Sony Pushes Release of Jared Leto’s “Morbius” to April 1

Jared Leto won’t be flying into theaters as originally planned…

Jared Leto, Morbius

While the Columbia Pictures title was previously scheduled to open on January 28, it will now hit theaters in IMAX and premium large formats on April 1.

One factor motivating the push, according to Deadline, was Sony’s huge (continuing) success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which established itself as the highest-grossing film of 2021 upon its December 17 debut.

While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil—or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?

Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson also star in the film, based on the Marvel Comics, which Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless adapted from their own screen story.

Morbius would have opened on its previous date opposite IFC Films’ crime drama, Clean, starring Adrien Brody, Glenn Fleshler, Richie Merritt and Chandler DuPontBradley Bell and Pablo Jones-Soler’s Greenwich Entertainment music doc Charli XCX: Alone Together; and Joe Wright’s musical adaptation of Cyrano, starring Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett and Kelvin Harrison Jr., for MGM and United Artists Releasing.

It’s now set to open against Focus Features’ horror drama You Won’t Be Alone, starring Noomi Rapace and Alice Englert; Universal’s Jo Koy comedy Easter Sunday, also starring Jimmy O. Yang, Tia Carrere, Tiffany Haddish and Lou Diamond Phillips; and STX Entertainment’s thriller The Contractor, toplined by Chris Pine.

Adria Arjona In Talks to Star in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man Universe Film “Morbius”

Adria Arjona could be heading to the Spider-verse

The 26-year-old Guatemalan and Puerto Rican actress is in talks to portray Martine, the female lead in Sony Pictures’ feature film Morbius, which stars Jared Leto.

Adria Arjona

Daniel Espinosa is directing the Spider-Man Universe spinoff based on Marvel Comics’ antihero Morbius the Living Vampire.

Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, the renowned biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius first debuted in the 1970s The Amazing Spider-Man#101 issue. He attempts to cure a fatal blood disease by injecting himself with a treatment serum derived from bats, which transforms him into the anti-hero Morbius. He has all the qualities of a vampire, including a taste for human blood.

In the comics, Martine, who is engaged to Morbius, becomes a potential victim to his bloodlust as he grapples with the transformation that has made him a weird laboratory version of the supernatural vampires of lore.

Sony has declined to comment on Arjona’s possible casting.

Arjona, who made television history as the first Latina and bilingual Dorothy in NBC’s short-lived series Emerald City, was most recently seen on the big screen in Universal’s Pacific Rim Uprising and the Melissa McCarthy-starrer Life of the Party.

Her upcoming projects include Netflix’s Michael Bay movie Six Underground opposite Ryan Reynolds and Corey Hawkins and Triple Frontier with Ben Affleck, as well as Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens series at Amazon.

Daniel Espinosa is seeing Red

Sony Pictures has selected the 40-year-old Chilean filmmaker to direct an adaptation of Clinton Romesha’s book Red Platoon: A True Story of American Valor.

Daniel Espinosa

George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures will produce the film. Sony optioned the book last year., with Suicide Squad 2‘s Adam Cozad penning the script.

Medal of Honor winner Romesha was part of Red Platoon and the Black Knight Troop , which in 2009 prepared to shut down Command Outpost Keating. The outpost was the most remote and inaccessible in a string of bases built by the U.S. military in Nuristan and Kunar to keep Taliban insurgents from commuting between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It took three years for military to understand what was instantly clear to the men guarding it: The outpost was too isolated and dangerous to defend. After a series of smaller attacks, the Taliban came with everything it had, on October 3, 2009. While Romesha and his compatriots beat back the assault after 14 hours, they lost eight men in the balance. Romesha spearheaded both the defense of the outpost and the counterattack that drove the Taliban back.

The deal puts Espinosa back in business with Sony Pictures, which released the sci-fi thriller LifeRed Platoon potentially falls right into the filmmaker’s wheelhouse, and could follow in the footsteps of great war films like Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers.

Espinosa’s credits include Safe House, Child 44 and Easy Money.

Espinosa to Direct Film Adaptation of Rolling Stone Article “The Anarchists vs. ISIS”

Daniel Espinosa

Gyllenhall is expected to star.

Harp’s article published last month tells the true story of a ragtag team of American volunteers, socialists and outcasts who are fighting alongside the Kurdish militia known as the YPG to beat ISIS in Syria and establish an anarchist collective amid the rubble of war.

Espinosa will also produce via his newly formed BOZI shingle alongside Gyllenhaal and Marker and Bold Films chairman Michel Litvak. Bold’s CEO Gary Michael Walters will executive produce.

“Jake and I are thrilled to partner with Daniel Espinosa on Seth Harp’s daring story,” Marker said. “Thematically, we’re often attracted to material about the search for identity, especially in a world where it’s become easier to feel less and less connected. Seth’s story is about people who abandon everything that’s familiar as a means to connect in the most brutal of circumstances.”

Added Litvak: “In a very short time under the leadership of Jake and Riva, Ninestories has become an incredibly exciting production company. Their vision for fresh and provocative material coupled with brilliant filmmakers like Daniel Espinosa aligns perfectly with Bold’s mandate.”

Espinosa’s Life opens in theaters this Friday. His other credits include Safe House, Child 44 and Assassin’s Creed.
