Gerardo Naranjo’s stock in Hollywood continues to rise…
The 40-year-old Mexican filmmaker has just inked a deal with Focus Features to direct A Man Must Die.
Naranjo—who helmed Miss Bala, Mexico’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar submission—wrote the script for the project. The film is described as a political thriller comparable to the critically acclaimed Carlos.

Jesús Orellana’s critically acclaimed animated short Rosa is one step closer to becoming a full-length feature…
20th Century Fox has tapped Will Dunn has been hired to write the script for the live-action, sci-fi film version of Rosa, based on the young Spanish filmmaker’s short film.
Orellana is set to direct the project, which is being produced by Simon Kinberg as well as Raymond Brothers and Scott Glassgold of IAM Entertainment.
Rosa, which made a massive splash when it played at several film festivals late last year, is described as “an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival.” Rosa is a bit like Pixar‘s Wall-e, but much darker, as Rosa wanders through the lifeless planet, until she discovers she is not alone.
Orellana, a comic book artist, made the short from his home computer in Barcelona, with the intent of directing a full-length feature.
20th Century Fox and Verizon unleashed a brand new clip called “Quiet Eye,” which focuses on the 32-year-old half-Spanish actress’ character Dr. Elizabeth Shaw. It shows her sending a message to Guy Pearce‘s Peter Weyland of Weyland Industries.
As Shaw is imploring Weyland to help finance her research in uncovering humanity’s origins, the fictional company from the Alien series monitors her call. It can also be seen how the company’s software is analyzing the scientist’s face as she delivers her heartfelt plea.
Prior to the release of Rapace’s viral video, two other viral videos have been put out earlier as part of the movie’s ad campaign. One features the introduction of Michael Fassbender‘s David 8 android, while the other one shows Peter Weyland promoting a world change through his company during a TED Conference in 2023.
Directed by Ridley Scott, Prometheus follows a team of explorers as they discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth that leads them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they find out that they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.
In addition to Rapace, Pearce and Fassbender, this sci-fi thriller stars Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Logan Marshall-Green among the cast ensemble.
Prometheus is slated to open in theaters on June 8.
After nearly 15 years and three series at 20th Century Fox TV, Greg Garcia is moving on to greener pastures.
The 42-year-old Latino director, producer and writer has signed a four-year deal with CBS TV Studios to develop new projects.
As part of the agreement, Garcia will remain as the showrunner on Fox’s Raising Hopefor its upcoming third season while working on development for CBS Studios.
Garcia began his long stint at 20th Century Fox as a writer on the short-lived Getting Personal before co-creating his first series for the studio, Yes, Dear, which ran on CBS for six seasons.
He’d go on to serve as the creator/executive producer of the Emmy Award-winning My Name Is Earl and most recently Fox’s Raising Hope.
“Greg is truly one of the funniest people I know, and certainly one of the elite comedy showrunners,” said CBS TV Studios president David Stapf, who had pursued Garcia for several years. “He is a rare creative talent, who has created successful shows in both the multi- and single-camera form across a variety of networks.”

The heartbreaking love story of Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras and his deceased wife Audrey Mestre may be headed to the big screen.
20th Century Fox has attached J. Michael Straczynski to write and Martin Campbell to direct The Dive, based on the true story of the 50-year-old Cuban professional free diver and his wife, a natural free diver herself, who passed away during a dive in 2002.
Based on the novel by the same name, The Dive tells the story of Ferraras’ relationship with the French-born Mexican-national Mestre, whom he met in 1996 and married in 1999. The two became a regular record-breaking couple in the sport of free diving, dividing men and women’s records between them.On October 12, 2002 Mestre died during an attempt to break the no-limits free diving world record.
The film was originally a James Cameron-directing vehicle. From a submersible, Cameron filmed Ferraras as he conducted a tribute dive in memory of his late wife one year after her death, plunging to the depth that cost her life—171 meters.
He’s gained critical acclaim for helming Mexico’s Best Foreign Language FilmOscar submission, Miss Bala… And, now Gerardo Naranjo could be directing his first big studio film.
The Mexican filmmaker is currently in negotiations with 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment to helm The Mountain Between Us—an adaptation of the Charles Martin novel, a harrowing tale of survival and love.
It centers on Ashley, a writer catching a flight from Salt Lake City for her wedding on the East Coast. Meanwhile, Ben is a doctor returning from a medical conference. When their flight cancelled due to a broken de-icer, the strangers agree to charter a ride, only to see the pilot suffer a heart attack and crash into a desolate snowy mountain region. Fortunately, Ben is an avid climber who works to get her down the mountain. As the injured pair struggle to get down from the mountain in harsh weather conditions, Ashley begins to realize that maybe she was preparing to marry the wrong guy.
Naranjo is coming off the success of Miss Bala, an intense and riveting thriller about an innocent beauty queen who gets caught up in the Mexican drug wars.
