New York Mets Recalling Francisco Alvarez From Triple-A

The 23-year-old Venezuelan professional baseball catcher, a former top prospect, is set to return to the New York Mets a month after being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, according to a report in The Athletic.

Francisco AlvarezThe Mets reportedly intend to recall Alvarez ahead of their matchup against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

New York optioned Alvarez after the team’s game on June 21. At the time of his demotion, he was batting .236 with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs in 35 games.

As a rookie in 2023, Alvarez belted 25 homers and hit .209 across 123 games.

Over the past month, however, Alvarez has shown notable improvements. Since joining Syracuse, he batted .299 with 11 home runs, including a long ball Sunday that was his third homer in three days and seventh in 19 at-bats.

According to the report, Alvarez’s defense and framing — which ranked in MLB‘s bottom 9 percent, according to Baseball Savant — earned rave reviews from coaches and pitchers in Syracuse.

Alvarez was considered the No. 1 prospect in 2022, but wrist and hand injuries hampered him after his rookie season. Since debuting with the Mets in 2022, Alvarez has batted .223 with 40 home runs and 122 RBIs in 263 games.

The Mets stumbled out of the MLB All-Star break, posting back-to-back home losses to the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend.

New York avoided the series sweep Sunday, escaping with a 3-2 victory.

The New York Mets are calling up the 20-year-old Venezuelan professional baseball catcher and MLB top prospect  for this weekend’s pivotal three-game series against the Atlanta Braves, according to multiple reports.

Francisco Alvarez Alvarez was ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect in ESPN‘s midseason list published in August.

Signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2018, Alvarez has had a meteoric rise through the Mets’ minor league system over the past two years. He slashed .260/.374/.511 with 27 home runs this season while splitting time between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Syracuse.

The Mets enter Friday’s game against the Braves clinging to a one-game lead over Atlanta in the National League East.

El Extrabase was first to report that Alvarez is getting called up.

Francisco Alvarez’s future(s) looked bright…

The 20-year-old Venezuelan professional baseball catcher and New York Mets catching prospect headlines the rosters announced on Thursday for the 2022 SiriusXM Futures Game at Dodger Stadium on July 16.

Francisco AlvarezAlvarez, the No. 9 prospect on ESPN’s preseason top 100 list, is hitting .272/.364/.540 with 18 home runs and received a promotion to Triple-A earlier this week after bashing several mammoth home runs for Double-A Binghamton.

Mets fans are calling for his promotion to the majors given that the team’s catchers are hitting just .195 with two home runs. While installing a rookie at catcher on a first-place team in the middle of the season is unlikely, the Mets could also use Alvarez at designated hitter, where J.D. Davis and Dom Smith have delivered subpar production.

With many of the preseason’s top prospects already in the majors — including Julio Rodriguez, Bobby Witt Jr., Adley Rutschman and Riley Greene — Alvarez has ascended to ESPN’s top spot of those still in the minors.

The overall top performer in the minors so far might be Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who is hitting .298/.429/.548 with 13 home runs and 15 steals between Double-A and Triple-A and has made a huge leap from his preseason ranking of No. 96.

Other top prospects to watch in the game, to be played on July 16 at 7 p.m. ET, include Cardinals power-hitting third baseman Jordan Walker; Pirates catcher Henry Davis, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft; and Rangers right-hander Jack Leiter, the No. 2 in last year’s draft.

The game will be divided into American League and National League rosters.
