David Del Rio to Star Opposite Kathy Bates in CBS’ Drama Pilot “Matlock”

The 35-year-old Latinx actor/director and former Baker and the Beauty star and Leah Lewis have been cast as series regulars opposite Kathy Bates and Skye P. Marshall in CBS’ drama pilot Matlock.

David Del RioThe project is a new take on the classic legal television drama starring Andy Griffith, which hails from Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman and NCIS: Los Angeles star Eric Christian Olsen.

In Matlock, written by Urman and to be directed by Kat Coiro, after achieving success in her younger years, the brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock (Bates) rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within.

Del Rio plays Billy, a charismatic young associate a few years out of law school and assigned to work on one of the firm’s biggest cases.  He helps Matty navigate her new work environment as he seemingly knows more than he should.

Lewis plays Sarah, a Junior Associate eager to get ahead and not worried about being liked. Sarah is all ambition, determined to be seen for her smarts and willing to do anything to move up a peg at the firm. She is not pleased when she’s forced to work alongside Matty, lowering her position at the company even further.

Bates executive produces alongside Sutton Street’s Urman and Joanna Klein, Coiro, as well as Cloud Nine’s Olsen and John Will.

Del Rio can be seen as a lead in the Hulu Original series, Maggie, opposite Rebecca Rittenhouse. His most recent credits include starring as Mateo in ABC’s Baker and the Beauty. He also replaced Lin-Manuel Miranda in his Tony winning role on Broadway as Sonny in In the Heights, and teamed up with Miranda to star in the Emmy nominated Grease: Live on Fox.

Josh Segarra to Star Opposite Tatiana Maslany in Marvel’s “She-Hulk”

Josh Segarra is hulkin’ up his resume…

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican actor has been cast in Marvel’s She-Hulk series starring Tatiana Maslany in the title role.

He joins a cast that includes Renée Elise Goldsberry, Ginger Gonzaga and Mark Ruffalo, who will be reprising his role as Bruce Banner aka the Hulk.

Marvel had no comment on the casting.

She-Hulk is a legal comedy that centers on the eponymous heroine (Maslany), aka Jennifer Walters, an attorney who has similar powers to her cousin, Banner/The Hulk. The She-Hulk series is directed by Kat Coiro and Anu Valia, with Jessica Gao serving as head writer.

It’s unknown who Segarra will be playing.

Segarra, an Arrow alum, can be seen next in the second season of The Other Two on HBO Max, which premieres on August 26. His other recent credits include playing RuPaul’s boyfriend in the hit Netflix series, AJ and the Queen and Pastor Christian in the Emmy-nominated Dolly Parton movie, Christmas in the Square.

The Launch of Jennifer Lopez’s “Marry Me,” Co-Starring Maluma, Moves to May 2021

Jennifer Lopez’s wedding bells will have to wait a little longer…

Universal Pictures’ music fueled romantic comedy Marry Me, starring the 51-year-old Puerto Rican actress/singer and Maluma, is moving from Presidents DayValentine’s Day weekend on the theatrical release calendar next year, February 12 and moving to May 14, 2021.

Marry Me will take the place of DreamWorks Animation’s untitled Spirit Riding Free movie, which has now been titled Spirit UntamedThat animated pic will now open on June 4, 2021.

This is one of Lopez and Wilson’s highest tested features, and Universal wants to make an event out of this, at an opportune time on the calendar.

Marry Me leaves behind a weekend that has Disney/20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man prequel and Paramount’s untitled Lee Daniels Billie Holiday movie on Feb. 12, and goes to a frame where it’s facing off against Paramount’s Animation feature Rumble. Spirit Untamed joins a weekend, though it looks busy, is apt to loosen up with Paramount’s Micronautdated there, Sony Animation’s VivoNew Line’s Conjuring 3 and MGM’s Samaritan

The feature hasoriginal songs from Lopez and Maluma. Lopez stars as musical superstar Kat Valdez and Owen Wilson as Charlie Gilbert, a math teacher—total strangers who agree to marry and then get to know each other. An unlikely romance about two different people searching for something real in a world where value is based on likes and followers, the pic explores celebrity, marriage and social media.

ABC Buys “Splitting the Difference” from Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment

Splitting The Difference, a comedy created by filmmaker Kat Coiro, has sold to ABC with penalty.

It hails from the 39-year-old Mexican American actress’ UnbeliEVAble Entertainment and Universal Television, where the company is under a first-look deal.

The project is based on Tré Miller-Rodriguez’s memoir Splitting the Difference, which chronicles her life in New York as a 34-year-old widow who reunites with the daughter she gave up for adoption at 18.

The ABC show, written by Coiro, centers on a buttoned-down 17-year-old who reunites with her recently widowed 36-year-old biological mom and they become the heart of a patchwork family bound by more than blood.

Coiro and UnbeliEVAble’s Longoria and Ben Spector will executive produce.

This is the fifth sale for UnbeliEVAble this development season.
