Leguizamo’s Semi-Autobiographical Sitcom Gets ABC Pilot Order

John Leguizamo is one step closer to returning to television…

The 48-year-old Colombian-American actor/comedian has just received his third comedy pilot order from in the last 12 months.

John Leguizamo

The still-untitled multi-camera comedy is based on Leguizamo’s life as a husband, father and fish out of water on the upper West Side of New York as reflected in his one-man shows. Woven into this world are his privileged wife, his friends from his life back in the Bronx, his mother and grandfather who try to keep him grounded in his Latin roots, and his own kids who he worries are getting a little too spoiled and are losing touch with reality.

Leguizamo co-wrote the script for the pilot with former Family Guy executive producer/co-showrunner Chris Sheridan.

The project has been in the works since early February of last year, when Leguizamo signed a development deal with ABC and ABC Studios to develop a comedy inspired by his life for him to star in and executive produce.

But only a week later, Leguizamo was cast in the ABC/ABC Studios pilot The Kings of Van Nuys (then called Only Fools and Horses). After passing on the Kings of Van Nuys pilot in May, ABC brass ordered a new, reworked version of the adaptation of the UK series Only For Fools and Horses. The network then passed on the second pilot in early December, clearing the way for Leguizamo’s original project.

Leguizamo’s “Kings of Van Nuys” Gets a Second Chance at ABC

John Leguizamo is getting a second chance at a network television series…

ABC has given a formal green light to a new pilot for Kings of Van Nuys, starring the 48-year-old Colombian American actor.

John Leguizamo

The network first ordered a pilot for the multi-camera project, which is based on the British series Only Fools And Horses, last season. It missed the cut but ABC chief Paul Lee, a huge fan of the original, liked it enough to request a retooling of the pilot. Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley, who penned the original pilot, wrote a new version. And as part of ABC’s ongoing commitment to the multi-camera comedy genre, Lee announced that Kings of Van Nuys would be re-piloted.

The network is now moving forward with plans to shoot a new pilot after securing virtually the entire team from the original, including the entire cast and director Ted Wass.

The ABC Studios-produced Kings of Van Nuys chronicles the misadventures of two streetwise brothers, Del (Leguizamo) and Rodney (Dustin Ybarra), and their aging grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires.

Leguizamo will appear in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor and the Jeff Wadlow-scripted Kick-Ass 2, despite a deal to star in the ABC comedy pilot Only Fools and Horses.

In The Counselor, he’ll play a low level drug dealer in the Cormac McCarthy-scripted film that stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.

Meanwhile, in the Kick-Ass sequel, he’ll play Javier, a bodyguard assigned to protect aspiring evil guy Red Mist, the role to be reprised by Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Nicolas Cage will also be back to star in Kick-Ass 2.

Ybarra Cast in ABC’s “Only Fools And Horses” Pilot

Following his scene-stealing role in Matt Damon’s We Bought A Zoo, Dustin Ybarra could soon be heading to television opposite another Hollywood icon.

The Latino stand-up comedian/actor has landed the lead opposite John Leguizamo in ABC’s comedy pilot Only Fools And Horses.

Dustin Ybarra

Based on the British series of the same name, the multi-camera comedy chronicles the misadventures of two streetwise brothers, Del (Leguizamo) and Rodney (Ybarra), and their aging grandfather as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires.

Ybarra has previously starred in Comedy Central’s Live at the Gotham.

Leguizamo to Star in ABC’s “Only Fools And Horses” Pilot

He only signed his development deal with ABC less than two weeks ago… But John Leguizamo is already getting to work on a comedy pilot for the network.

The 47-year-old Colombian actor/comedian has signed on to star in the ABC/ABC Studios multi-camera comedy pilot Only Fools And Horses.

John Leguizamo

Based on a British sitcom of the same name, the multi-camera comedy chronicles the misadventures of two streetwise brothers—Del (Leguizamo) and Rodney—and their aging grandfather as they drum up some seriously outrageous and morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their attempt to become millionaires.

Del, the older of the two brothers, is considered the leader of the group. He’s an overly confident con artist who trades crap out of the trunk of his car, cheerfully oblivious to his so-called “low-life scammer” status.

As part of the Emmy-winning comedian’s deal with ABC, if Only Fools And Horses does not get picked up as a series, the Alphabet Network will develop a single-camera comedy inspired by Leguizamo’s professional, personal and family life in New York City for him to star in and executive produce.

Leguizamo is currently touring with his fifth one-man show, Ghetto Klown.
