John Leguizamo to Star as a Villain in “Miami Vice ’85”

John Leguizamo is breaking bad

The 66-year-old Colombian actor will star as a villain in Universal and Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Miami Vice ’85.

 Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone and Danny Ramirez co-star.

Miami Vice ’85, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark 1984-90 NBC series.

The movie will be filmed for Imax and is set for release on May 19, 2028.

While unconfirmed, sources say Leguizamo will play a cartel boss in the pic.

The role marks a full circle moment for Leguizamo who appeared in multiple episodes of Miami Vice in the 1980s at the start of his career.

The film is produced by Dylan Clark/Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski. Gilroy’s script is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series he executive produced with Michael Mann; Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay.

Universal and Leguizamo are coming off a strong summer where he not only had his scene-stealing role in Universal’s biggest box office hit ever, The Odyssey, but also reunited with Matt Damon in a key role for the untitled event pic from the Daniels that is currently filming.

Leguizamo also recently shot Universal’s upcoming Exorcist movie starring Scarlett Johansson and can be seen next in Bullet Catch. 

Paramount/Skydance Moves Up Release Date for Monica Barbaro’s “Top Gun: Maverick”

Monica Barbaro has been cleared for takeoff earlier than expected…

Paramount/Skydance’s long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick, starring the 29-year-old part-Mexican American actress, will fly into theaters on Wednesday, June 24 instead of Friday, June 26.

That’s standard for Paramount to take a big summer event tentpole out on a Wednesday, ala their Transformers movies and even Tom Cruise’s Steven Spielberg-directed 2005 hit War of the Worlds. 

Joseph Kosinskidirects the Top Gunsequeloff a script by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie.

Barbaro stars as ‘Phoenix,’the sole female pilot in the action drama film that sees Tom Cruise return to his iconic role as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Miranda Earns First Oscar for “Life of Pi”…

The second time proved to be the charm for Claudio Miranda…

The Chilean cinematographer, who has had a successful awards season, won his first Oscar at Sunday night’s 85th Academy Awards.

Miranda, who was previously nominated for 2009’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, earned the award for Best Cinematography for his work on Ang Lee’s Life of Pi.

During his acceptance speech, Miranda thanked his team and his family for the support and recalled the creative process that earned him the honor.

“This movie was quit a beast to make… Everyone was just totally there and supportive. It was like a challenge,” said Miranda. “When you are a cinematographer and when you have your eyes and go up and up, and reach this thing, you get excited. But it was really great. I’d like to thank everyone that made this thing totally possible. The Academy, I can’t speak, my wife, my daughters, everyone, thank you so much.”

Miranda’s next project: Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion. Starring Tom Cruise, the sci-fi film centers on Commander Jack Harper, one of the last remaining men on Earth; he repairs the drones which patrol the skies and protect the planet from warring aliens.

Oblivion will be released exclusively in IMAX on April 12, 2013, one week ahead of its nationwide release.
