Ángel Barajas Becomes First-Ever Olympic Medalist in Gymnastics with High Bar Silver at 2024 Paris Games

2024 Paris GamesÁngel Barajas has earned a place in Colombian Olympic history…

The 17-year-old Colombian gymnast became the first Colombian to win an Olympic medal in the gymnastics discipline after winning a silver in the high bar competition on Monday at the 2024 Paris Games.

Ángel BarajasIt’s also the first medal for Colombia at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Barajas is also the youngest medalist in a men’s individual event since 1988. And he was so, so close to gold too.

Barajas had the same score as the new Olympic champion, Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka, 14.533.

The tiebreaker, however, went to Oka, who had a higher execution score. That means Barajas got silver while Oka was awarded the gold.

The Colombian earned the silver medal with a clean routine and a very good landing on a bumpy high bar event where most of the favorites suffered falls.

Ángel BarajasBarajas, who came in with a very high difficulty level, delivered when it counted the most and got a medal for it.

The Cúcuta native was considered one of the big promises of gymnastics, but very few expected that promise to materialize quite so early.

He won four medals at the 2023 World Junior Championships, including gold on parallel bars and floor, silver in the all-around competition, and bronze on the high bar.

Barajas was also the first Colombian gymnast to be crowned junior world champion, but at just 17 years old (he will turn 18 the very day after the Closing Ceremony), it felt like perhaps the Olympic games had come a little too soon for him.

On August 5th, however, Ángel Barajas saw an opportunity and went out and seized it. And got a medal to show for it.

Rebeca Andrade Edges Past Simone Biles for Women’s Floor Final Gold at 2024 Paris Games

2024 Paris GamesRebeca Andrade has closed out her 2024 Paris Games with an exclamation point…

The 25-year-old Brazilian artistic gymnast edged out American superstar Simone Biles in Monday’s women’s gymnastics floor final to earn the gold medal, becoming Brazil’s most decorated Olympian in any discipline with six career medals.

Rebeca AndradeAndrade, already a gold medalist in the vault at the pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games, won her fourth medal in Paris after all-around and vault silver and team bronze

Going into the competition, Biles was the favorite to come out on top after her seven-tenth lead in qualifications and a difficulty score of 6.9. Andrade was expected to take the silver.

Rebeca AndradeBut Biles, who struggled in warm-ups and was limping due to her calf injury, didn’t execute her routine to perfection, earning a 14.133 from the judges, .033 behind Andrade’s 14.166.

Team USA’s Jordan Chiles took home the bronze with a 13.766, after her coaches appealed her initial score.

Together, Andrade, Biles and Chiles made Olympic history as the first three Black gymnasts to share the top three spots in an Olympics — a feat that also occurred at last year’s world championships, when Biles and Andrade shared the podium with Shilese Jones in the individual all-around.

Rebeca AndradeIn a show of true sportsmanship and respect, Biles and Chiles bowed in honor of the gold medalist following the medal presentation as Andrade raised her arms triumphantly while smiling.

“First, it was an all-Black podium, so that was super exciting for us,” Biles told reporters in a press conference. “But then Jordan was like, ‘Should we bow to her?’ And I was like, ‘absolutely’ — it was just the right thing to do.”

“She’s so amazing. She’s queen,” Biles said. “She’s such an excitement to watch — all the fans in the crowd always cheering for her.”

Carlos Alcaraz Takes Home Silver in Men’s Singles Tennis at 2024 Paris Games

2024 Paris GamesIt’s a silver lining for Carlos Alcaraz

Despite his loss in the men’s singles final to Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles tennis final on Sunday, the 21-year-old Spanish tennis star claimed the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Games.

Carlos Alcaraz, OlympicsAlcaraz, who was gunning to become the youngest men’s tennis Olympic champion in his Olympic debut, lost a close match in straight sets, with both decided by a tiebreaker.

In the end, Alcaraz lost 6-7 (3), 6-7 (2).

Despite his disappointment at his defeat on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the Olympic flame inside the Spaniard remains well and truly alight.

“I always want to win, that’s for sure, but taking the silver medal, I have to be really proud,” said Alcaraz in post-match comments made to NBC. “I’m building a really great career and I hope it’s going to keep going.

“Honestly, I’m pretty proud to be in this position, I’m pretty proud to bring a medal to Spain. I’m pretty sure that my moment will come, and I will bring the gold medal to Spain one day. So I’m going to wait for that moment and I’m going to work for that moment, but right now I have to enjoy lifting the silver medal, it’s pretty amazing as well.”

Alcaraz has good reason to feel confident about the future. Sunday’s loss was a rare low moment in what has otherwise been a largely stellar year for the Spaniard.

He lifted his third and fourth major titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, while he also lifted his fifth ATP Masters 1000 crown in Indian Wells in March.

The No. 3 in the ATP Rankings also knows how close he was to Djokovic in Sunday’s high-level encounter.

Alcaraz forced the Serbian to fend off eight break points en route to victory, and he’ll leave Paris satisfied he gave his all in pursuit of Olympic glory.

‘It is painful to lose the way that I lost this match. I had my opportunities… I couldn’t take them,” said Alcaraz. “Novak is playing great, he really settled in his position, in the difficult moments he increased his level, he played unbelievable. I’m really disappointed but honestly, I’m going to leave the court with my head really high. I gave everything that I had fighting for Spain, it was everything to me so I’m proud the way that I played today.”

The next few months also promise plenty for Alcaraz, who is currently 38-7 for the season and second in the ATP Live Race To Turin. He’s next set to compete at the Cincinnati Open later this month, when he’ll resume his pursuit of rival and current Live Race leader Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz is bidding to finish the season as ATP Year-End No. 1 for the second time.
