Brian Flores Hired as New Defensive Coordinator for Minnesota Vikings

Brian Flores is headed to the Midwest.

The 41-year-old Honduran American football coach has been hired as the new defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, ending a monthlong search to replace the fired Ed Donatell.

Brian Flores, Flores spent last season as the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach after being fired as head coach by the Miami Dolphins following the 2021 season.

He’ll take over a defense that finished No. 31 in the NFL in yards allowed and is on the cusp of a significant personnel overhaul. He has a yearslong relationship with Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, who was drafted by the New England Patriots as a quarterback in 2008 when Flores was a special teams assistant there.

After firing Donatell on January 19, the Vikings quickly interviewed four candidates for the job: Ryan Nielsen, Sean Desai, Mike Pettine and Flores. Nielsen took the Atlanta Falcons‘ defensive coordinator job and Desai removed his name from consideration, but sources told ESPN all along that then-Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero was their top candidate.

Evero and O’Connell spent two years on the Los Angeles Rams‘ coaching staff in 2020 and 2021, and O’Connell hoped to reunite in 2023. But Sunday, one day after the Broncos released Evero from his contract, he agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers to be their defensive coordinator without taking an interview with the Vikings.

On Monday, the Vikings moved on to Flores, who also was a finalist for the Arizona Cardinals‘ open head-coaching job.

Flores joins the Vikings one year after suing the NFL and three teams — the Dolphins, Denver Broncos and New York Giants — alleging discrimination regarding his interview processes with Denver and New York and his firing by Miami.

Longtime NFL assistants Steve Wilks and Ray Horton later joined the suit, which the NFL is attempting to move to arbitration. Flores also alleged the Dolphins tried to incentivize him to lose games and participate in illegal tampering; the league disciplined the Dolphins last summer for tampering violations of “unprecedented scope and severity,” according to commissioner Roger Goodell.

It was not immediately clear how Flores’ arrival would affect the scheme that O’Connell originally hired Donatell to install. Flores’ defense in Miami was known for heavy blitzing — it had the NFL’s fourth-highest blitz rate from 2019 to 2021 — and man-to-man coverage in the secondary, two characteristics the Vikings largely stayed away from under Donatell.

Vasquez: A First Time NFL Pro Bowl Selection

It’s an extra special National Football League first for Louis Vasquez

For the first time since joining the NFL four years ago, the 26-year-old Mexican American offensive guard has been selected for the 2014 Pro Bowl.

Louis Vasquez

Vasquez, currently playing for the Denver Broncos, was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the third round of the NFL Draft in 2009. He joined the Broncos in March 2013 as part of a four-year deal.

The NFL combined votes from coaches, players and fans to determine 85 of 87 Pro Bowl selects; the other two players are long-snappers selected by Pro Bowl coaches.

While there were 86 Pro Bowl spots to be voted on, there are 85 players because Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver/kick returner Antonio Brown filled two spots in the voting, which ended Thursday.

Under a new format this year, NFL legends Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will divvy up the players in a two-day draft before the Jan. 26 game. Offensive and defensive players with the most votes who don’t make it past the divisional playoff round will serve as active player captains.

The schoolyard-style selections mean it’s likely teammates will be forced to play on opposite sides. Players on the winning team will earn $53,000 while the losers will get $26,000 under the collective bargaining agreement.

The 2014 Pro Bowl will be played on January 26 at 7:00 pm ET in Honolulu.

Dallas Quarterback Romo Exceeds Career Passing Milestone

It’s turning out to be Lucky No. 7 for Dallas Cowboys star Tony Romo

Along with leading America’s Team to an overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, the 32-year-old Mexican-American quarterback broke the 25,000 yards passing milestone during the game. And he achieved that feat by doing something to a Pittsburgh defense that hadn’t been done in 21 games — throw for 300 yards.

Tony Romo

The Steelers hadn’t allowed more than 200 yards passing in their previous eight games before Sunday.

Romo completed 30-of-42 passes for 341 yards with touchdown passes to Jason Witten and Dez Bryant to continue his hot December days. In three wins this month, Romo has six touchdown passes and one interception with 912 yards passing.

In his last seven games, Romo has 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions.

“I think as the season progresses you understand what your team needs, what we’re good at, what we’re struggling at,” Romo said. “I said it earlier in the year, we made some mistakes that cost us (and those are) things we haven’t made lately.”

It’s the latest feat for Romo, a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Earlier this season, the first-time father passed Troy Aikman‘s career mark to become the franchise’s new career touchdown passes leader.

During Sunday’s game, Cowboys cornerbackBrandon Carr helped seal the victory for the Cowboys when he intercepted a pass from Ben Roethlisberger and returned it 36 yards to the 1 yard line in overtime.

Dan Bailey‘s 21-yard field goal gave the Cowboys the 27-24 winover Pittsburgh in front of thousands of Steelers fans at Cowboys Stadium.

The winning kick came after Romo took a knee to put Bailey in better position.

The Cowboys (8-6) moved into a three-way tie for the NFC East lead with the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. The Cowboys have won three straight and five of their six games.
