Marcel Ruiz’s “The Body” to Premiere on Netflix in November

Marcel Ruiz is bringing his Body to Netflix this fall.

Netflix has set the release date for The Body, an upcoming eight-episode series starring the 23-year-old Puerto Rican actor, for November 11.

Marcel RuizCreated by Quinn Shephard, the series follows a group of badly-behaved Catholic school girls, who begin having prophetic visions that set off mass hysteria in town after a dance-team initiation goes wrong.

Shephard directs the premiere and serves as showrunner for the gritty drama, starring Kristina Bogic, Sara Boustany, Geena Meszaros, Nnamdi Asomugha, Louisa Krause, Shirley Chen, Jackson Kelly, Sofia Wylie, with Gabby Windey, Kyra Pierce, Phallon Pierce, Orlando Norman, Ashley Madekwe, Motell Foster, Cale Ambrozic, Anna Tierney, Chloe Longname, Sarah Abbott, Emily Roman, Michela Luci, Bella Neuspiel, Julia Lowe and Christine Solomon.

Marcel Ruiz, The BodyShephard calls The Body “a love letter to all the ’90s and Y2K teen movies and erotic thrillers” she loved growing up. This includes movies like Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures, and even Mean Girls. The Crucible and the Salem witch trials also have heavy influence. She also calls in her “most personal” project yet.

“I’ve always been interested in the idea of girlhood as a religious experience. This story is definitely my way of putting a playful spin on all the nightmares of my own teenage-dom,” Shephard says. “Tonally, I would describe the show as gritty camp. It’s a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror.

Executive producers include Peter Chernin, Amy Israel and Josh Stern for North Road, Riley Keough, Gina Gammell and Sacha Ben Harroche for Felix Culpa as well as Blair Breard.

Ruiz is best known for his breakout role as Alex Alvarez in the sitcom One Day at a Time and as John Smith in the feature film Breakthrough.

Iglesias to Star in Gonzalo Bendala’s Upcoming Spanish Thriller “Innocent Killers”

Maxi Iglesias has landed a killer role…

The 23-year-old actor, one of Spain’s rising sex symbols, has joined the cast of Gonzalo Bendala’s upcoming thriller Innocent Killers, alongside Aura Garrido and Luis Fernandez.

The suspense drama, produced by Aralan, is scheduled to shoot at the end of the month, with backing from pubcaster Television Espanola, the film institute ICAA and regional broadcaster Canal Sur.

Bendala’s directorial debut is Aralan’s follow-up to Patricia Ferreira’s The Wild Children, which won best film and best screenplay at 2012’s 15th Malaga Spanish Film Festival.

Iglesias and Fernandez have both become pop idols in their native land where their television characters on Los Protegidos propelled them to fame. More recently they have starred together in Sony‘s thriller XP3D.

Garrido is a rising star in Spain, following her film debut in Oriol Paulo’s The Body. Audiences can see her in theaters in Spain now in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Stockholm.

“A suspenser, echoing elements of Hitchcock,” according to Aralan CEO Marta Velasco, “Killers tells of a university student (Iglesias) who receives an job offer to kill his psychology teacher (Miguel Sola).The twist is that the offer comes from the psychology teacher.”

Producers said the story is inspired by a series of strange and unsuccessful attempts on the life of New York’s Michael Malloy, an ex-firefighter and legendary alcoholic in the 1920 in New York.

Fernández to Star in the Spanish-Language Thriller “Vulcania”

Spain’s rising star Miquel Fernández is about to thrill audiences in his next leading role…

The 34-year-old Spanish actor has been cast in the Spanish-language thriller Vulcania.

Fernandez will star opposite fellow Spanish talent Aura Garrido in the film, which is being produced by Zentropa.

Based on an original screenplay from Diego Soto, the film will be the directorial debut of Jose Skaf.

Zentropa Spain, Zentropa Sweden and France’s Film 1Vast will work together on the production.

The thriller-drama is set in an industrial dystopia from which nobody escapes, according to the film’s lead producer David Matamoros.

Vulcania is scheduled to start shooting in May in Spain and has attached two of the fastest-rising young Spanish actors to star.

Fernandez was previously featured in Family United and The End, while Garrido was in The Body and Stockholm.

The film project was part of the Paris-based showcase “Small is Biutiful”, backed by the Cannes Market. In Spain, the film has the support of public broadcasters TVE and TV3, the Spanish Film Institute, the Catalan Film Institute and Ibermedia, among others.
