Netflix Releases New Teaser for Anime Series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Featuring Aubrey Plaza

Netflix is preparing for the release of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, featuring the 39-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress.

The teaser gives a look at the budding love story between Scott and Ramona.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off follows as Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and discovers he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. But this time, things get even more complicated as Scott takes Ramona Flowers, her evil exes and his friends off on a mysterious new action-packed journey to find love.

Andréa Burns to Star in the Hulu Comedy Series “Up Here”

The 51-year-old half-Venezuelan actress and singer has been cast in the Hulu comedy Up Here, starring Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes.

It follows an ordinary couple (Whitman as Lindsay and Valdes as Miguel) as they fall in love while discovering the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves.

Original songs for the series are from Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Burns, best known for her portrayal of the hairdresser Daniela in Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights, will portray Rosie, Miguel’s mother.

Other series regulars include Katie Finneran, John Hodgman, Sophia Hammons and newcomer Emilia Suárez as Renee, the queen bee of Miguel’s high school.

Recurring characters are Ned (George Hampe), Fiona (Julia McDermott), Orson (Scott Porter, Marta (Ayumi Patterson), and Ted aka Mr. McGooch (Brian Stokes Mitchell).

Production on the show, which has an eight-episode straight-to-series order, begins this summer in New York. Writers/executive producers are Steven Levenson (showrunner), Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez.

Carlos Valdes to Star in Hulu’s Musical Romantic Comedy Series “Up Here”

The 33-year-old Colombian-American actor and singer will star in Hulu’s musical romantic comedy series Up Here alongside Mae Whitman.

Miguel has always struggled with the feeling that he doesn’t quite belong. But after a cataclysmic breakup, Miguel has decided to reinvent himself, burying his feelings and ditching a promising career as a video game concept artist for the lucrative world of investment banking, determined never to get hurt again.

Written by Steven Levenson, Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and directed by Thomas Kail, Up Here is set in New York City in the waning days of 1999. It follows the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, Lindsay (Whitman) and Miguel, as they fall in love and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.

Anderson-Lopez and Lopez will pen original songs for the series.

Production on the show, which has an eight-episode straight-to-series order, is set to begin this summer in New York. 20th Television is the studio, producing with Kail’s Old 320 Sycamore Productions.

Valdes most recently appeared in the Starz Watergate drama Gaslit as FBI agent Paul Magallanes. Before that, he had a seven-season run as Cisco Ramon on The Flash and numerous other Arrowverse shows including Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl.

He made his Broadway debut in 2013 in the Tony Award-winning musical Once.

Demi Lovato to Take Part in “Honor Her Wish” Virtual Rally to Honor the Late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The 28-year-old half-Mexican American singer/actress will take part in a special rally to pay tribute to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg‘s legacy.

Lovato joins an all-star roster that includes Miley Cyrus, Jessica Biel, Kristen Bell, Beanie Feldstein, Elizabeth Banks, Yvette Nicole Brown and Mae Whitman, who’ll all take part in the “Honor Her Wish” virtual event.

The program, set for Monday, October 12 at 8:00 pm ET, will demand the U.S. Senate honor RBG‘s dying wish that her seat be filled after the inauguration next January. The event will will coincide with the first day of Republican hearings to confirm Donald Trump’s nominee for a Supreme Court replacement.

The new group of celebrities join previously announced participants Hayley Williams, Phoebe Bridgers, Kesha, Michael Stipe, Margo Price, John Batiste and Kathleen Hanna.

Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Stacey Abrams, Elizabeth Warren and more leaders will also speak out at the event.

“Honor Her Wish” is open to the public.

NBC Renews Manny Montana’s “Good Girls” for Fourth Season

NBC has ordered a fourth season of Good Girls, featuring the 36-year-old Mexican actor in the supporting cast.

Hailing from creator Jenna BansGood Girls, whose third season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic and resulting production shutdown, has done well ratings-wise. 

The series averaged a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers overall in L+7 Nielsens, with the show’s February 16 season premiere growing to a 3.3 rating in 18-49 and 7.8 million viewers with digital and linear viewing recorded to date. Digital 18-49 viewership also grew this season versus last by 50%, making it NBC’s #2 show this season on digital platforms.

Written and executive produced by Bans, Good Girlsstars Christina Hendricks, Retta and Mae Whitman as three suburban moms who get tired of trying to make ends meet and decide it’s time to stick up for themselves by robbing the local grocery store. But when the manager catches a glimpse of one of them and the loot is far more than they expected, it doesn’t take long for the three best friends to realize the perfect getaway will be harder than they think.

In addition to Montana, who portrays Rio, the cast also includes Reno WilsonLidya JewettIsaiah Stannard and Matthew Lillard.

Montana previously starred on television in Rosewood, Graceland and Conviction.

Thorne Shares Teaser Trailer for Her New Film “The DUFF”

The 17-year-old half-Cuban American actress/singer and former Disney Channel star has released a teaser trailer for her latest film The DUFF.

Thorne released the clip on her Instagram account, offering a sneak peek at the overconfident crowd and the insecure outcasts crossing paths in a high school.

“I am beyond thrilled to show you the teaser trailer for #TheDUFF,” gushes the actress who plays the popular girl. “This was such an incredible experience with the most talented people in the business. Book and script are so engaging and funny.”

Adapted from Kody Keplinger‘s novel of the same name, it follows Bianca (Mae Whitman) who is known as “Designated Ugly Fat Friend” to her prettier, more popular friends. She enlists Wesley (Robbie Amell), a slick but charming jock, to help her reinvent herself and and overthrow the school’s ruthless label maker Madison (Thorne).

The film will open in North American theaters starting April 10, 2015.

Santos to Star Opposite Bella Thorne in CBS Films’ Teen Comedy “The DUFF”

The Cuban- and Brazilian-American actress has joined the cast of CBS Films’ upcoming teen comedy The DUFF, which will also star Bella Thorne.

Directed by Ari Sandel, the film is an adaptation of the Kody Keplinger’s young adult novel The DUFF: (Designated Ugly Fat Friend).

Mae Whitman stars in the comedy about contented high schooler named Bianca, whose world is shattered when she discovers the student body knows her as ‘The Duff’ (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). She reinvents herself, setting out to overthrow the school’s reigning queen bee.

Santos,who starred on the first season ofABC Family’s The Fosters, will portray one of Bianca’s more popular friends.

Thorne will star as Bianca’s ruthless rival Madison.

Ken Jeong is set to play her favorite teacher, with Nick Eversman playing Bianca’s crush and Robbie Amell as a slick and charming jock she enlists for her grand scheme.

 

Josh Cagan adapted the script from Keplinger’s novel.

Thorne Starring in the Teen Comedy “The DUFF”

The16-year-old half-Cuban American actress has joined the cast of The DUFF, a teen comedy from CBS Films.

Directed by Ari Sandel, the film is an adaptation of the Kody Keplinger’syoung adult novel The DUFF: (Designated Ugly Fat Friend).

The DUFF centers on Bianca (portrayed by Mae Whitman), an off-beat honor roll student who discovers she is considered the DUFF — designated ugly fat friend. She then enlists the help of her neighbor, a jock, to become less socially awkward so she can ask her longtime crush on a date.

No word on Thorne’s role in the movie, which is set to shoot in Atlanta in late May.
