana la virgen” English Adaptation

The hit Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen is one step closer to getting an American makeover…

The CW has ordered a pilot episode of Jane the Virgin, an adaptation of the successful Spanish-language telenovela.

Juana la virgen

From CBS Television Studios, Jane the Virgin is written by Jennie Snyder Urman.

It centers on Jane, a hardworking religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Juana la virgen, created by Perla Farias, was a hit in its original run on Venezuelan broadcaster RCTV in 2002, where it drew an average of 39.1% share, topping the competition by a wide margin.

The telenovela, which starred Daniela Alvarado and Ricardo Álamo, also did very well in Brazil, Spain, Colombia and Mexico and has been translated into nine languages.

The CW Looking to Remake the Hit Venezuelan Telenovela “Juana la virgen”

Following the crossover success of ABC’s Ugly Betty and Lifetime’s Devious Maids, the CW is looking to develop its own Spanish telenovela remake.

The network, in one of its first buys of the coming season, has put in development Jane the Virgin, a drama based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen.

Jennie Snyder Urman, the creator of the CW’s short-lived drama series Emily Owens, MD, will write the adaptation for CBS Television Studios.

Jane the Virgin centers on Jane, a hard-working, religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Juana la virgen, created by Perla Farias, was a hit in its original run on Venezuelan broadcaster RCTV in 2002, where it drew an average of 39.1% share, topping the competition by a wide margin.

The telenovela, which starred Daniela Alvarado and Ricardo Álamo, also did very well in Brazil, Spain, Colombia and Mexico and has been translated into 9 languages.

In the U.S., Juana la virgen aired on Univision and is available on Hulu.

Should Jane the Virgin become reality, it would join ABC’s Ugly Betty, which was based on the Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, and the upcoming Sofia Vergara-executive-produced ABC series Killer Women, based on the Argentine crime drama Mujeres asesinas.

This would be Juana‘s second remake, following an Indian version.
