It’s a rare honor for Idalys Ortiz

In claiming the silver at this Summer Olympics, Ortiz became the fourth women to earn at least four medals in judo, having also won bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games, gold at the 2012 London Games and silver at 2016 Rio Games.

Ryoko Tani owns the record for the most with five.

Sone won the match via ippon in the Golden Score period after Oritz was charged with her third penalty of the encounter at the 8:52 mark of the match.

“Akira Sone is a great athlete,” Ortiz said. “She is very young, she is very talented, and we knew beforehand if she ended up being my opponent she would be very difficult to beat.”

The bronze medals went to France’s Romane Dicko and Iryna Kindzerska, of Azerbaijan, who is the first woman from her country to earn an Olympic medal in judo.

2016 Rio Games

Ortiz and Andeol’s was a hard-fought bout that went into a golden score period, judo’s version of sudden-death overtime.

The judoka battled for an extra three minutes of golden score time before Andeol earned the win by holding Ortiz down. After 10 seconds, the point at which a yuko gets awarded, Andeol had secured her victory, but she was able to pin Ortiz for another 10 seconds, thus attaining an ippon.

With the loss, Ortiz now holds an Olympic medal of every color.

The three-time Olympian earned bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games, gold in 2012 London Games, and now silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Ortiz defeated Mika Sugimoto of Japan in a cagey, drawn-out final with little action, where both fighters struggled to get a grip or catch the other off balance.

The match went into overtime and the judges eventually ruled Ortiz the winner.
