Gemma Garcia Named Executive Vice President of News at Telemundo

Gemma Garcia is making news of her own…

The Latina television executive is returning to Telemundo to lead the Noticias Telemundo news division.

Gemma GarciaShe will succeed Patsy Loris, who departed in January as executive vice president of news.

Garcia will oversee news programming, editorial units, digital news properties, newsgathering and bureaus in the United States and Latin America.

Garcia will report to Luis Fernandez, chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises.

Garcia most recently was the head of news at RTVE Play, an OTT service of Spain’s public media company Radio Television Espanola. She previously had several different news leadership positions at Telemundo, including as senior vice president of digital news. She also helped develop and launch initiatives like Planeta Tierra, an environmental reporting unit, and the Axios Latino newsletter.

In a statement, Garcia said that “as we approach historic presidential elections in both the United States and Mexico, I look forward to working with the best team of news professionals in Spanish language television to continue to give Latinos a voice and provide them with all the news and resources they need to make well-informed decisions.”

Fernandez said Garcia “brings impeccable news judgment, invaluable experience as an innovative news leader and an unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality journalism to the Latino community.”

Variety to Honor Raúl Alarcón with Legends and Groundbreakers Award at Miami Entertainment Town Lunch

The Latino music executive who serves as CEO and chairman of the Spanish Broadcasting System, one of the largest Spanish-language media companies in the U.S., will be honored at Variety’s second annual Miami Entertainment Town lunch, to be held on Thursday, April 13, in the Florida city.

Raúl AlarcónAlarcón willreceive the Legends and Groundbreakers Award for his role in promoting Latin music radio stations across the nation.

A legend in Miami, Alarcón has been on the forefront of promoting Latin artists, via radio play, and has been a crucial advocate for many of the biggest stars in Latin music. 

The event, in partnership with CN Bank, celebrates the growing entertainment and media industry based out of Miami and recognizes those profiled in Variety’s Miami Entertainment Impact Report.

At the celebration, Ronald Day, President of Entertainment and Content Strategy for NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, and Karen Barroeta, Executive Vice President of Production and Development Telemundo Global Studios, will participate in a keynote conversation with Rodrigo Nieto-Galvis, Entertainment Banking Team Leader at CN Bank Miami. The conversation will be centered around Telemundo’s strategy and around music and original programming based out of Miami.

This year, Variety will be adding a new award to the program with mega-music producer Timbaland.

He will receive the Pioneer Award for his work creating Beat Club and producing music with top artists in Miami.

Loud and Live’s CEO Nelson Albareda will participate in a spotlight conversation with Miami Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, about the city’s expansion into the entertainment sector.

Variety’s Chief Operating Officer, Dea Lawrence, and City National Bank’s Head of Entertainment Banking, JaHan Wang, will give opening remarks with Miami Beach Mayor, Dan Gelber.

J Balvin to Host Mental Health-Themed Series “Gente Sana”

J Balvin is preparing to tackle mental health issues…

The 36-year-old Colombian singer and rapper is set to host the new series Gente Sana, produced by Exile Content Studio.

J BalvinThe program will stream on TPlus, a new streaming platform by NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. Gente Sana will also stream on Peacock toward the end of the year.

The six-episodes series will explore techniques used by celebrities to cope with mental health issues. Each episode will feature a new guest that will, “have a candid and intimate conversation with Balvin about their coping mechanisms and personal rituals that give them confidence,” according to an official press release.

“I’ve always been honest about my own struggle with mental health issues and that’s why I’m honored that Exile and NBC have offered me a platform to continue to have these honest conversations with people going through a similar situation,” Balvin said in a statement. “Mental health is very important for me and it’s something many of us struggle with. I hope to create content that will help people who are struggling and for them to know they’re not alone and that there are many healthy ways to approach this topic.”
